    Bonus point for safety: when cutting the jacketing, just cut the first inch or so, and PULL the jacketing back about six inches. Don't use a knife for the full six inches. If you insist on using a knife, inspect the conductor visually and by touch to make sure the individual jackets are 100% intact.
    Here's why: If you cut the full six inches of the jacketing with a sharp knife, you risk knicking/cutting the jacketing around each individual conductors. Knicked and exposed wire is unsafe. Higher resistance, more heat under load, and a chance of arcing between two exposed conductors.

    Also of note is that the color-coding system is pretty recent. If it's pre-2000s (as in my home) it's usually all white (unless it's a high-gauge wire, usually black or gray, as in a service entrance cable).

    Good video, funny camera work. :P It did get me thinking about 12/3 wiring for ceiling fans. We should rewire the house someday because we have old aluminum wiring. It can be properly adapted for safety, but if we needed to do a full rewire, it would be smart to run 12/3 cable to the ceiling fan so we could operate power to the fun and light separately. Yeah, 14/3 would be fine, but since this house has always used 12 gauge wire for 20 amp lines, I'd just stick to that. Although, code probably forces 12 gauge wire in between switch and light on a 20 amp line in case something wrong happens. Consistency is a good policy.

      The NEC even calls out how to do this in article 314.16, tables314,16(A) and 314.16(B) 314.16(A) lists common box sizes and maximum amount of conductors allowed. For example, a 1900 box that is 1-1/2" deep can have 14 no.14, 13 no.12s, and 11 no.10 wires.
      To convert AWG to cubic inches, 14 is 2cu in. 12 is 2.25, 10 is 2.5 per 314.16(B).
      Any devices are counted as 2 of the largest size wire in box, as connected to device, a double allowance. The grounds are counted as ONE of the largest wires present. Cable clamps, if internal, are counted, as are fixture hickeys and support fittings.

    Anyone can reply to my question. I was drilling into a wall to run some camera cable and nicked a Romex number 12 cable enough to trip the breaker. There doesn't appear to be any cut to the wire itself but it definitely took off the sheathing. It's a small Nick where the drill hit it but I don't see any cuts to the wire at all. Would this wire need to be replaced in entirety? Or can it just be electrical taped to recover the exposed wire. The damaged area is less than a half an inch

    • @djscrizzle
      @djscrizzle Před 6 lety

      I'd opt for replacement between the places that segment of the circuit goes, on the basis that it could arc and start a fire in the future. In times where ONLY the jacket tears, as it can while first installing it, a wrap of white, yellow, or orange tape (match the color of the jacket) is perfectly acceptable.
      Note that you do not have to follow the same path exactly,especially if it's easier to fish cable between points, up walls and across attics, under floors, etc. Other things I've been known to do, is run pipe between 2 metal boxes on different floors and pull THHN between these points to facilitate future circuits. Or run 3 and 4-wire MC cable where I'm fishing it in walls.

    • @joeboe5279
      @joeboe5279 Před 6 lety +4

      Bobby Medina would not recommend this. 14/2 will only handle 15 amps whereas the 12 will handle 20 amps. If someone were to see the 12/2 and think the circuit could handle 20 amps not knowing there was 14 gauge wiring down the line this could lead to problems. Best to keep with the 12/2 for the entirity of the circuit

      @S33Electrical  Před 8 lety

      Yeah I don't see a problem with that. You'll just want to make sure it's sized properly, not subject to any physical damage, and I wouldn't suggest running romex outdoors without being in a conduit or raceway of some type.

      NEC 690.31 backs this up, though commonly, types XHHW, and UF are used outdoors with success. NEC article 340.10(2) specifically allows UF to be used this way, in PV/Solar systems, in accordance with NEC 690.31.
      Note that NM-B (Romex) cannot be ran in wet locations, buried, or fished inside exterior masonry wall voids, nor embedded in cement/mortar/grout/plaster, as called out in article 334.12 (A), 334.12(B)

      That's also not permitted, in the open, as all splices have to be made in boxes. With UF cable, this is the only way to do it outdoors, whenever a listed/approved splice kit is used. Usually, I'll turn the ends up into a 6x6 plastic junction box for accessibility, and splice with dryconns, however, these are listed for direct burial.

      Michael Young ha! That's funny... I recall being in direct competition, or having to gain your approval with being competent in this trade. I made a comment about Romex being garbage, which it is... it's only practical use is for temp power on a job site, if that. In this city, where we lay pipe, like good Electricians do... Chicago code even requires that temp services be piped, unless it's for temporary lighting. Now I could give you the formula for a "3 Bend Saddle..." I could give you the formula for a, 4 bend saddle... but, not be an asshole on purpose, which as you can see I fairly good at, no lessons for free son. I don't work for you, nor do I get any checks signed by you. Until the day cometh, where in I need your approval... which will require you to be paying me... you can fuck off. I not in this trade to seek you or any other Electrician's approval. In fact we are all competitors, and I will not recite code, formulas or any other secrets to you. Suffice it to say that I've bent so much fucking pipe, roughed in enough shit, that I don't need a formula do a three bend, 4 bend... offset, gooseneck, 90, 90 with a kick, back to back 90, or an Z. You fucking CZcamsrs have something stupid to say Everytime somebody attacks something you like... like fucking Romex. Fuck Romex. That shit causes more problems than the money you save on pipe. You pipe a house right once, if there is ever a problem, you just pull new wire. And if you, "know what you're doing.." 😂😂😂 in the first fucking place...there should be no problems. There is your school lesson for the day... oh and one more great thing about laying pipe, bitches love it... and you actually feel like you did something, instead of like a low voltage guy... running a bunch of rg6 and cat6 around the house, stapling everything like a bunch of sissies.
