The builds in this game are a ton of fun. Only thing i wish, is that there were 3 ring slots. Its like driving a 5 speed manual car and getting on the highway - it really wants that 6th gear. You can feel it.
Man, seeing how you stack the synergies all around the Umbral theme is _awesome._ All your videos on this game have been extremely enjoyable, and I'm stoked that you've been enjoying it as much as you are!
I’ve been using the eye umbral socket that lets you have a version of iFrames while doing charge attacks. Essentially, any hits you take while in your charge attack animation will only do wither damage. So, of course, by the time you’re swinging, you’re hitting some enemies and replenishes your health.
@@BriefKeef So after the Belled Rise - you lead out into the area with the vestige on the left (where the robed thief merchant guy is at for some point of time). From the vestige, you continue and almost uturn to the left at the first path - should be a Rector and 3-4 worshippers blocking the path. Go past them leading to a hill with a Hound Mistress, go past her. As you continue on this path you will lead down to a castle-like doorway that is blocked with 2 knights (maybe holy bulwarks?). In umbral - there is a item body sticking out that you can loot the Umbral Eye of Lousch. If running past - flay the body and if you die the item will still be on the ground. Not the easiest run, but I did it as soon as I unlocked the Pilgrim Perch Key and Belled Rise. This eye is completely busted once you learn how to use it correctly. I'm using it with a Radiance build with dual Bloody Glory. I will warn you - its one of those OP but boring things. All you do is a Heavy smash, back off, repeat, and it's almost impossible to die.
I’ve noticed it can be a little inconsistent on when it gets the withered damage, it almost seems like some enemy attacks double hit in one blow and cancel it out, anyone else notice this?
@@kristoferprovencal3608 yep, I’ve noticed it seems to not work sometimes. I bet you’re right about the type of attack that is hitting you. I think there is also a small debuff time before you can use it again. It’s not very long; but half a second to a second maybe.
Awesome build, love the focus around the free spells pendant and wither->poison interaction. I've been running an umbral dual-wield build with Rosamund's Sword + Judge Cleric's Corrupted Sword to hit on tons of damage types and supplement that with weapon buffs. With Bloodbane Ring and a Poison buff, these swords do Physical, Fire, Holy, Wither, Frostbite, Poison, and Bleed simultaneously. With Berescu's and a good selection of items at any given time it's a blast. Unfortunately I botched my first playthrough (RIP Winterberry), so guess I'm gonna have catch Barrage Root on the next one. On the topic of nerf possibilities for the Atrophy pendant, if the balancing was a concern they could increase the amount of wither damage inflicted on you enough to make it less spammy. I'm glad the devs aren't too focused on that sort of thing right now though, the game has enough negative press and concerns with performance and networking right now that it should be about quality of life and player empowerment.
Thank you Cowboy for showing off this Umbral build!! I did a respec for my character tonight to gradually get close to this same build! I’ve got Rosamund sword to +5 and also using a +4 Pieta for dual wielding!
Was there a reason for 12/12 in Str and Agi? There are almost no Umbral weapons in the game, and the ones that scale in Rad/Inf usually have no other requirements. Crushing Gaze has a 15 Strength requirement. The Judge Cleric and Rosamund swords both have 13 req in Str/Agi. Putrid Polearm has 15 req in both. That's all I could think of, though. 15/13 would seem to be the max if you want to use every umbral weapon.
Looked around for builds after getting the game for Christmas, this one REALLY caught my eye. However, it seems that the Pendent that lets you cast infinitely got a nerf that people can't seem to agree is too much, totally deserved or not nearly enough and I'm not far enough into the game to say. Just thought I'd leave this here for anybody like me who was thinking of trying the build out after the patch in...November or so.
This is another awesome video. I've almost finished my first run as a strength/Radiance build and want to get the Umbral ending so I can do my second playthrough with this build. Can't wait!
I love this build. I was initially super skeptical and used umbral magic primarily for support dps on my Ellianne's Sword build (umbral weapon, lingering despair, and those type of spells) but playing with this has been absolutely incredible. The only thing I don't like is that essentially any hit cancels your spellcasts, which can be tough in boss fights, especially if you're playing close up.
One thing you don't mention is how hard it is to get wither health back in melee when all your attacks only do wither damage except for charged attacks. If you can point blank a Javelin, it does pure phys damage, so that will get you back a chunk of wither health, but outside of that you'll find yourself being pressured pretty bad.
I’ve been watching your videos since dark souls 2 Loving the content on this game keep it up man!! Just started the game last night loving daggers think you could do a version of a dagger build?
Hey cowboy have you tried this build in pvp? I’ve got everything except one ring for increased damage and I’ve been invaded 3 times today and wreaked them with barrage of echos. Much better then I thought it one shots them if a few of the orbs connect. Awesome build and great video and explanation!
Your right about this build my guy holy crap! I've made it to the tower of pennance in like 2 hours from a fresh start after respec XD used your build plus pietas sword just for some more power
So I forgot which one does it, if its a ring or a pendant, but one of them lets you cast without mana and converts what you casted into wither damage. But when you have wither damage you can regain that damage by damaging enemies and it can even work with spells. So when you are casting with wither and you hit something, does it give you that health back? LMAO you answered the question like two minutes later. So yeah, this build is a friggin broken BEAST!
About the potential nerf: first thing that came to my mind was that damage dealt via the talisman (or more specifically by using health as a casting resource) will _not_ recover wither damage, only when casting with mana. Or at least recover less wither or something along those lines.
Just did a run with a similar build and got a lot of use out of the martyrdom spell. Slow-ish cast but has insane tracking and when the nail emerges from the ground it ticks a bunch of times for extra damage in a nice aoe. Found it really good for locking down encounters with multiple elite enemies.
I did a putrid child build somewhat similar. Went with rosamund sword just because i like it more and used the crafters essence to save the 10 levels of strength and agility. Have umbral weapon as the fourth spell. I have no way to prove it but it feels like it makes applying frostbite way quicker. Been trying to limit myself to 100, feels like the game gets way too easy if you outlevel it even a little
The best build i have done yet is a strength/radiance hybrid. Devotion's might can do immense damage if built right. But i use 2 ebonlight abiding defender swords that i farmed, they are absolutely BUSTED. Bleed and frostbite machine with wither damage
As far as I can tell they only nerfed the throwing distance of Latimers massively in comparison to your throws in this vid. Other than that this slaps hard still. Best build in the game I agree
Doing a bow build, but I'm going for the Umbral ending for the putrid child class. I'm going to do right by Sparky this time, and then I have a very special present for Gerlinde. She is getting what she deserves this time.
Oh my god, now I know what this one guy used against in me pvp, I just thought he was using tons of mana crystals. Didn’t realize this was even possible. I’m totally respecing tonight to try this
Do you remember around what level you switched from radiant spells to umbral? Edit: don't worry about it I worked through it. Having just played a pure strength build this build here is hilariously strong vs bosses in comparison.
I run this build in my NG+1 and I agree it is a lot of fun for normal mobs. In bossfights the Barrage is kinda tricky for me: I have to take the boss out of the target to place the orbs right near him. If I have him targeted the very ofte go way far behind the boss. But taking a boss out of the target is very risky, because you very often do not see what he is actually doing or which attack he actualy prepairs. So on some bosses you can not use barrage and so you use a lot of your potential damage imho. What are your experiences with boss fights?
@FightinCowboy I feel like the drop rate of that Fungus axe is so rare because, i have been farming it for at least 3 hours and the only weapon that drops is the regular pick axe; Any suggestions? Thanks for all your amazing content by the way. Alrighty. So. 30 minutes after i wrote this i got 2 of them.. so i guess, it could take up to 3 and 1/2 hours/ lol
I feel like the one sword from your radiance build could work too since it scales Inf/Rad. Although it’s not gonna do the build up damage like double toothpick xD I might combine the two builds just bc I love the light saber look, lol.
I prefer Painful Echo for mob control, Misery Missle for Long Distance sniping, Martyrdom because it can pass through floors/walls. Diminishing Missile is very good opener for elites/bosses though.
Just finished Lord class today but for Umbral ending. Starting Putrid Child soon and i have got to try this out. Hopefully better for all the flame resistant bosses at endgame 😂
Question: If I want to cast an Inferno spell is an Inferno catalyst going to be my best option or do the spells only care about spell power? I ask because the Root rings let you cast spells from different schools. So when casting with a Radiant catalyst (for instance) would Inferno spells be scaling off of my Radiant stats? Or another example is if I used the Berescu catalyst to cast an Inferno spell will its spell power stat put out more damage than the best maxed Inferno catalyst?
Does Umbral Weapon cause Frost build up? I know Radiant Weapon actually causes Smite build up without actually mentioning it, whereas the salts are actually split into two: i.e. Holy Salt and Smite Salt, so it might be worth it to look into/ test Umbral weapon since frost seems to be associated with Umbral.

I, very strangely, can't. I don't know why, or if it's expected. The shrine rewards for me on PS5 v1.1.222, which apparently is the latest patch for consoles are all out of whack. All I can see from shrines are tincts, armor, fingers and mirrors. No chunks, or scourings. :'(
My co-op shrine sells nothing apart from armor and tincts. Nevertheless, I managed to get a friend to "drop" some for me with cloud saves. 😅 BTW, any other weapon suggestions with this build? Okay if it's weaker. I just have this weird thing with using aesthetically pleasing weapons. 😅
yo I had no idea about the interaction of poison and wither, I have been wanting to make an umbral assassin, the bowman fungal daggers are super strong, their speed ends up working in your favor, the only problem is dagger builds don't lend themselves much to be caster hybrids, there's like the one radiant dagger, jeffrey's umbral scaling is actually quite poor and skinstealer knives kinda low too
I thought the umbral eye was bugged because not only light but also heavy attacks do wither, you have to fully charge it to deal regular damage, I was excited about it until I noticed it wouldn't work but the poison changes everything, I'm excited about it again
Wow I think I want to switch from radiance to this to mix it up and the fact it looks insanely powerful. Only got 1 putrid pickaxe though so I’m thinkin of doing one of the pickaxe and one putrid child sword or 2 of those 🤔
I made this exact build the other day lol BUT the only difference was I was using a ring that caused bleed when you proc poison (I forget its name) and it was insane damage.
Umbral builds being worth the 50/50 investment in the casting stats is good news to me. I love Hexer builds in Dark Souls 2; can't wait to run an Umbral build in a playthrough or two lol
Pickaxe runes are increase radiance, increase inferno, and dual wield bonus.
+poison buildup not ideal?
Unnecessary we already deal 300 poison per swing.
oh is 300 the mark? like instant proc? (i dont really know)
@@FightinCowboy
@@willy_lime its not but we generally proc in 2 hits anyway and once its procced additional poison does nothing so its not gonna do much for us here
