- Rebuilding my 360 into a 390 in my 1967 F100
The engine had been rebuilt before it was bored .030 over and had 30 over 360 pistons.
The main and rod bearing are not original but were still stock sized.
The engine had a rear sump oil pan, which for a 2wd truck is incorrect, this engine came out of a 4wd truck. The tie rods would hit the bottom of the oil pan so I wanted to address that
Before the engine leaked oil from the front and back china walls and from the oil pan.
The engine already had a Edelbrock performer intake and 1405 carb
I was able to source a 390 crank from a junkyard and the connecting rods from Facebook.
I had the crank grinded 10 under, polished, and balanced
The cylinder heads did not have hardened valve seats and the exhaust valves were sunk into the head. I had all new hardened seats installed, guides, and retainers. Exhaust, intake and head surface resurfaced.
I reused timing chain and gears, cam, lifters, cam bearings, water pump.
New Clevite main and rod bearings, moly coated piston rings, standard melling oil pump and front sump pickup. Milodon oil pan, ARP intake manifold and oil pan bolts, ARP crank bolt. Hooker Longtube headers Powermaster Mini Starter. Fel pro gasket kit
Painted the Block, heads, water pump, harmonic Balancer, timing chain cover and valve covers with Dupli-Color ceramic Engine Enamel. 2 coats primer, 3 coats of Ford Blue, and 2 coats of clear coat.
Painted the frame, engine mounts, crossmember, inner fenders and core support with semi gloss Rustoleum black. I cut, buffed and waxed the firewall.
Based off of some calculations it should have 9.93:1 static compression, and make around 330hp and 430 torque under the best conditions with high octane fuel. I am running 87 in it with no issues, since California gas is so expensive
The next step is Pertronix ignition and I want to try out a Holley 4160 with a 1 inch spacer.
Thanks for watching many more videos to come. Any questions just ask away.
I've got 3 of these Engines, I really like them.
The FE is a really good engine!
360 and 390s were good strong engines.
i got my grubby paws on a 390, mine looks like it never got an oil change in its life LOL, had the original rod bearings from 67 and everything
crank was still in fantastic shape, it just needs a polish
Beautiful. I have a 69 with a 360 that needs the exact same thing done to it lol
Nice work..
Good job man!
Great job. Very good video.
Fantastic job. 10/10
So did you have to do anything to the crank bc I have a 64 1/2 thunderbird 390 motor and a 71 Ford F-350 with the 360 trying to figure out motor mounts for the 390 of if I can just use the in stuff out of it in the 360
Cool tunes
She sounds awesome I want to see a burnout
My Dad had a 72 F 150 with a 390 . I think it got like 8 gallons to a mile !! 😂
Yep we do those Tropic 390 crank in it order the correct Pistons and make sure the Raj were the ones that were heavy duty also summer 360 developed cracks in the oil hole up to the heads machine shop would bore the whole in and stuff a pushrod tube down it show up the crack developed he would have no oil in the water weak spot on 360 blocks and some of them had the lightweight rods won't handle the power of a 390 stroke don't forget to modify the oil galleys especially the one from the oil pump to the oil filter needs to be drilled out
The 360 block & 390 block are the exact same block. There is no "360" or "390" block. There is just the 4.050 bore block. Witch included the 360/390/410. The 360 was simply a 352 crank & rods put into a 390 block with high compression 390 pistons. The 352/360 rod is lighter & longer than the 390 rods thus weaker as well, but they are strong enuf to run with the 390 stroke crankshaft. Most dont becouse between the two different rods the 390 rod is the better rod & if they don't use that one most just go aftermarket rods. But back in the hay day of drag racing there were racers that were trying all kinds of combinations with different FE parts. They tried the "longer & lighter" 352/360 rods in different engines. They were lighter weight rotating assemblies for higher, faster revs. Those combos didn't really catch on becouse the aftermarket offers so much better rods even lighter & even stronger that are easy to get. But not really becouse the rod couldn't handle it. Alot even would say that rod is stronger than people give credit for. Now if they are not balanced or simply used up & pushed beyond there reasonable limits then ya, sure they break.
I'm wanting to do this to my 69 F-250 CCLB.
Did the pistons come to zero deck? That’s important for quench , .041 gasket thickness. Headers too.
No, they were not zero deck I don't remember what they were at.
Maiden voyage
can i use the 360 rods and pistons
You block sanded with pistons in it?
I vacuumed and brake kleen it before I assembled it
@@willfrancone3908 well good job on that. Did you use the same crank and just add 390 rods and pistons?
@@colinl5951 Thanks, I got a 390 crank and rods, but reused the 360 pistons.
@@willfrancone3908 ever had it dynoed? I got a 360 shoehorned in a '56 fairlane. Motor runs great but just a gas pig. I wanted to do just what you did. You did a great job man!
@@colinl5951 no I haven't had it dynod. Since I rebuilt it I put an electronic ignition and a holley carb on it. It's probably making 330hp 420t at the flywheel. Based on other people's dynos I've seen
