    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    This screen adaptation of the stage musical of the same name finds the Roman slave Pseudolus (Zero Mostel) scheming his way to freedom by playing matchmaker for his master's son, Hero, who is smitten with the blonde and beautiful Philia. However, things don't go at all according to plan. The complications that ensue involve blackmail, funny disguises and long-lost children, while Pseudolus desperately tries to keep up with his end of the bargain.

    Something interesting is that this is probably the most accurate depiction of the life in Ancient Rome. It was wild, noisy, restless, full of sales, and most importantly colorful

      @@jits8767 Just a consequence of 1966 filmmaking. The very foundation of Rome's portrayal and the research done in support were fantastic and are still played today globally with many races and ethnicities playing the parts.

    RIP Sondheim! This is a terrific tune. Surprising that the staging of it here is so clunky, though I like the way Lester is filming Roman streetlife in a verite style.

      Larry Gelbert (MASH TV Show, among others) helped write the book of the original play. When interviewed about his career, he was asked about this film, and said very disparagingly, "I could have lived without that being done." The musical is very funny, much more fun than the filmed version. Was revived a few years ago on Broadway.

    Superior comedy. Best line: "Was one a year" when Zero was checking out a wine. Last role for Buster Keaton. Wish Zero could have starred in the film "Fiddler on the Roof" that he played on Broadway. Zero's greatest movie, IMHO, was the 1968 The Producers.

      This song MADE the musical. The original script didn't have it. The opening of the show wasn't going well. When they change the line up and added Comedy Tonight at the beginning, it became a raging success.

    I'm not sure if this is right, but this beginning scene feels like it really draws from how it must have been for the Romans. Like I can kinda imagine some chorus like this being performed in front of the public 2,000 years ago. Would be really cool to travel back in time and see how this really went down

      That was the idea. They wanted to write a comedy like those that the great Roman playwrights would have. I'd say they succeeded.

      I wish I could too.
      I know they didn't sing/speak in English back then, but some things about the performance style were likely similar.
      The tradition of having 3 different buildings/houses in the stage set is a real Roman tradition and was also used in Shakespeare's A Comedy of Errors which is based on/inspired by some of the same traditions.
      Forum is based on ancient Roman plays with plots similar to Forum (but I don't think they ever had all of this all in one play before until Forum came along!).
      Plays where father takes son to brothel for the first time were apparently fairly common in Rome. And there would be several male characters of different ages including an old man named Senex, which really just means, old man. ^___^

      @Howard KornblumThe entire plot of the movie was basically lifted from 3 or 4 of Titus Maccius Plautus early Roman comedic plays and put together. The comedy was basically written a couple of thousand years ago and still holds up over two thousand years later

    Honestly it's beyond me how most people involved with the stage play seem to think the movie is so bad. It's really not *that* bad.
    I ended up far preferring the stage play of Brigadoon to the movie but still like the movie of it anyway.
    We all have our own favorites. Live and let live. ^____^
    Either way, I think we are all agreed that neither the play nor the movie would ever have been anything like as good without this song. ^____^

      @@judehutchinson8355 I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or disagreeing with me. I think the basic problem is that the purpose of the song is to indicate that we're about to see A PLAY. It's explicitly asking us to suspend our disbelief regarding the nonsense to come. This opening does the exact opposite. It emphasizes that we're really in Rome and that these events could really take place. "Henry V" does the same thing. Laurence Olivier handled that movie right.
