- The universe is unbelievably big - trillions of stars and even more planets. Soo… there just has to be life out there, right? But where is it? Why don’t we see any aliens? Where are they? And more importantly, what does this tell us about our own fate in this gigantic and scary universe?

Sure aliens could have difference technology , but they deal with the same problems we do when it comes to space travel. They have to figure out how to get far away quickly without hitting anything that could ruin the trip.
Well we have no idea how many possibilities are out there for intelligent life, maybe not all civilizations start with steam engine! Instead they may be using anti-gravity machines or warp drives according to their knowledge and material of the planet
You missed a point in the video. If the universe is billions years old surely one species or multiple millions of species would have gotten that far with technology.... but there's none.....
Lol. *hits a 2 foot wide rock at 2,200 km/s* aww, our trip is ruined

This paradox seems to assume that all other life forms need and have the same components as we humans do when its likely they dont
The aliens are probably just like microbes living in oceans or are plant-like and consume energy from light.
Really tho? I mean they still have to struggle with the same universal laws that we do
True, an alien could be a tiny plant or even a fish of some sort. Yet still it would be nice to find higher Intelligence

Fun fact: The Fermi Paradox has a new option thanks to the books 3 bodies problem, and Dark forest. The new option states that the wall is other civilisations that are so advanced it would be like an ant trying to comprehend an elephant. The terrifying thing is, this could actually be right. We, Humanity may be feverishly screaming out to a universe that wants to eat us.

OMG😂😂😂😂 That was great
Ever wonder if aliens are reading these replies and are like, "Are they joking... or do they actually know we're here?"
my ideas and theories:
1: Aliens are not yet capable of traveling distances long enough to get to planet to planet fast enough.
2: there may be some factor that makes life much much rarer than we thought, rendering us one or the only species left
3: something happened that wiped out all the other aliens
4: most other advanced species killed themselves before they could develop enough high tech rockets to take them from place to place
5: we are in an alien zoo or we are prisoners of aliens
6: We are one of the first beings ( not my idea )
7: Aliens are ready, unpredictable, and fast on their way.
nice
Thought of aliens is scary but the thought of being alone in the entire universe is equally scary

Who is to say this is accurate though? We deem planets "habitable" by our standards who's to say an extraterrestrial even has the same basic needs as us maybe the breathe nitrogen and eat rocks we don't know...
Thats what I'm thinking, they might not even need air 💀💀
Remember that life on earth began as a series of very specific reactions in some very specific conditions. When calling other planets "habitable" doesn't only mean that humans can live there, it means that they may have those conditions for life to begin like on earth. Of course, it might develop in ways we don't even imagine.

These aliens are probably so advanced that they can’t bother with our primitive minds. It makes me sad I will never get to see the future of humanity. Will we evolve to be smarter? Will we kill each other? Or will we colonize the stars? I don’t know, I’ll just die here in the meme era.

I doubt this is it, but it wont be much further off. Probably in the next century if i had to guess. Look at how unprepared we were for corona and how bad we are handling it...if this was as bad as some previous historical viruses, we'd be done for. Im convinced the great filter will be a virus.
Majority of the Politicians running the world right now are making 2020 into a Great Filter. I wonder if this is the year where most politicians fall from position
Maybe its just start of the great filter
The thing that I always think about in a situation like this is that while something is inhabitable to us it could be inhabitable to another species so any planet could have life on it
Except for the tiny problem that that's not how things work. There are certain criteria that simply has to be met for any kind of life to even start evolving and even more for it to evolve into something more complex. So far we have not found any traces of even the simplest forms of life anywhere outside our planet. They might exist somewhere but the chance for us to discover them is extremely low with how huge the universe is.

*Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.*
-Arthur C Clarke.
This is appeared in xcom,if i remember correctly
@@gandalf5306 I was hoping this was the one reply
Its terrifying if we're actually alone in an infinite void.
Its terrifying if we are actually being watched or something
Indeed. Sometimes the answer is closer than we think. If we are alone, it means one of two things: other civilisations exist/existed but can't reach us for a reason, or we are about to die out, because limited intelligence can only bring you so far, especially now that we have 'porn, Instagram models (men and women) of lighter intelligence, who are now considered a'perfect mate' by all men which means that dumb people obssessed with 'perfect Looks' are mating with other dumb people who are obssessed with the gym, plastic surgery, taking selfies etc but cannot find time to use their brain in reality and this causes a reverse in Darwin's theory of evolution, where the most 'intelligent and fittest' survive. Reminds me of the film 'Idiocracy'.In 5000 years it will only be plastic people left who will have to 'flex their abs' at climate change, new viruses and unknown bacterial infections, and threats from 'space'. Humans WILL die out.
Nope as we are alone it’s impossible for us to come in contact with other life even if they were out there or the humans have only accomplished so much in 400k years image what we will accomplish in on other 400k years we have no idea what’s possible
“Either we are alone in this Universe or not. Both are equally terrifying.”

Also the Type 1-3 civilizations sound unachievable.
If you were to use all available resources there's
1) Going to be resources that just aren't worth it (burning wood, coal, etc.) compared to others (Nuclear Fusion & Fission)
Unless of course it's meant that the most efficient source is used
and
2) It's impossible to use the completely use all the of the Sun's power because some power has to go into the ecosystem just to keep us alive, and a Dyson sphere sounds completely idiotic. Really? A giant dome around the Sun? We'd all freeze to death!
and
3) A type 3 civilization can never exist. If 1 country can't control all of Earth, then 1 planet isn't going to take over a galaxy
TL:DR Type 1-3 civilizations are stupid
Sorry for being a downer but I just had to gush, great vid anyway
These can exist. You're thinking about this in a regular human perspective. We're still bickering over race and religion and can't even solve our own problems. 1 country can't take over the earth, because we are still primitive compared to type 2 or even 1 civilizations. We are still on a .7 type. Type 2 can exist, but we don't know how to do it because we can't comprehend it yet. And a type one is possible, but we'd have to colonize other planets or we'll likely just destroy ourselves.
+Ko Gyi
To harness all of the power of the Sun would leave other important stuff deprived of the sun they need
for example;
Plants won't be able to do photosynthesis because we're taking their power
The Earth would freeze over
Wildlife will die off
(RIP the penguins)
And also a Dyson Sphere, unlike how this video explained it, isn't theoretical at all.
You need more resources than the entire Earth just to build an insignificant portion of it. and if we somehow even build half of a Dyson sphere, there's no way we'd be able to bring it to the sun. In fact the mass would so great it would most likely overwhelm Earth's. crush it into tiny pieces. I can go on and on but you get the jist of it
A type 1 civilization that uses all available resources is both stupid, and wasteful. Why would you use wind and solar power if a fusion reactor can keep a country settle with a few grams of Hydrogen?
BTW I feel this term is coined by like a sci-fi TV show, is that true?
+DauntingDays You don't understand the concept of the Dyson Sphere my friend.
"Plants won't be able to do photosynthesis because we're taking their power
The Earth would freeze over
Wildlife will die off
(RIP the penguins)"
- The Dyson Sphere is an object of much greater size than you seem to think. It doesn't just engulve the sun, it engulves the goldenlocks zone. We would be on the inside of it's surface where the sun would still shine.
"You need more resources than the entire Earth just to build an insignificant portion of it. and if we somehow even build half of a Dyson sphere, there's no way we'd be able to bring it to the sun."
- We would build it in space, duh.
"In fact the mass would so great it would most likely overwhelm Earth's. crush it into tiny pieces."
- That's the biggest problem with the concept of the Dyson Sphere, however by the time a civilization reaches the ability to construct one, I'm sure they'd work around it somehow.
"A type 1 civilization that uses all available resources is both stupid, and wasteful. Why would you use wind and solar power if a fusion reactor can keep a country settle with a few grams of Hydrogen? "
- No, a type 1 civilization is CAPABLE of using all avaliable resources.
+James Miller
"we would build it in space duh"
That doesn't answer the problem. The sphere requires more resources than THE ENTIRE EARTH! Literally impossible to build anywhere.
The fact that it covers the goldilocks zone is even worse considering it's mass. It would create a Sun-Sphere system and completely fuck up all the orbits. There's no way around that just as there's no way to travel through space @ the speed of light

Me: "Oh.."
Fr tho, the thought of us being either the first or only civilization is kind of awesome. It means we have an entire universe to ourselves without having the stress of some unknown advanced civilization constantly watching and looming over us. We know for a fact that life exists, and that is us!
OfWeave or you can get philosophical and reason that one of these advanced civs have technology that are able to run simulations of planets like us this is statistically a whole lot likelier than being actually alive.
We’ve also seen very little of the Milky Way so if a different civilization isn’t in the let’s conquer the entire universe phase or is busy with it we probably haven’t seen them.
It also felt like “in the Milky Way” became the universe at one point in this video when other civs could have the ability to cross galaxies.
It’s also possible that we have seen other “life” but it’s beyond our understanding.
We assume far too often that life is in any way like us or visible in spectrums we use to discover new planets.
OfWeave but honestly there’s no reason to worry or care for these kinds of things rather than entertainment purposes since it won’t influence anything in our lives unless we let it. We’ve barely been to the moon we aren’t even what we understand as stage 1 (but might be stage nothing for civilizations that have actually been here for a while) it’s not like we pose a threat or if others would care for our existence. (If they can care or if we would be able to pose a threat since they were likely to be earlier and will always be ahead)
OfWeave I also forgot that if were being watched by anything it’s a fat we and not a me or you
I hope the people who wrote this realise they're still going to die.

PvP gives more experience.. The PvP is way to underleveled.. If we had stick to PVE we would still be using sticks as our best weapon..

Love the knights of sidonia reference!
I personally think this paradox fails to take into account how impossibly large the universe is. On Earth we have planes and jets capable of traveling hundreds of MPH , satellites mapping the entire Earth and billions of people , however if I were to hide a marble at a random location on Earth there's a good chance nobody would be able to find it.
Regardless how large the universe is, the chance for life to arise on other planet (abiogenesis) is very very very small. Even in a perfectly habitable planet like earth, every single organism shares only ONE common ancestor.
Even if life were to exist on other planets, there's no guarantee they'd evolved into an intelligent species what more a space travelling one
Even IF there is life elsewhere, it'd take forever to know it. Light itself from distant stars takes millions of years to reach us here. An alien civilization trying to travel here would take vastly greater time. Add in that space itself is expanding further extending the distance. Probability says it's likely that other life is out there, but we'll just never know it.
a better analogy would be if the marble was instead a tiny speaker, that gets louder over time.
they sized it down to the milky way because of just how complicated and uncertain it would be to take EVERYTHING into account
Fun fact: milky way is the only galaxy with milk

I do not understand why people can't imagine that other advanced or not civilization is so different with our vision of life that we just do not acknowledge it as life at all, let alone intelligent. Vice versa is actual as well.

Where does kurz gesagt name comes from?
The problem isn't life, it's _intelligent_ life. Life per se is probably extremely common. It seems to have come into being on Earth as soon as conditions permitted. But intelligent life? There's a good chance it's vanishingly rare.
+Lytrigian This pretty much sums up my argument of why we haven't see alien space ships everywhere. The dino's were around for millions of years, yet none of them build anything that could be considered technology. I would also say that alien life might be similar with creatures that haven't built a civilisation and are still living the hunt/hunted lifestyle.
Iceart If multicellular creatures even exist. In our case, it took about 600 million years for life to come into being after the Earth's crust solidified, at the beginning of the Archaean era. But true multicellular life (as opposed to undifferentiated colonies of single cells) took another 1.4 billion years to evolve after that. So maybe not even multicellular life is inevitable.
Don't I feel special
SuperDudu72 I was talking about life, not a particular chemical basis for it. And there are other reasons for suspecting that intelligent life capable of building civilizations are very rare.
+Iceart Wouldn't other planets with other creatures still be interesting? And in a way, if we find these first and can colonize them, better than finding another species more advanced than us? By the time we find another species I hope we are at least a type-1 civilization on the way to becoming type 2 or it doesn't make sense to try.

Scary to think that life may depend on a civilization that watched reality TV, films people in trouble instead of helping, pushes strangers in front of subways, and can pretty much turn anything into a political argument.

Good one I like it
The thought of being the only 'intelligent' species in the Universe might scare you, but maybe think of it like this: If it turns out we are all alone as mankind, you are one of the lucky few who actually gets to experience life in the most advanced way yet.
How is that even possible though? There's 200 billion to possibly 2 trillion galaxies in the universe. You would think mere probability would dictate that there's at least a few forms of intelligent life outside of our own supercluster even.
Are the odds of intelligent life just that scarce that even out of 2 trillion galaxies there's only one planet with this type of life?
@@AltairEgo1 But what if the odds of any life existing was so small that only one planet got it. Humans assume that because they exist others must but it’s possible that we are the luckiest things ever. Unlikely but possible.
No, no, it isn't one in the UNIVERSE, but it might be one in the OBSERVABLE universe. The universe is probably infinite in size, and if so, the only question would be what is the DISTANCE to the nearest one. If it's 100 light years, they're probably going to make contact soon. If it's a trillion, it's nothing one needs to be concerned with, they might as well not exist.
Although depressingly horrifying yes it can be seen that way and similarly, but its just simply quite impossible
