I think the main reason the 300 Win mag is so popular is that it is chambered in almost every rifle platform available in one way or another! Second would be availability of ammo to purchase. The last reason is recoil which the 300 Win mag has the least of the bunch. 30-378 WHBY mag is the King but is way overboard and at about 1,000 rounds or less per barrel comes at a cost other than its ammo or recoil!

There is a lot of hype for big fast cartridges that has nothing to do with the comparison and it is a lot of fun. It is truly the American way. If you want to get impressed, go to the 378 Weatherby Magnum. Mine will shot a 270 Barnes TSX at 3,140 FPS and a 300 grain Partition at 3,000 FPS. It comes with 78 lbs of recoil. Extremely accurate at distance.

When I use to pay attention, the 300 Norma was called a 308 Norma. Don't know if they're the same or it's a new cartridge.
It's easy to load a 300 Win Mag to over 3100 fps with 180gr bullets.

    • @jefferywilliams7687
      @jefferywilliams7687 Před měsícem +5

They are not. 308 Norma Mag is very close to a 300 Win Mag. 300 Norma Mag will match the 30-378.

The 300 Norma Mag was developed as the new sniper cartridge in Europe. It is an excellent round! It will push a. 215 over 3,000 FPS and a 230 over 2,950 FPS.

I've hunted with my .300 Win Mag for 34 years and it performed exceptionally every hunt. I've taken deer from 50 yards to out over 700 yards and every time the animal collapsed where it stood with only one exception, and that deer only made it 50 yards. What more can one want from a rifle cartridge? There are slight differences between the .300 Weatherby and the .300 RUM, but the way I see it you're only chasing numbers. All of them will probably get the same results, so I guess it boils to preference and ego.

    • @jefferywilliams7687

300 Win Mag is a wonderful cartridge. I have owned several since 1977. USMC has adopted it as their Long Range Sniper Cartridge. It is a great choice and is popular worldwide. One of the most popular cartridges in Africa. Of all the magnums, it has the best factory ammunition availability.

The 30-378 is really so overbore that it’s a waste of gunpowder with anything less than a 30 to 32 inch barrel. Many people consider it more of a novelty.

Nice comparison. Don’t worry about the “why didn’t you include x,y,z”. Always going to have that. I built my 30 cal mag on a 98 mauser. Its the 30-338. 338 mag necked down to 30 cal. Basically it’s rge 308 Norma Mag. Norna beat Winchester and Temingto to market with it. Very similar to the 300 WM. I think the 30-338 is more efficient. Was used in 1000 yard matches back in the day. I always like path less travelled.

I’ve seem a handful of 30-378s. Mostly bean field hunters in La and Ms. Only offered in factory Weatherby rifles unless custom built. I’ve only seen it offered by Weatherby ammo for about $150 a box last time I saw it.
I owned a 300RUM for about a year. Bought it with expectations to hunt out west. Went on one whitetail hunt with it and never shot at an animal. My uncle had one that he hunted with for years. Big time overkill for whitetail in La though.

Great comparison of these factory loads. Any of these will kill anything on this continent. The problem with the very largest 30's is that it takes so much more powder to gain only a modest increase in velocity that I just don't feel it's worth the extra recoil for such a small gain. Austin from Reloading Weatherby has had some very impressive velocity and accuracy from his Vanguard. Maybe he would share his pet loads with you.

At the end of the day all of these are incredible rounds. The Win mag is by far the most popular but the Weatherby is and will always be the most legendary 300 mag hands down. And lets be honest, nothing says you’re serious more than taking a Weatherby afield. I bought mine 25 years ago and it’s terminal to whatever it hits. I only used Weatherby ammo because it’s a little hotter than Remington and Hornady but doubt it really makes a difference at this level of performance

Used to own an early Weatherby pre mark v chambered for the 300 wby mag and built around an FN mauser action. Difficult to find ammo where I live and the rifle was too heavy to carry up the mountains. Regretfully I had to sell it. Later I got a Ruger hawkeye chambered in 300 win mag. It weighs less, recoils less, ammo is available, and though I liked the Wby I wouldn't change my Ruger for it.

Berger also load 300 norma. I can push 225 eldms to 3060 in mine using retumbo. I gave up that speed for more consistency with h1000 at 2940fps. Before I was using the 225 eldm I used the 208 eldm at 3160fps using retumbo.

It's nit always the caliber, Roy Weatherby went to Africa with a 257 weatherby & killed every BIG Game he hunted, that 257 weatherby is just a .25 caliber it goes to show it the person behind the gun.

I guess its a problem compairing bullet drop, as it says more about the BC and if its not the same bullet and weight for every cartridge, it does not tell that much. I guess muzzle velocity with the same bullet weight is the only way to say "how powerful it is". The bullet choice when it comes to BC can change the drop from a "stone" to a "fighter jet" in every cartridge.

Except for the Norma and the newer prc, most of those are not loaded to their full potential. As long as your rifle has the twist rate, you can get close to those numbers that the Norma is putting up with the RUM or the weatherby. The win can get pretty close to if you allow yourself to load beyond COAL.

The 300 Weatherby is a great cartridge but for powder case capacity it doesnt really perform much better than the old 300wm in speed. Handloaders can gain performance from the 300wm but the overbore Weatherby cartridges have you limited. In my opinion the PRC cartridges are a fad and will more than likely be replaced by something newer and touted to be better..... the old standby cartridges work just fine
