White-throated Sparrow: Whistler of the North

  • Perhaps of the most beautiful sparrow song of all is that of the White-throated Sparrow, a handsome species that breeds in northern areas where spruce and fir trees abound. The song of the male is simple yet elegant. It is composed of clear, pure whistles. There is usually a noticeable pitch change at the beginning of each song (after the first or second note) and most songs end with two or three triplets-whistles that are composed of three obvious pulses.
Individual males sing only one stereotyped song pattern, and neighboring males may sing noticeably different songs. The cadence of one common song pattern is revealed by two popular memory phrases: My Sweet, Canada, Canada, Canada and Old Sam Peabody, Peabody, Peabody.
The video footage was gathered in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The setting was an open parkland dotted with patches of Balsam Fir and Black Spruce.

Many years ago, my wilderness loving husband pointed out that this beautiful call, heard in the large city we live in, was compliments of a white-throated sparrow. He passed away 4 years ago, and with him went many other things I loved, like wilderness camping, canoeing, kayaking, sitting around a campfire . . . But every spring the first white-throated sparrow call I hear tugs at my heart strings and reminds me of all the ways he enriched my life. The first one, and every one thereafter.

The "new" song pattern (with doublets at the ending, rather than triplets) is working its way down from Canada, but I don't think it has yet taken over in regions such as the Adirondacks. Note that there has always been variations between individuals and I have many examples of odd songs in my recording collection. In fact, even while I was recording in the 90s, I had trouble finding solid examples of the "classic" pattern.

I have these birds in my backyard in NJ, and was happy to identify which they were by their sweet song.

Hearing these guys a lot this spring and saw quite a few at my feeders this winter too. I've also been noticing a lot more cardinals.

One flew into my window today. We kept him in a bird cage, and he stayed for 4 hours. When he got more active, I opened the door. He flew to some shrubs near my house... I hope he recovers. I tried to stay out there to see if he would fly higher. In the end, I left it to God. He sure was cute.

One of our favorite things about winter in southeast Texas is having these guys visit for a few months. Their songs out in the distant trees is so delightful. Rarely do we get a glimpse without binoculars and a keen ear. Great footage.

Noisy critters when you are camping and they are up at 430am.

When I was young, I used to get angry because it would always wake me up. Now that I am old, I get angry because it puts me to sleep.

Finally, I found out which cute little bird I was hearing early in the morning near my house, here in Illinois! I actually managed to catch a glimpse of one as I biked past the small tree it sat in. wasn't able to see it well enough, but I at least knew to research songs/calls of small birds. I spent the past 2(?) hours using the website for my village's bird habitat to narrow down the species.

Saw a large group of them rummaging through the leaf litter in Prospect Park, Brooklyn today. I could swear they were saying "what are you lookin' at?".

Great I found this video. I've been hearing this guy 24/7. For some reason I can picture a cartoon bird wearing a top hat and swinging his cane as he whistles this song as we walks down the street. lol
