- something about converting my lawn from green grass to native plants has really made this issue take up A LOT of space in my mind. It's also been this weird feeling that I'm doing what should be so obviously right (in a moral & environmental sense) but so many people around me have looked down on me and made such snide comments about it SO - here's to educating those who have go along with such a problematic standard without even considering the history & the impacts!

this is why grass lawns are problematic and wasteful. Maintaining a pristine lawn demands excessive water, pesticides, and fertilizers, which not only deplete our precious water resources but also contribute to pollution and harm local ecosystems. Grass lawns offer little biodiversity, making them ecological dead zones. It’s time to rethink our love affair with grass lawns and embrace more sustainable landscaping alternatives that support our environment and promote healthier, more resilient communities.

Regarding kids and dogs: both love to play in more diverse landscapes! Children love to explore meadows, prairies, and wooded areas and can use the plants and other species to inspire imaginative play. Think tree-climbing, makeshift shelters, hiding behind rocks, sword-fighting with sticks, turning over downed logs to see the bugs, and so much more. Dogs enjoy exploring and sniffing everything, and the wider range of trees, plants, bugs, birds, and other wildlife the happier they are. Natural spaces are much more exciting than lawns for everyone.
My only fear is that ticks enjoy the long grass 😭 does anyone have any advice to assuage my fear? 😅
@@Rosie-xm7ry If you plan to spend time in tall grass or woods and are afraid of ticks, dress appropriately. Long trousers, full shoes (not sandals), pull socks over your trouser legs. If necessary, use tick repellent. Shower and check your body carefully when you get home. And the clothes go straight to wash after. Ticks can happen anyway, but don't panic. Remove them properly, observe the bite site and if there is a reaction, the doctor will give you an antibiotic and everything will be fine.
@@Rosie-xm7rywhy are u so afraid of ticks ? I am from the area where ticks are extremely dangerous as they carry two dreadful deceases. As long as it is a city area , you are ok. Do you have any statistics that in your area ticks are contaminated ?

Hell yeah, when I was a kid I played in wooded areas, not massive lawns.
After my dad got dementia, we didn’t have the time nor energy to take care of the lawn and our neighbors were more concerned about the yellow lawn than the us the people living in our home…

I just bought a house with a HUGE yard, I noticed 90% of our neighbors in our neighborhood have a very diverse yard, lots of bees and birds and all that beautiful stuff. I love it.

0:22 this is why i get mad when people say that avocado takes up too much water, at least the bess can eat the nectar from avocado, we make oil from its seeds and food from the fruit, monoculture grass is useless,even the deer near where i live like tree leaves better. Heck an avocado tree even gives some sort of shade.
Watching the birds, bugs, butterflies and all the other critters enjoy my wild yard is such a joy. I’m on the anti lawn bandwagon.

I have a 1/4 acre in northern Illinois. Since studying residential food forests, I have reduced my grass lawn by 75%. The 34 fruit trees are lush, beautiful & are providing food.

PEOPLE LIVING IN CALIFORNIA: we have similar legislation protecting us from HOA fines/retaliation for planting native drought tolerant plants. We also have the amazing resource calscape which helps you find native plants for your location, bc California is also a huge state with several biomes in it. Calscape is a database that can help you find native plants for your watering and drainage situation and even has general and care info for each plant AND lists nurseries where you can find them. It’s an amazing tool that everyone in the state should utilize heavily, our native ecosystems need all the care and attention we can give it.

Clearly, Shelby has hit a nerve with this video, and I simply can’t stop commenting. My big problem when I first wanted to plant natives to my Chicago area lawn was to find anywhere to get the plants. A lot of people in the Midwest use prairie moon nursery, where you can order plants and seeds online. It’s important to find nurseries that sell plants native to YOU. (Plenty of Illinois natives won’t survive in Texas, and vice versa.) Once you get to know more people planting natives, you’ll probably find they’ll share plants when they have too many, which happens, or give you cuttings from plants you can root that way. Thanks for listening. I’ll crawl back into my hole now. 😂

Id like to just grow food in a lawn and not bother with useless grass
I'm so so glad to see talk about this, especially in connection to HOAs. It's law in my city that all new homes MUST be a part of an HOA, I want to see more people fight to change this, but people are really attached to property value and the idea that HOAs keep "bad people and things" from happening.
I'm currently growing a bunch of milkweed, black-eyed susans and columbine, both native to my area, that I started from seeds earlier this year. It's still a little too early to plant them in the front yard but I'm very excited for when I actually get to do that. I also picked out some flowers for my parent's house that are pollinator friendly and there's been a lot more bees around there

Just be sure to find the milkweed that is appropriate to your area. It can actually be bad for the butterflies if you plant the wrong type for your region ❤

Our city is in a bit of a water crisis at the moment. One of our water mains broke and is taking several weeks to fix. The whole city is on an outdoor watering ban until the pipe is fixed. Our backyard clover lawn is beautiful and green still, while our front yard which is still grass is not looking so hot. The amount of drinking water that we use for grass is crazy, when clover thrives with just rainfall.

Ahh thank you Shelby! I was the one on Tiktok that said I was confused and this helped sooo much. I think my hoa encourages us to not have lawns. We are only allowed 60% grass in our whole yard. Front yard HAS to be rock. And this is because we live in co and dont have alot of water. We have a hybrid yard. Most is rock, garden and then the rest left is grass. Our chickens loveee “weeds” so much BUT we will get fined if we have “weeds” in front. Also our hoa cost 50$ a year, literally cant imagine the 300$+ ones
I made up the term hybrid because its half good for the environment and half not 😂

i am also VERY anti lawn. But i am also very anti invasive plant. I am fighting bamboo and 2 different invasive groundcovers all from the other side of my fence. Invasive but pretty landscaping plants.
Our yard is half grass, half creeping Charlie, which is an incredibly invasive European plant that is hard to eradicate without herbicides. We’re stumped as to what to do about it. Of course if we don’t tend the grass, the Charlie takes over, and chokes everything out. Ugh.

I'm glad to find your video. You really know what you're talking about. I myself removed all the grass when I moved in. I put in a xeriscape. It's in the suburbs where , when I was moving in, I called it "a sea-of-grass neighborhood." I thought all the neighbors would hate me for doing it. But they didn't. In fact, one day when we were being water restricted because of drought, my neighbor, whose grass lawn was mowed using a riding mower, said to me, "I wish I had your yard now." I was amazed to hear this. I've never had any flack about it. My next-door neighbors bought their house partly because of my xeriscape! They have a very reduced lawn with shrubs and plants instead. I have beautiful flowers growing instead of grass. People walk by and compliment me on my yard., especially in the spring. They drive by and stop and compliment me. They ask if they can take pictures, and of course I say yes. Recently the guest of a neighbor from several states away took pictures to take back to his home state. After many years having the xeriscape, it has all been very positive, nothing negative. All the neighbors love my yard and comment on it all the time.

This video was so well-researched, and I loved how you covered both the science and the cultural history. This would make a great series, if you cover an issue from multiple angles. I still have a small yard with grass because my family plays out there every day, but we have a lot of native perennials growing in our garden, and every time I add a new plant or expand the garden I research it first and choose something native. We also set aside part of our yard for growing veggies, herbs, and fruit. In the last place I lived, one side of the yard was in shade, and moss had naturally grown instead of grass-- it was amazing-- so soft and maintenance-free!

I live in Arizona and lawns are either grass or rocks. One uses precious water and the other creates intense heat. Both are horrible to have here. Then they wonder why its so dang hot compared to cowboy days. Can't stand all these golf courses either. By the time everyone catches on, it will be too late 😢 Great video! ❤

@@Iquey Yes but it takes years for something like saguaro cactus to grow. It takes about 50 to 75 years just to grow one arm. Many are 200 years old which is why fire is devastating to the desert. We do have cacti everywhere 🙂
Thank you for this video! It's definitely needed. People really need to start waking up to how detrimental lawns are, I'm going to share this video with my friends and family. Here in the UK most houses have lawns too, and I know quite a few people who use an excessive amount of weed-killer and pesticide on their lawns. In the UK we've had a massive loss of biodiversity in the past few years and a dramatic drop in the amount of pollinators (mainly due to intensive agriculture and overdevelopment, but I think that lawnmowing and the toxic chemicals that people use on their gardens probably also contributed to that loss, and it wouldn't hurt if all homeowners with gardens could do their bit by allowing native plants to grow in their lawns, and not mowing them) ❤
My husband and I started our native plants garden. We’ve reduced lawn but we live in a traditional neighborhood with an HOA. Rules are to keep impecable lawns. So there you have it! Neighbors raking leaves like crazy, watering like there is no tomorrow to keep green turf in their yards. It is so unnerving. Will we see the White House bragging about their Native pollinator garden? That would set a good example. Thanks for speaking out. We need to make urgen changes ASAP on horrible habits like this.

Yes! So happy to see your spotlight on this topic. I’m in year 4 of my lawn conversion projects. It’s been incredibly rewarding in many ways. So many new pollinators, birds, and just downright beautiful visual interest spotted in my yard. It’s also helped relieve stress and anxiety (and mowing chores). Go at your own pace and don’t feel you have to stretch your budget. In year 3, native plants “leap” in growth, which means you can divide the plant and spread to new areas of your lawn or share with others. I’ve been able to make small hand bouquets to share with neighbors, which starts a conversation of what and why I’m converting lawn. It’s really helped build an army of native plant supporters and gain acceptance from opposing views.
Check your local cooperative extension for what is native/invasive! Most maintain lists, or have people you can contact and ask about it. Its also the best way to get fact based information about plants/ecosystems, instead of weird conflicting information that plagues the internet.
The first year I started not to mow, I had two "kind" neighbors mow the land that abutted each of their properties without bothering to ask me if that's what I wanted. They were the ones that called themselves kind, not me. I'd never presume to do something to a neighbor's house without talking to them first. That's the culture surrounding grass...that they are doing you a favor! For years after, I had anxiety every time I heard a lawn mower and feared I'd have a cop sent to my house because they neighbors couldn't possibly understand. It helped to put up a sign that I got from Wild Seed Project about being a wildlife preserve.
I LOVE how passionately Shelby talks about this stuff. :) Last year I let our backyard grass grow as it pleased for like 5 months (I like in the UK and I have a small-ish backyard that is fenced but right next to our neighbors' house, and they can see our backyard from their windows), and one of our neighbors came to me one time and told me that "we should mow our grass, because otherwise rats will make a nest inside". It sounded like bs a bit, but because I am an anxious person and a people-pleaser I did mow our lawn. I regret it now. I honestly don't think the rats would want to nest at our place anyway because we have two (indoor) cats and there are many outdoors cats walking around our neighborhood. But yeah, what a great video, Shelby!! :) Honestly, who wouldn't want their garden/backyard/lawn to be full of flowers, butterflies and happy chirping birds???
As a non-American I have literally cultural shock. Until now I couldn't imagine that someone could get a fine or go to jail for not mowing the lawn. Disgusting! Thank you for both socio-cultural and environmental aspects. This deeper connection is so much needed in every discussion. I hope we will see on your channel the whole transformation process of your front yard. It would be great inspiration, eventhough everyone have to do own research in their native species ☘💚

I agree with everything you've said! I will continue talking about this with anyone who will listen and create a native plant lawn when I buy a house. But, I wanted to point out the one argument I've heard in favor of lawns that makes sense to me. That is that lawns are a pretty fool proof way to maintain ground cover to prevent soil erosion. You don't have to know that much about plants to maintain a lawn. But I think there are much better solutions obviously and I'm looking forward to a beautiful prairie in my backyard someday!

I used to love hunting for monarchs in the milkweed in the fields around my house as a kid. I had a milkweed pop up in the corner of my yard a couple of years ago and I immediately marked it as a no mow area. It's always covered in bees and butterflies during its blooming season.
2 years ago i changed half my back yard into a wild area, basically just letting whatever was in the lawn grow out...and it was honestly only about 10% grass 😂 i got wild strawberries, asters, goldenrod, st johns wort...it's amazing! Now im working on ripping out the non-native plants and replacing them with native ones im growing from seeds! 😁

My neighbors recently threw a BBQ for everyone on our street and you could see a really clear divide between the millenials & the boomers. All of the millenials were talking about planting natives and all the boomers were obsessive with their grass. So I am joining you in that hope!!

I enjoyed this video. I argue every year with my hubby because he always wants to fertilize the lawn and I do not want any chemicals on our land. He won this year but only the front. I will never allow the back to be touched by chemicals and I will try to convince him next year again to quit treating the front.
I just moved to CO and privileged enough to become a homeowner here, and I began volunteering for a Food Justice org that I later found out fought for bills that a) prevented HOAs from denying xeriscape lawn designs and b) allowed homeowners to have urban gardens in front and back lawns. My front lawn has been converted to natives only and my back yard is currently rewilding itself to prepare for a food forest in the future.
I'm so stoked for this video! Last year I made a dedicated native plot in our back yard and it grew so well that I want to replace our front lawn over the next couple years with all natives 💜
I live in a block of apartments that is surrounded by lawn. I think it would be much better to replant it with native ground covers. Australia is a dry continent and this area is expensive to maintain as has to be watered, we employ a gardening company to mow it and the only use it is a dog toilet ( the dog owners do clean up after the dog).
Just this past weekend, my toddler played in a meadow of native grasses and wildflowers (in Germany). There were many kids running through it, playing games of tag and hide and seek. Meadows can be just as fun for kids as lawns! It's just a different way to play.
I have a 2 year old and a dog. My yard is now made up of native wild Virginia strawberry and some native sedge grasses. I killed all the damn grass and guess what? They run in it and play in it. The children who existed here before the United States were created didn’t have turf grass, they had native grasses.
The only utility I have found for our front lawn is growing melons over it! Fortunately, since Covid, people stopped caring about their lawns so much and now more and more wildflowers are being sown.

My neighbor mows his yard TWICE a week. Once with a riding mower, once with a push mower. (Gas powered.). Waters daily, chemicals all the time.
I’m slowly killing mine, mulching deeply with arborist chips, planting a food forest in most of it, and will be adding a native pollinator garden.

When turning my yard into a native wildlife habitat I started with large garden beds in the front and planted some native plants and then left room for "weeds" to grow. Everything being in the garden bed I was able to avoid the fines from the city. Now I have replaced all the grass with productive plants 😊

Love this! My front lawn is now mostly dandelion - it looks lovely in spring and is full of bees. My back garden is about to get a total overhaul as the landlords are fixing some leaking pipes, so going to take the opportunity to plant native shrubs when the ground has been disturbed and I'm able to get a spade into it. I'm not allowed to put a real pond in, so will be using an old cattle tub instead (I use one as a water trough for my horses so they're winter safe), and putting rocks etc for things to get in and out. My joints aren't looking forward to it, but I can't wait for it to start taking shape.
This makes me feel so good about my property. I live in one those neighborhoods where the residents use roundup constantly. I know I'm only one person with one piece of "lawn" but I try to do everything as naturally as possible. My grass is definitely 60-80% clover, dandelions and other "weeds." Grass struggles anyway because I have so many trees. I hand pull the beds for hours a week and found myself wondering...why are these plants so bad? They flower and look pretty and pollinators are all over them. I do love that in the dead dry heat of summer I'm only one with a green lawn and I never water it. I don't clean up leaves until late spring and use them as mulch. Thank you for your informational videos!

28:04 YES!!! Parks are community resources that are shared by those in single family homes with yards, AND those who don’t have their own outdoor space. And they can be a mix of grass lawns, native gardens, tree groves, etc., so they’re not as resource depleting as lawns.
Since we’ve moved into our house, I’ve talked about how we’re going to convert every square inch of lawn into garden space (plus some permeable pavers and ground cover for hangout areas). So many people are like, but what about your kid? Where will she run and play? Umm, maybe at the 40 acre park that’s two blocks away?

We ditched our lawn which was sprayed and cut to hell and back by the previous owners and planted native plants and fruits and herbs. I'm so happy with our yard now. We get birds and fireflies and butterflies and our son has so much fun playing!
Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is a great resource for all US residents. I'm not in TX but I use it all the time. Some other good resources - Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, BONAP, USDA Plant Database, and your state's local native plant society.
Milkweeds are vital, another great native plant is goldenrod. I'm jealous that you guys in TX have native bluebonnets. Those flowers are GORGEOUS!
I've never understood laws. They're boring, high maintenance, and serve no real purpose.
We never used the front lawn so I have turned most of it into garden. That garden is mostly Australian natives and some dwarf fruit trees. I will probably end up digging the rest of that front lawn up and putting more garden too. I am also slowly extending my back garden from just around the edges to the middle. I don't use weed killers or fertiliser or water the lawn that is there either. The only weed I remove one by one is Bindis 😬 they hurt.
Ooh I am ao excited for this video. I love Kyle's Native Habitat videos. I've been slowly changing my flowers beds and lawn to more native plants and food. I have planted over 10 different perennial fruits, asparagus, strawberry, raspberries and more. I grew butterfly milkweed from seeds and this is the first uear its bloomed 🥰. So worth it! My husband doesnt mind thst the yard is shrinking down too.

I really enjoyed your video! I became aware of the lawn effect on native pollinators, birds, etc this past year and have started incorporated more native plants. I have big plans for the fall, as most of the native plants I think will do well for my small yard, the seeds should be cold stratified. I have already planted a butterfly milkweed, calico beardtongue, coneflowers, and blanket flowers. Although, to your weed comment, some weeds are weeds in that they are also invasive species. What typically is dropped in my yards from birds (or squirrels) are trees, which my yard is too small to support any more trees.
I also found the information on soil temperature that you discussed very interesting. I knew temperatures in cities were higher due to less green space and more asphalt and concrete, but I never considered grass lawns contributes to that as well.
Love this! Started bumble bee gardening 7 years ago in back yard. Amazing how many other insects I have encountered. Devising a plan in my head for the front yard.
If you have to keep your lawn short, there are native ground cover alternatives like clover. We just make sure our clover isn’t mowed so frequently that it can’t flower and the bees love our backyard

God I love it when I meet people who hate grass lawns like I do. and the thing is you can have grass lawns especially if your area is known for its tall grasses. But that’s the thing it’s TALL grasses that provide an ecosystem for bugs and snails and slugs. even grass is important but not the mainstream type of grass lawns. I live in the midwest we have plains and plains of grass but it’s tall and makes up a part of the ecosystem for nature to use. modern grass lawns are awful and I hate them especially the spots that are like a small triangle of grass AHHHH just plant some flowers that are native to your area put a bush there something that doesn’t need to be “cut” every week

I love the Homegrown National Park website for a good overview of what’s native where, and it’s a cool community of people contributing in their own small way to increasing biodiversity and together making a big difference. If I had any outdoor space of my own I would definitely have a native plant garden.

Yes! There are a million better uses for the land than lawns. I know here in California lawns have become less popular because of the water usage, but there are still way too many of them around.
I live in Northern Cali and it is so wonderful seeing so many homes near me with only native plants instead of grass lawns! Coming from the Midwest originally, I never realized how unnatural and terrible lawns can be - not to mention just time consuming and annoying for home owners. All aboard the lawn-hating train!

Using a second hand paper shredder has been the best thing for my plants/ year 3 of working on a pollinator garden, I shred cardboard mail and such, and I find that with these unnaturally hot temps, it keeps my plants happy with with using less water! Worms friends also love it.
My husband will tease me by saying “I’m thinking about buying grass seed” and then we both crack up, in areas of our “yard” that arent planned out yet we just throw all the cone flower and extra garden seeds! The butterflies love it
