Sorry for the correction. The tsunami happened in 2011.
I think that Suzume's interaction with side characters was to show that there are so many interesting and good people to meet and the experiences are something to look forward to, rather than being weighed down by the past.
i really like this idea!!
@@inakyu There are several other minor details like this in the film, which really makes me feel that Suzume is really well written. It's totally about Suzume and through her Shinkai really conveyed his thoughts beautifully.
I loved the message Makoto Shinkai tries to tell us in Suzume. This film explores the idea of facing fading memories, including the devastating earthquake that hit Japan's Tohoku region in 2011. In the film, gates are found in forgotten places or where people's consciousness is fading away. Just as people shouldn't just abandon what they made from nature the gods gave them in the past and pretend to have forgotten them, Suzume learns the importance of facing her problems and traumas and moving forward throughout the story. In my opinion, Suzume has a stronger message toward both society and individuals, while Your Name and Weathering with You focus rather on individuals only.
I’d LOVE to see a video on Your Name and Weathering! I’m a fan of both and I’d love to hear your thoughts on how Shinkai writes romance in all three!
Great review. I don't feel like I can get into my issues with the film without going into spoilers, so I will note that Makoto Shinkai IS becoming a far better director as he continues into his career. He isn't afraid to try new things and hone his craft, which I appreciate.
Re: cupcake, when are you gonna start your beatboxing career?
LOL Yes!! Definitely showing he's more than his love stories
0:08 just want to talk about the level of color grading that went into your camera quality is peak levels, I 100% know you went to film school or at least dived in it at one point.
0:48 also realized how soft your zooms are they goated.
I personally think the film itself with no spoilers is a great time. keep up the fire work.
i appreciate you, thank you
for people like me who had gone through strong earthquakes, this movie hits hard. What a masterpiece! congratulations Shinkai!!!
I went to watch Suzume totally blind and it was so worth it. I love how shinkai creates amazing and unique stories with breath-taking art. Emotions and expressions by every character felt so real and human and not forced, it felt so natural. It's one of my favs fs.
Probably the only thing I want to complain about is that Makoto wanted souta to be a female character and write a bit different aspect of romance with both of them being girls but his producer rejected that part. I understand the theme of this movie isn't romance but it would have been nice. Anyways it still is amazing. One thing I noticed is that Makoto loves making our main characters fall from the sky, be it Suzume, Mitsuha or Hina lol.
I am super interested in hearing ur thoughts about Your name, Weathering with you and Suzume's themes. Also the Ghibli themes Shinkai integrates in his movies.
It's not unique is repetitive
It was such a beautiful movie. Lots of beautiful, loveable characters, and I just felt like I was along for a wonderful ride the entire time
I definitely had a lot of questions about the cats as well.
I’m in love with a chair is all I will say
based
As a longtime fan of Makoto Shinkai’s work, Suzume made a name in its own right on an emotional level as he did with Your Name and Weathering with You. It’s entirely different compared to those past films in terms of story and isn’t focused heavily on any romantic themes. I personally enjoyed it that I watched it twice in both its Japanese original and the English dub. Wonderfully done by its voice cast on both sides.
hopefully you got your refund both times
@@nathancorrea3718 Nope. Worth every penny and I don’t regret anything out of it. Clearly, you hated it, so that’s your opinion. Good day.
I went and saw it with my stepmom who moved here from Japan, and she was hit so hard at the earthquake references, and just the memories of reality. I think I'm too young, and just uninformed, so while emotionally I felt there was "something bigger" going on, it was an acknowledgement of trauma, down to the day written in her notebook.
Just my two cents after going in blind, and then having a longer conversation afterwards.
Great video! I appreciate the crisp audio, professional yet easy to understand explanation, and the great setup/colors. Great job ❤ I’ll be watching from now on!
I’m definitely glad Suzume didn’t really delve into the couple romance thing because she is 16 or 17 and I’m pretty sure Sota is over 20. The film doesn’t specify his age other than saying he is a college student but his friend said Sota spent 4 years studying for a teachers exam. If he started studying as soon as he graduated high school that means he is 22 but if he took a break he could be older.
I wasn’t all into the romance. It felt lacking because they didn’t delve into the couple romance. It’s weird because she is around 16 and he is at least 22. But then again the legal age of consent in Japan is 16 so this age gap makes sense but is odd to 18+ years old countries
Your culture is not the only culture in the world.
Initially it was going to be a girl girl love but Mikoto Shinkai change it afterwards 😢
Age of consent in Japan “one of the most advanced countries in the world” is 13
@@billyobfas6962 so, they can get married at 13 without parents’ consent?
this was such a great review! i'm so excited for the movie now!!!
It's been postulated that Daijin was a young girl who was sacrificed by her parent who was a door closer. Daijin likely resonated with Suzume, who lost her parent as a young girl. Much like Suzume who could not become Kaede's child, Daijin could not become Suzume's child. Sa-daijin is likely Daijin's father, the door closer who sacrificed himself. The fight between Suzume and Kaede is likely an echo of the familial fighting Daijin and Sa-daijin had for many years.
I absolutely welcome any and every video you could possibly make about this movie. My biggest unsolved mystery is why is the chair only has 3 legs. But I need the answers to your questions too. Overall, I really enjoyed the movie. It is gorgeous and emotional, which is what I expected coming in and I wasn't disappointed. There are also some pretty funny moments. I love when we have a cat being chased by a chair being chased by a girl. It's such a funny image. Also, Serizawa is so funny all the time. I would let him DJ my road trip.
Cupcake.
it has three legs because it was damaged in the tsunami/earthquake
Suzume also said it herself in the movie “now that I think of it I never really took care of it”. Paraphrased.
I would LOVE a video analyzing the Shinkai movies like you mentioned 😍
This movie really touched me and everyone I know who saw it. Helped a lot of us process grief we'd been holding onto, big and small. I'd love to see more Suzume videos!!!
Shinkai knows how to make a compelling and beautiful film! I originally viewed it as a romance first - because that’s Shinkai’s MO -which gave me conflicting ideas about it. But your perspective made me consider some things. Appreciate the video!
That moment when she comforts her younger self...i went back to the theatre twice for that and it's still therapeutic just thinking about it❤
I just found your channel. I really like it. You give great breakdowns and analysis. I subscribed and look forward to checking out some of your recommendations. You have a fun personality. And respectfully, you're very easy on the eyes. Hopefully, your channel will blow up soon!
i would love to watch videos of your other analyses!
OMG your outfit looks beautiful ✨ , anyways the movie is just out of this world
I definitely agree with you. Suzume really took me away and I cry a lot on this movie. It was very power and realistic. Yes definitely do more video about suzume please.
I enjoyed this style of video for you. Do more anime reviews!
the music was so good in this film and i especially like that suzume has the same birthday as me
im excited to watch it
very much interested in all the topics suggested!! please please!
Yeee, let’s do analysis on Shinkai’s last movies!
I'm glad I watched this film cold. It deserves to be experienced without expectation or knowledge of plot points. It had been long enough since I'd seen the trailer that I'd forgotten most details from it. The only thing I really had was the knowledge that Makoto Shinkai loves to explore the topic of relationship (often romantic) separation. I hadn't watched one of his films since _5 Centimeters per Second,_ and seeing _Suzume_ inspired me to spend a lot of money to rectify that.
Love your videos, NEED your plushiessss in muh lifeee T.T
Lol outro is great
I havent watched any of makoto shinkais other movies, i just know people have said your name is good lmao. but when i went to see this movie it was beautiful. I got into the theater late bc of a birthday party ahead of me in line and missed the first five-ten minutes, and still really enjoyed it. I cried, and i do that with a lot of anime but STILL. it was amazing, and did something different with this kind of plot imo. Its also visually stunning, the animation is amazing. Definitely one of my favorite movies ever :) absolutely based takes!
I just lost my mother a few days before watching this movie. Didn't really know what to expect.
It hit me so hard but in a positive way.
I was tearing up like a baby in the cinema, Ill never forget the experience and the emotions.
Beautiful.
Hey, great review, big fan I always get sucked in to your content. Off topic, but are you gonna continue Chainsaw Man and pick up volume 12??
Great video! I watched Suzume recently and I loved it. I'm glad I'm not the only one who got a Ghibli vibe from it as well.
Edit: cupcake
Neither a mess nor a masterpiece. Just a very good movie. Formulaic but it still works. It's also a lot funnier than his previous films. I will say, I wish we had the version Shinkai originally intended.
SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT
So, reportedly, Shinkai wanted to make this a lesbian love story (or a "yuri", I guess) but the producers told him no. That's why Souta is a chair for much of the film; that way they avoid doing a typical "boy-and-girl" story.
I feel like Shinkai is aware that this formula has its expiration date and wants to do different things, and the thing holding him back is, well, his reputation as "the new Miyazaki" and his commitments to his studio. Personally, I'm ready for something different from Shinkai; we already have a "Your Name" and we don't need another. But Toho would probably disagree.
Trying to be spoiler-free, but I felt that this movie shouldn't feel "complete" the same way a lot of other Shinkai films are. I think this was the production's way to show how they've had to process grief for the past 12 years, while also deriving hope for those who have lived through it in the place they'd least expect: themselves. Each person has their own story to tell as they come to grips with that.
You will have to buy the light novel and other books in June to answer those lingering questions...
This movie hit really close to home for me and I really enjoyed it. I've gone through losing the town I was living in to a natural disaster before, and anytime I go back there I'm a bit overwhelmed emotionally by seeing it as a shell of what it use to be as well as remember the intense emotions I had while fleeing. It was incredibly surreal for me to watch Souta and Suzume gather, and use the energy left behind by the past inhabitants from the ruins.
I really liked it, didn't think it was as good as your name but better than Weathering With You, love all his movies though. Though Suzume was similar to other movies but seemed to change some things up.
Althought it dealt with a heavy topic namely the 2011 earthquakes in Japan this movie felt kinda meh because it left us with a lot of unanswered questions. Here are some of them:
Why did the boy got turned into a chair?
Where is the 4th leg of the chair?
Why was the cat craving Suzume's affection?
Who released the black cat?
Why did the black cat posses the auntie?
Where are all the dads in this movie?
How could that guy who wanted to become a teacher (they earn around 2500$ in Japan) could afford a sports car?
Also the fact that the girl is like 16-17 and the dude is in his 20s is kinda icky but that's besides the point
Not me realizing my notifications were on “Personalized” and not “All” 💀 Def fixed that~ Great video as always!! I would love to see more reviews and your connections to certain ones you were talking about~ As someone who watched the movie I couldn’t agree more about what you were saying 😩 From the point of me not wanting to leave the theater to it being about past trauma, to me needing EVERYTHING about this show (light novel, manga, anime series 😭)
I appreciate having someone to “talk” to about anime~ your videos mean a lot to me 🥰
FIRST!!!!!!!!!!11!111!1!!!!1
💪
The Recommending Ones & Zeros apologizes for the devastating and overwhelming distress that must have happened while waiting on our blessing.
Dont go in expecting your name, you will be dissappointed, its a deeper movie after thinking about the meaning of each character represents in society but its not a romance movie
Cupcake 🧁
I liked the movie because it felt like I was part of the journey with them
Shinkai’s movies are known for having so many amazing insert songs it’s part of the Shinkai movie experience but this film only had the Suzume song but Radwimps and some instrumentals so that was kind of a let down for me.
No spoilers! Anyways so when the guy turned into a chair… haha
it’s in the marketing / trailer 🤔
But it is about romance. She denied it to her aunt, but she did use the “love” word during the rescue in the after ever world.
Daijin got attached to Suzume because she freed and fed “him(?)” in the beginning and “he” got attached to her. He thought they would be best friends. The times she got angry with him, he got scrawny/skinny again.
I think all these creatures/“gods” are emotional creatures, including the worm. That is why the other cat amplified the aunt’s emotions when he appeared in the parking lot. And when they close the doors, the echoes/ghosts of past people are used.
There is love, but love isn't only romantic. I saw it as more familial/platonic love
i hate things like this are only implied on movies. i don't want to think outside the movie too much cus its a waste of time. Thanks for explaining things that I don't understand from this movie. its such a headache watching it for me

I liked Suzume more than Your Name.
It was a great film about closure imo.
It was a great theater experience.
*2011 Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami
the movie was a cliche but the animation was really good..
Messterpiece for sure
Wait so you're the girl i just played val with lol, we got overwhelmed
yessir lmao
Would love all those video ideas, you're one of my favorite anitubers. Especially for things like shojo which lately seem to get analyzed through the lense of like Tumblr politics world view which isn't always bad but it gets a little tiresome to hear about how this or that aspect is problematic and that be like the main focus of a video.
But do you know that shinkai wants to make suzume a yuri romance movie???
🧁🧁🧁
SPOILER WARNING: I say this yesterday and I wasn’t into the film because I wasn’t seeing the overall point of the movie. I kept thinking okay we are closing doors and that’s it. But then the twist at the end happened…with her consoling her childhood self telling her all she needs to do is believe she’ll make through broke me in tears. It all clicked for me. She was missing the love from her mother but found new forms of love in all the various people she met along the way. A teenage girl her own age, another aunt figure and her two children, a older cousin type in the guy and his car, and a boyfriend with the male co lead. It showed she has an abundance of love but you have to go looking for for it. She had to search across Japan and that’s hard but the reality is love is out there in new people so go meet more people in your community. The montage at the end where Suzume keeps on contact with everyone and they regular hang out and the thing connecting them is “see you soon” is tear jerking. Because similar if her mother is died, when Suzume dies she’ll see her mom again in the ever after so we should say goodbye to our loved ones but “see you soon”
The movie is basically the same as Your Name , but with a different fantasy. Its much more sugar coated that is hard to digest for me.
it was kinda a mess but at least it was kinda different from his other works but in my opinion 6/10
Makoto Shinkai says Suzume was almost a lesbian romance, but he didn’t think the Japanese market was ready for a love story between two women. 😢❤
Kd Suzume
i-
It was good but the second half felt not as good as first half
cupcake
I liked this way more than Your Name. I just can’t buy into the idea of high school romance, it’s too cringe.
not really
Copy pasting this here…
WOW. A myth for the recent collective trauma of natural disasters in Japan. Harrowing yet hopeful, mythmaking at its finest.
References to specific events fresh in Japan's memory (3.11 earthquake, Fukushima, etc) punctuate the film with realism: this is a highly relevant documentation of the mood in Japan and the shared sense of loss, fear and hope.
Despite their consistency, these references might fly over the heads of international viewers. However, the story remains solid with a core message of the kindness of strangers and self sacrifice.
I recommend American/International audiences do a little research. Comments on ‘unexplained' plots / disasters seem to miss the references to very recent, very specific and very heavy events for Japan.
Suzume is a beautiful combination of documenting the current feeling of loss and a mythic hope for carrying on.
Suzume is a bloody mess and nowhere near Your Name lol. The pacing is rush, the romance is shit which is worse considering it was whole MC motivation. Don't get me started in the plot; some scenes are just doesn't make sense and too incredibly convenient for the whole story to shittily progress. I have a sense that Shinkai hit his peak with YN but never thought it's going to be this bad! Mofo MAKE ME WATCH GIANT CAT FIGHTING GIANT WORM! And not in good way like in Godzilla. More like fanmade for funny video on Tiktok. I look like maniac laughing at that scene in the theatre 😂
Seriously I feels insulted by the movie. Never again with Shinkai, I consider my payment to watch this garbage as my atonement for watching masterpiece YN illegally.
Did u copy cinemonikas video?
lol nah she copied me 😤😤😤 jk funny though we uploaded it on the same day/same hour 💀
absolute mess of a movie. had half a mind to walk out midway
It's mid
I watched it and omg its gotta be makato's weakest one, like at the bottom imo. Overtime it got cringy, a mess, and everything that happened throughout until the end just came back to square one 🤡 visuals were impressive as always but the story absolutely is a complete mess
