Love how punk this is. Rivers had a lot of aggression in his voice on this demo. Kinda wish some parts of this translated to the record. Not disappointed with how it turned out obviously; classic record, but goddamn if these demos aren't heavy as hell.
Rivers was really keen on making Blue a pop rock / power pop album, hence the lack of some of the rawer parts we hear on the demo. IIRC they once caught Rivers in the studio shredding, but he stopped abruptly when he realized people were watching.

I love how raw, energetic and punk-er some of these cuts sound compared to the album versions - especially how much more aggressively Rivers sings - but I think listening to this also makes me appreciate so much more how Ric Ocasek helped them improve these tracks and make them into the timeless classics that we know and love. Rest in Peace, man.

It so funny to hear a band that sounds so tight now have trouble maintaining a steady beat or being sloppy during transitions, but the technique and song-writing was always super strong.

@Cuss Blackstone The tempos are absolutely wavering in this demo and there are plenty of transitions that aren't as clean as the record (especially when it comes to maintaining tempo). Which is fine, that's to be expected from a demo. Also, if your drummers last priority is to play what the song needs you need to find a new drummer. Just saying.

@@drummerdude476 I'm very familiar with triple meter. Compared to the final versions of these songs, there are sections that rush and feel loosely thought out. I can't really explain it better than that. So like, there's nothing "wrong" with the way everyone is playing in this, you can just hear how they decided to change it and polish it making everything more seamless. Little things like that can make all the difference when making a hit song. Hopefully that makes sense.

Great bands have an insane sense of self-identity from the beginning it seems. I remember stumbling across video of the first Franz Ferdinand gig at some art show. Although the songs are raw, they are just as fucking catchy.
I kinda disagree. I always find the Blue demos to be very uncanny because they’re Weezer songs but… they just lack all the iconic things that make Weezer Weezer, most notably Rivers’s nerdy vocals and the iconic Blue guitar tone.
Weezer with St. Anger snare? This can't be!
It's clear how much of the "weezer sound" on the Blue Album we owe to Matt Sharp. He's definitely underappreciated.

I love Say it ain’t so in this. It’s a bit faster, the bass line is way more complex and pronounced, and the snare almost sounds like a tom which really benefits the song.
And that solo godDAMN Rivers

I like the Say It Ain't So but imo I don't like the distortion on the parts that are supposed to sound calmer. I like the contrast in the final song.

The bass line is the same as it is in the studio version it's just harder to hear all the subtle bass stuff in the final version

Not only charm, but a lot of the little tricks and hooks I would have assumed were a result of the producer being like "OK, here's the smart stuff" are already evident here
thats really the whole point of a demo. its not really meant to sound good its just to get the ideas down first like a rough draft. i think for that it does a pretty good job.

facts I love when they let that super dissonant chord ring out for undone especially in their live videos in the 90s, I even tend to do that whenever I play with my band.
I could feel what kind of nuance they wanted to put into the songs at first. It's a great experience for the people who love WEEZER, isn't it?

Woah the solo on Say It Ain't So is much different on this one. It sounds more complex, but the album version feels more passionate and is definitely way more iconic.

Different guitarist. This is Jason Cropper- he started Chopper One after Rivers kicked him out the band.
Both versions aren't that hard to be honest this version is just more based around the pentatonic/blues scale plus rivers played both versions since cropper used to mostly be on acoustic until the switched him to electric right before the album
The solo on the album fits the song more. It's simple and passionate, as it should be.

Just got to Say It Ain’t So and Damn I love this version, the silly falsetto backing vocals and the heys are killing me. The punk accent on “life taker” works too. I imagine this is how they sounded live.

Undone (The Sweater Song) demo is killer production quality.
Wow, I actually LOVE the Buddy Holly demo.. It's fascinating to hear how many of the little details Rivers already had figured out in the demo phase. Speaks volumes as to how talented of a songwriter he is, even with very primitive audio production tools / techniques at his disposal, he was still able to carve out room for all of the seemingly minor additions that make Weezer stand out from every other guitar-based radio rock band from that period. The rich character of all the songs is still here.

The World Has Turned is great in demo form. Much more of a bittersweet ballad here.
The drum rhythm at the start of TWHTALMH really has so much more impact from that slight offset in the final version.

Ironically, I’ve been to over a thousand shows and Weezer back in ‘95 in Cincy was arguably the tightest sound I’ve witnessed. My son fronts/songwriters for T.Cemetery and I witness him working through the stages of song creation and let me tell ya’ from “farm to table” there is quite a huge metamorphosis goin’ on w/ each composition,
