  • When filets fail in freeCAD it can be a annoying and time consuming to figure out what's wrong especially for beginners to the program. We understand some of the main reasons why fillets fail and how to solve them.

    The near-planar issue is a bit sneaky at times but the adding of a sketch fillet, as you demoed, usually solves it for me.

    Years ago I saw a video of a man who was having a lot of trouble with his computer. He slapped his monitor around enough to knock it on the floor & when that didn't work he pulls a gun & shoots it. That is exactly what the learning curve of FreeCAD makes you feel like. Most of the time the help is only useful to someone who knows how to do it anyway. Don't mention the oh so informative FC error messages 😠
    I resisted the urge to do either & over the last 2 years have become quite competent with FC. It's the only CAD software I use now & it's great 😀

      Tell me about it😂. I was doing one of Mangoes exercises last night, and first time it worked. Next time failed, then failed then failed. My mistake, I was selecting an object from the graphics screen, and not the design tree. Hey, I think freecad is a superb package, but my hair tearing is thro the roof sometimes. Having used Solidworks professionally for 15 years, I cant remember it ever giving me such high blood pressure moments 😂😂

      @@TheScotsalan I've tried Solidworks, Fusion 360, Catia, OnShape, Solid Edge & others, I liked some, hated others & kept falling back to FreeCAD. I liked SolidWorks the best but wasn't going to sell limbs to use a legitimate version so stuck it out with FC & am now getting on well with it & best of all, when it all turns to shit, I can find my way back again instead of deleting & start over

    Yet another great tutorial video.
    Not only on the prime topic, but brimming over with use of features that I hadn't realised even existed.
    Many thanks.

    The interesting thing is that sometimes, in the same place where a fillet fails a chamfer works and vice versa

    Excellent video, Solidworks does some of these things automatically, it's good that FreeCAD gives more control

    Fillets can really drive me crazy when having e. g. a loft intersecting w/ another object and I want to have a smooth inner edge. Sometimes splitting design into separate bodies first and then boolean join them again helps, but not always… although it looks like inserting a fillet should be easy.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  Před 11 měsíci +2

      I know what you mean, it's that time you look at the model and start to dread that stage. Loft intersections are notoriously a pain. That would of been a great example to add to the video actually. The angle of those edges where they meet can cause the same issue as the draft face example. Thanks for adding the information about how you try to get around the issue.

    Wireframe is an easy way of picking up edges.(Should o kept my mouth shut and not stopped the video to make a comment😁)

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  Před 11 měsíci +2

      lol, not a problem :) still great to have the comment as it gives a shortcut to the tip. Actually, yourself (or anyone) may be able to help, what else do you use wire frame view mode (or the other modes) for? For example with wire frame I use it for as you said easy selection of edges and also I would set say a cube to wire frame on the view tab if I was going to use it to hang geometry off (kind of like a scaffolding), say a curves workbench freehand b-spline connected to the corner points. I am trying to find other reasons to use the different view modes available.

      For picking up edges and internal alignment o 2 bodies is all I can think of at the mo!

      in the development version of freecad there is now a selection filter tool that allows you to limit selection to only the desired type of geometry

    I've got an issue with putting a large radius on the venturis of a breather backplate that I'm making for my motorcycle. My bike has a throttle body with two 47 mm venturis side-by side on 52 mm centers. I can execute a large radius (8 mm) with other CAD software easily but with FreeCad I can only get 2 mm because anything larger and the two 47 mm venturis bump into each other and FreeCad crashes.

    Polyline has a continous arc mode cycled in with 'M', with auto tangency constraints and all, no need to use the arc tool. First it was a bit unintuitive for me that you have a well defined follow up arc segment for every point on the plane, it also constrains you in ways you never intended (would be cool to somehow seamlessly fine tune the previous segment endpoint without leaving polyline drawing mode with MMB or something like that), but the option is there whatsoever.

    How do you add fillets to an imported STL file?

    • @TheScotsalan
      @TheScotsalan Před 11 měsíci

      I had this problem the other day. I had a part I had imported from solidworks as a step file, and it dropped a fillet. I ended up having to create a plane on a surface and manually drawing the fillet to do a cut. That worked fine 👍.

    I switched to Fusion 360 that has a free non commercial license, and i could not be happier, because it just works, and do what you want to do, not like freecad that is a nightmare to work with in some cases.

      Good stuff. I have a full solidworks on my PC, but I am still learning freecad. Sure Freecad has a really steep learning curve, but practice practice practice. And, the actual program will only get better👍.
