Street Photography in NYC - Fuji 23mm and 35mm

- What is the best lens for street photography? Well - there is no truly best lens, but the most traditional focal lengths for street photography are the standard 35mm or 50mm lenses (23mm/ 35mm on APS-C sensors).
Today I spend time on the streets of Times Square, NYC using the Fuji 23mm f1.4 (35mm equivalent) and the Fuji 35mm f2 (50mm equivalent). I discuss which focal length I prefer for my style of photography and which focal length I'd recommend if you could only have one.

Thanks for watching! Let me know which focal length is your favorite down here!
Which preset is this?
Very nice photo's of NYC!
When I go out and know that I will be walking down narrow street's crammed with people, I really like to use my Nikkor 24mm-70mm f/2.8 lens. I might lose a little bit of sharpness, but I am not necessarily looking for over sharp photo's. I like the versatility that the zoom offer's, and I find myself naturally choosing either 35mm or 50mm. If I know that I will have plenty of elbow room, or able to where I want to be through footwork, I do prefer my 35 mm prime.
Subbed to your channel, you have talent, you need to "get there." 1K ;)
@@Webtrekker1 Thank you for the feedback! The 24-70 is always a go to. I find it too big for my own use on the street, but when shooting landscapes or portraits I love a nice versatile zoom.
@@mib8015 I make my own presets that I use to keep my edits similar across photos!
Jason Webber are they available?
Love this style of videos!
Great video Jason and nice shots! I don't shoot Fuji, but I keep seeing a lot pics and videos in my feeds and results are really nice. I might have to check them out.
Broooo super good format. Great work 👍🏼
Loving your feed, Jason. Thanks for sharing your insightful ideas. More power to you and your channel.
Allen Leonard Fernandez thank you Allen!
Great video. You must have gotten out there right before lockdown. Perfect timing, I'm trying to decide between 18-23-35. Right now, I can only get one, but I agree, between the two you compared, it's the 23. Love your work! Keep it up.
Really cool video and really good shots! I started off with the 35mmf2, and recently purchased the 56 1.2 which I use for street too- that lens is magic! But I do love my 35 too :)
Awesome setup. I need to get my hands on that 56mm
Dude your content is fire 🔥 just watched all your videos because I'm thinking in buy me the exact same setup with the x-t2 and the 35mm
Aye thank you! 100% recommend that setup. I absolutely love it.
Great comparison, thank you! Lovely photos you really have mastery over the 35mm!
This is nice and useful compare review!
Great video man!! 🤙🏾
Thanks for watchin!
Great comparison, thanks!
i dont have a 35mm instead im using a 18-55 kitlens. When im into street photography I'll just adjust it to 23 or 35mm.
I like that strategy. The 18-55 is an unreal lens. It was the only lens I used for almost two years
@@JasonWebberYT unreal lens means? you do not like it? at 35mm the aperture must not be around 3.2 in this lens which is good for street.
I'm just using the kit lens 15-45mm , so which one should I buy : 23mmf2 or 35mmf2 ? Thanks for your advice
when i'm out doing street photography i hardly ever use the 35mm f2 the two lenses i use all the time are the 16mm f1.4 and the 23mm f2 with the fujifilm X-T30
Excellent info. Just what I wanted.
Thanks for watching!
I have debating between the 2 for ages but after watching your video I think you made my mind up and that the 23 is the one for me...Thank you
I love how you kept patience and got that taxi shot. It has such magnetism. wow shot
I personally prefer 35mm for full frame, which is 23 mm on a crop sensor! like you said, it is very versatile all-around lens!
And you can still get nice portraits with this focal length almost without distortion.
I love 23mm on the Fuji. When i bought my X-T2 the first lens I got was the 23mm f2. Almost never came off my camera for over a year
hey man, great vid. really enjoyed the B-Roll too. was that all in Eterna profile, or did you F-Log and then grade it? Either way, nice job and keep it up!! :D
Thanks! I actually shoot all my video on a Lumix G9 ... I really like having the flipout screen for vlogging purposes. I usually don't color grade at all, but every once in a while I apply a LUT during my b-roll sequences
I was standing on a sidewalk composing a shot of a storefront with my 35mm. I had to almost get on the street and still couldn't compose how I wanted. Swapped it out with 18-55 and set it to 24mm. Got my shot. No lens is perfect. I guess it depends on the scene.
agree
I know it's a long time ago that you made this video but I love the colors here. I must try to make a preset for colors like that for my Fuji.
Thanks Michael! I appreciate it.
Hi Jason Lovely video can you let me know what edits you did in the taxi pic rather all you pics and which tool u used. i am new to photography so asking guidance.
Hey Jason, great video with great photos, and I really dig the editing. The colors really pop (which I'm a huge fan of currently) One question though, what bag was that at 3:28? Peak Design sling or messenger? If it's the sling, how well does it fit the XT2 with these lenses? I'm shooting an XH1 with the 35mm F2 (bought it a month ago, love that camera so much) and I'm looking at both the 23mm F2 (I shot that focal length previously with my X100S) and the Peak Design Sling 5L or 10L to take on street shoots. Let me know what you think.
It was the Peak Design Messenger! I have the small version and it fits plenty of gear. Fits both my X-T2 and G9 with an extra lens or 2.
I also have the 5L sling. You can probably fit the X-H1 and one extra lens in there as long as they're smaller primes. I love both those bags. If I didn't have so many different cameras id love to use the 5L exclusively. It's a great bag.
@@JasonWebberYT thanks for getting back. I'm prone to overpack (analog cameras, XH1, X100S, sometimes even a laptop), I might just get the messenger and be settled hahaha
Prob the best bet 👌🏻
Hi Jason. It is indeed a difficult decision and as we're not all made of money we can't always have both. But, as most of us have the 18-55mm "kit" lens can I suggest spending a couple of hours with this set at each of the two focal lengths? It'll take a fair bit of self control not to move the zoom during each of these sessions - might be worth sticking a bit of tape over the zoom ring (and you can only really get an approximate setting) but I think it's a worthwhile experiment before we part with our cash and buy the prime. Also worthy of note is the Viltrox 23mm and 33mm version of each lens?
35mm on cropped sensor is also my favorite. Anything wider than that I tend to struggle with (for street at least).
Agreed! Shot all last weekend in NYC with a 28mm (full frame). Way too wide for my preference on the street
Awesome video! What type/brand of lens hood are you using on your 35mm f2
thank you! just the stock fuji lens hood on the 35mm f2. The 23mm has a third party metal hood that I bought on ebay
Wow! It's a nice color!
Awesome content!
Thank you!
I just purchased the new 23 1.4 wr to take on vacation and was hoping it was good enough to be able to crop into a sudo 33 ;) . If you know what I mean :) great video and thank you very much for the inspiration
Nice shots. I personally like the traffic enforcer picture. Can I ask which editing software did you use?
Robbie thank you! All edited in Lightroom!
Absolutely love the city shot with the amazing light!!! Regarding your comment at the start about the preferences, I couldn't agree more. I started out with the X100 series and I got comfortable with the 23mm focal length. With the X-Pro 2, I got the 35mm F2 and it took a while to get used to it. I ended up using it so much that I purchased the 35mm 1.4 and that thing is permanently attached to the body.
Haha that's awesome. I used to hate the 50mm equivalent focal length. I always just thought it was a bit too tight for anything I wanted to shoot. I think the natural progression for a lot of photographers is to become more "detail oriented" and to want to isolate their subject a bit more, which the slightly longer 35mm definitely helps to do. I'm the exact same way.. have barely used the 23mm since buying my 35 and I now use that focal length almost exclusively on all my film cameras too.
@@JasonWebberYT why barely used 23mm. For streets wide coverage and showing details is not important? why you carry 35mm more?
Hey jason, l just discover your channel. I just solt my canon 5dmark lll and l have doubt if l can get the good image quality at fuji ststem. But your images are insane and also edits. I will get the xt30 with 35mm
Question: ✋ if i have the 23mm as my first and would want a second prime for portraits, should i go for 35 or 56?
If you know it's for portraits, go with the 50. Thats an amazing lens, the compression and out of focus backgrounds are great for portraits. I use the 35 as more of a do everything lens, i can use it for portraits if need be but I can also use it for street
Hey man love your video! What messenger back is that?
Brian Reubelt thank you! Peak Design Everyday Messenger
Did you crop the photo with the taxi or did you really stand that near to the taxi? Just asking, because I want to decide between the 23mm and the 35mm lense.
Very minimal cropping on that one
thanks love from India, please make a video on 27mm f2 .
I really like the way 23mm captured portraits also the 35 mm gave good depth of field
Awesome work...the taxi with the flag probably would've came out better with the 23mm though IMO. I feel like I needed to see more. Thanks for making this video though...I'm about to trade in my Sony A99 with the X-t2 and 23mm..this solidified my choice.
Thanks Paolo!
These are beautiful photos!! Did you edit them or are they straight out of camera?
All edited in Lightroom!
@@JasonWebberYT Do you have any presets!
What extended grip are you using for your Fuji?
It's the metal hand grip made by Fuji for the X-T2!
the 50mm f2 for portraits is awesome!
I'll have to try that lens at some point!
Hi. Would you say the 35mm f2 is good for stationary car shoots? Thanks
I currently have the X-T3 and the 18-55mm f2.8-4. Want something with good background blur for potraits and car pics (mostly my own car)
Cool video. What aspect ratio do you normally use? Thanks. Keep on shooting.
Thanks! I prefer to shoot in 3:2 aspect
Jason Webber Thank you for the information, appreciate it. Stay safe and keep well. Cheers!
Looking for a recommendation for my next Fuji lens. Currently using the kit 18-55mm. Looking at the 23mm f2 or the 35mm f2. Any taughts?.
I’d personally go with the 35mm if you already have the kit lens. It’ll give you more/better bokeh than the 23mm and i overall just prefer that focal length. The kit lens you have already has a solid F2.8 aperture at 18mm, which is very close to 23mm. That’s the main reason why I’d say go 35, just to have a faster aperture at a little bit of a different focal length 👍
Jason Webber 👍
Cool bro...I want to get me one of these lenses so bad for street photo ..just not sure which one.
Both super solid lenses. I personally prefer the 35
Lovely comparison between the two focal lengths on its practicality and real-life usage. I personally have the 35mm f2 as well, and I have it on my camera all the time. There's less to worry with the 35 in regards to composition, so it makes it a very enjoyable to use. But when it comes to architecture and landscapes, 14mm is my choice.
Thank you! Totally agreed on the 35mm. I've never actually used the 14mm, but I've heard it's a great lens. Might have to rent it this Summer and give it a try for some landscapes
What is the bag that you show at minutes 3:32? Thanks
Alain F. Peak Design Everyday Messenger v1!
Any taught about the difference between the 35mm f2 or the 35mm f1.4?
I always chose the F2 because of the weather sealing. I’ve only ever used the 35 1.4 very briefly. If I shot a ton of portraits, I’d probably go with the 1.4
Are those photos straight out of camera?
I am wondering which lens is more suitable for shooting CZcams video? (At home)
I think I responded to your insta message earlier 👍👍
@@JasonWebberYT Yes thank you a lot man!
Your last shot is a keeper! Important factor you didn't mention why the shot really works, the person is wearing stripes. It completes the shot.
I should've mentioned that for sure - but thank you for mentioning it for me!
What was the intro broll shot with?
Panasonic G9!
Hello Jason , again great video , thank you for sharing ... Now , I have another question for you ... About 23mm F1.4 or F2.0 and the 10-24 mm F/4 lens .Which would you recommend ??? And why .Thank you.
23mm f2.0 vs f1.4 ... Depends on what you value - if you want to have the fastest possible autofocus and also want weather sealing, get the 2.0... If you want as much bokeh as possible and don't mind a bigger, slower autofocusing lens, get the 1.4.
The 10-24 is a totally different beast. I really like that lens, but the f/4 aperture doesn't allow for much of any bokeh and it's low light performance isn't nearly as good as the other two lenses mentioned above. Depends on what you shoot - if you're shooting on the streets or shooting portraits, one of the 23's will be best for you. If you shoot a lot of ultra-wide landscapes and architecture, the 10-24 will be best for you.
If you can't make up your mind but have the budget, buy the Rokinon 12mm f2 and one of the 23mm's! That's what I did for years until I sold the 12mm. I loved that lens. Nice and inexpensive.
And also thank you for watching again :)
I think a lot of photos would've turned out better if you took people head on , for example there were people passing by the car at the crossing , I'd take them in it. But the reflection of the lines in the taxiwindow is pretty dope be it in colour
how to get your setting
What song in the intro? Cool vid keep it up!
Can't remember the exact name but I get all my music from epidemic sound!
For me the 16mm 1.4 and 35 f2
Awesome images and beautiful deep color grading! You should make more tutorials because we all want to know how you do it ;-)
You are very talented.
As always, enjoyed watching your content!
I'll definitely be making more editing tutorials in the future. As always thank you for watching!
Yes! It is..what filter are you using? Thanks in advance.
Always shoot your vlog in the bathroom, best possible audio. - loved the video.
i ilke your color,., you sell it on preset ?
Thank you! I don't sell it unfortunately
The xt3 or 4 photos are always to dark for me compred to sony a6600.. I dont know why! is the sony a6600 better for photography!?
If you want to link and do street photography lemme know! Fujigang

🔥🔥🔥
This is totally unrelated but first second/first scene of this video: I saw BTS logo... and got so excited...
The 23
Fuji f1.4 lenses are not good for video because of motor.
Agree and disagree. The 23 1.4 and 16 1.4 have the clutch focus mechanism which is way better for manual focus when compared to the f2 versions.
I find that their autofocus in video is quite accurate, however yes, the motors do make quite a bit of noise when grabbing focus. If you're recording autofocus video and need the audio straight from the camera then they're a no-go. Besides that, I think they kick ass
Also the 35 f2 has terrible breathing so that rules out autofocus on that too. Very disappointing actually because the eye tracking in the xt3 is pretty bang on. Very tempted to give the 1.4 a go and hope the motor noise isn’t too bad unless it changes focus a long way.
How come you don't shoot anyone from the front all your shots are the back of there head's 🤔
I usually don't like people to be recognizable in my photos.. that's primarily the reason - but also partially because I'm definitely not the world's best street photog! Working to get better 👌🏻
@@JasonWebberYT Keep it up you'll over come your fear of shooting straight at your subject and you will be amazed at the photos you can get when you capture expressions and emotions. You already produce good videos and I'm sure that didn't happen overnight. I'm looking forward to seeing how your street photography evolves .
Another tip: don't put all subjects in the middle of your pics, it makes the composition less interesting. Try to experiment with hip shooting without looking at your viewfinder.
Gud
You had me engaged up until the point you said that you edited the shots... from then on IT IS NOT an original result of the lenses used. Soooo why even bother to compare lense performance (other than the obvious difference in focal length? ) if you will edit the originals? thanks anyway.
Reb C hmm interesting I've never gotten that feedback before... Only edits made were to color and exposure. No wild Photoshop adjustments or anything.
I don't think it would make much difference if the shots were color corrected/graded or not considering both are fujinon lenses - meaning both lenses would most likely capture similar colors.
I think the video is meant to highlight the use cases of the different focal lengths used. This is clearly not a video that tries to pixel peep or photograph brick walls to show marginal differences in sharpness. Imo street photography rarely needs optically perfect glass to produce good photos.
Great video. But not very impressed with photographs you took. I get it it's a lens comparison, but a little effort for some dope shots would have made it much better.
The images can be improved.
Meh, wouldn't really call this street photography. All backs of peoples' heads, or just objects/scenery. Good shots, but not really all that interesting.
Thanks for watching John!
That’s just the trend of street photography these days. And in 10-20 years it will change yet again. There is really no need to start putting minuscule parameters on the genre like “must include face.” Saul Leiter has plenty of abstract reflection street photos where you barely even make out the person in frame, so was Leiter not a good street photographer? This is one of many sub genres of street that have emerged over the course of a century. 👍🏻
buddyWalrus that’s a very good point.
You have very bad taste in music while having great taste in photography.
eminakben hahaha well... Thank you! 😂
For my Fujifilm XT3 & XT5 the 23 & 35 f 2 are great compact companion lens,you can get both for the price of a f1.4 lens.
