Practically is one of Martin's core personality traits. He stashes extra fire extinguishers and thinks about the best way to remove supernatural parasites (corkscrew). Brings tea and constantly tries to get Jon to get more sleep or go home.

Incredibly strong for Martin to willingly put himself through literal psychological torture for the sake of their plan. He used himself as bait, the poor guy.
really digging how jon and elias manifest their powers....jon uses it to gain knowledge vs. elias uses it to inflict knowledge. jon presents a question and absorbs people's confession of their deepest fear/secret/trauma or whatever it is jon wants from them. elias, who already has this knowledge, seems to regurgitate it back to people to fulfill his bidding. more than narrative foils, which i mean, is easily assumable because elias can just be so rightfully evil...they're like. two sides to one coin. it's why elias can be so transparent and jon...not. and why elias sees jon's "becoming" as something promising. bc he doesn't use his powers to hurt but to...reprieve/comfort?? i could be wrong ofc i still have to catch up but it. makes me think.
Actually to further that, many statement givers say that giving a statement makes them feel good. Rember Elias describing it as a tingling sensation that's pleasent

Don't have enough understanding of that kind of psychology to know how horrifying Martin's mother saw him as besides being a copy of his dad, what's the deal?
I knew that his mom is what elias would use against him but I genuinely thought they had a decent relationship given how martin writes letters to her :(

i don't think it was meant to read THAT dark! rusty quill is pretty explicit about wanting to keep sexual violence out of their work, and it's sadly pretty common for people to abandon spouses who develop illnesses that require a lot of supportive care. martin's mom resenting him for growing up to look like his dad even as he puts everything into caring for her is petty and misplaced and damaging to both herself and her son, but it's a pretty human reaction. and to someone else, it COULD be a huge relief to find out that a parent's distain is rooted in something entirely out of your control and is completely their own issue! but for martin, Knowing how much and why his mom hates him is such a devastating blow because there's nothing he can do to fix or change her perception, and the sacrifices that he's made for her, the care he's given, the love he's shown her were never going to be enough.
Sometimes when a relationship ends really badly, or just at all and the person left behind isn't in a good mental state, they project all that frustration onto whatever is most convenient. For Mrs. Blackwood, it was Martin because he was close, he gave her the care her husband never did, but he looked like the man that betrayed her. Seeing him probably kept reminding her that her husband wasn't there anymore, and she still hated him for it, so she hated Martin for reminding her of it. He kept trying to be a good son because he probably thought that if he figured out what the "right" thing to do was, she'd start loving him.
Ok, so we all agree that Elias will always go for the lowest blow. And when talking about Martin's feelings for Jon the most hurtful thing Elias could say would probably be that Jon will never love him back, BUT he didn't say that! So anyways, these idiots will be in a slow burn until the end of time.

You are wonderful Martin, a shining light in a pitch-black pit. And do you know what's best? There is nothing behind it. You are the kind person, YOU are the optimistic goof we all love, YOU and only you, are what keeps our hopes up. There's no entity behind what you do, there's no patron that feeds of the happiness you cause, it's just you. and that's what's good. Its something all of us loves you for. Here, it's not tea, just a hot cup of chocolate with marshmallows, but I'm sure it will bring you delight. You deserve it.

You've got this composed, charismatic omniscient asshole who's chiller than alaska, of course, OF COURSE his one true opposite isnt jon, its Chaotic Good "I have a corkscrew and an unrequited crush on my boss" Martin. God, i love these two and i need more. Preferably some moment of vindication for martin, but arson and "theres a door in the way :)" must have riled him up more than any unknowing ever had.

Love how Elias' go to when dealing with unruly employees is to give them a dark revelation about their parents.
At this point I think he'd actually LIKE to fire Martin. But as much as Elias is an avatar of the Eye, he's not what binds the employees to the Institute. Elias has to tolerate it, to an extent.

The baseline fear plus the joy from the confirmation about Martin's feelings plus horror of hearing him being tortured plus the emotion of Tim and jon interacting plus the adrenaline and dread and anticipation and oh god the human heart wasn't made to handle so many emotions at once !!!
Rewatching now, and I *just* realized that all three of the statements are recorded, Martin isn't destroying knowledge, he is just removing one copy of information. The tapes still (presumably) exist for those four statements (MAG 008, MAG 035, MAG 103, MAG 86)
My friend keeps saying I'm going to warm up to Elias, but literally every time I hear anything about him it always makes me want to scoop his eyes out with a spoon even more.

I have never cried while listening to this podcast but... here we are. Martin's past, his experiences triggered something inside me. As soon as Elias did whatever he did to Martin, I burst out crying like a crazy person. Also, does Martin become a part of the Lonely or something like that? Because I feel like he does. After listening to this ep at least.

I've heard this show touches on everyone's fear, no matter how obscure. But even though it's technically covered mine, this show has never really scared me until that last scene. The thumping of the circus music building up while you get to imagine just what exactly the characters are seeing... yeah, that's getting there. I'm very excited for the next episode.
