  • Setting off on the 1,200km (750mi) Great Divide Trail thru hike! Starting at the US/CAN border and continuing north far into the rocky mountains of Canada. This is the gear I will be bringing on that trip. I expect temperatures into the 20s fahrenheit, lots of potential for rain, mosquitoes, long long food caries upwards of 8 days at a time, and grizzly bears! among other challenges.
    My Gear List:
    Backpack - tinyurl.com/ykhnu4fh

    I will be hiking this trail with my partner Sprocket, so we are sharing some gear. Most notably is that I have a two person quilt, while she has the two person tent. I forgot to mention in the video but we will both have bear spray as well!
    We are both super excited to hike the GDT! Hopefully it will be the most amazing trail to ever exist, as in many cases that is how people who have done it before talk about it! So here goes, our adventure across the Canadian Rockies. Through Waterton Lakes, Banff, Kootenay, and Jasper. The hardest and most interesting thru hike in Canada.

      You also forgot to mention your tent. Found out through a link to purchase one from your site. Thanks I'm a hammock camper, but I'd definitely have a Duplex if I was a ground dweller.

      @MYB3ST1 I never camp above tree line. I day hike above tree line and head back down to camp. If that means I can't do a few trails then sobeit. There are literally a million other trails I can backpack. It has never caused me pause before.

    I think it's likely that "packing your fears" will be more like "preparing adequately for a ton of mosquitoes and cold rain" by the end. I started the GDT without rain pants because I never felt the need on the triple crown, but I bought a pair before I finished. On a more upbeat note, I recommend taking as many of the high route alternates as you can; they're typically amazing. Happy trails!

    While bears don’t often compromise ursacks (example photos online) they will, with some frequency, paw, chew, and maul them until their contents are inedible for humans. Just something to consider when considering contingencies.

The Rocky Mountains can be cold - especially when it’s windy and definitely at night - and don’t be surprised if you see snow - it can happen year round in Alberta/BC. Any pro tips for keeping your cold soak jar clean on multiple days on the trail?

    Have a fantastic journey! Are the straps on your pack a personal custom job or ‘factory’?

    • @jhonyermo
      @jhonyermo Před 10 měsíci

      I think a 'factory' job. From PaLante: "designated stake pocket, and stretchy bottom and shoulder strap pockets.“

      @@jhonyermo thanks, but it’s the running vest style chest straps I was referring to. Cheers

    My uncle lives in Calgary and he says " It can snow any of 365 days of the year " . You may want to add enough gear to be able to handle adverse weather. I have not seen a video on this trail before so I will like to see yours. :)

      Rough filming spot but I figured better to film it than to not at all 🤷 though I'll be happy that I don't often have to deal with bugs like that while recording something

    Great video. I'm just curious to know why you are using a tent instead of a tarp? You came to my attention in the past because you were such a proponent of using a tarp and going as light as possible.

    Talk to me about the turkey basting bag in your list. You feel comfortable with that for odor proofness than an opsak in the ursak?

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Yea I think it's pretty good! Mostly I am confident in an ursack, rather than thinking any odorproof bag is foolproof
