Adding Loose Figures to your Abstract Painting, Part Two
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
In this BobBlast I show you some fun exercises I will do as part of a short Landscape Workshop at the upcoming Trade Shows - Artisan Expo and Art of the Carolinas. The links are below.
The theme for this series of BobBlasts is all about FIGURES... How to quickly suggest the figure in your painting. In the previous BobBlast, we created loose "carrot people" to suggest crowds in a landscape. In this week's BobBlast - Part Two, I show you how I place the suggestion of figures in my abstract paintings.
It's not just the demonstration of HOW I put my carrot people in my pure abstract, loose paintings - it's the WHY I like to add figures. They add heightened clarity to the storyline. I have found that including simple, loose figures while working on the abstract painting, I can paint with a focused goal of how I want the visual statement to look.
To keep me focused, I work in a series - a titled series - like Magic Circus or Lounge Ladies & Their Magic Rabbits. So, as I plan my series, I title the paintings first, again to keep my focus. The painting is done when it clearly resembles the title. That is how I work most effectively and creatively. If my painting is meaningless and has no title or theme, it will be unclear without a strong point of view.
To me, a pointless batch of colors splashed about might be pretty, but will have an empty impact. I always say - A good painting has a loud voice!
Paint loudly - add a figure! It adds life to your work.
Dear Bob, please NEVER STOP doing the videos! can't live without them! you are fantastic!!!!
You are very inspiring.
You inspire me so much! Make painting fun again. Would love to attend one of your workshops!
Makes me want to get out my acrylic paints and play again with colors! I used your idea of carrot people on my watercolors with a ink pen and it works!!! Thanks for that great tip!
So glad I discovered your channel. You appear to be having a Blast,Bob. 😀

Enjoyed seeing both parts of the process. Very interesting and fun!
Thank you Bob for all the effort you go to in order to share your process with us. I love just watching you paint. It really brings up my mood when I am feeling stress. You have so much talent pouring through your hand. Wonderful to watch. XOXO
Interesting take on adding figures into abstract paintings. Definitely adds depth to the background as you say with scale comparison. Nice how you walk the viewer through your process, so they are right there with you. Thanks for sharing Robert!
God bless you, Bob! 🍻
Very pleased to see him every time.I see a life artist/actor in him besides an colour artist.Besides he's a good teacher

Wonderful. Watching in 2020 in UK. Suffering with depression so Thankyou Bob
Your videos are so inspiring, especially when I get stuck overthinking a painting. Thank you.
ANNLAND Aw, what a cutie. That happens with me too. 🐻💋
Dommage.
I think you missed Bobblast 214, part one of this series.... :) :) Thanks for all the great inspiration.
Acrylic is not my medium, but you really make it quite inviting.
Do you ever work in oils? Love your demos and your enthusiasm! Thank you for sharing.
❤️
That's fantastic. Love it. Thanks for the awesome demo. Which colors from Holbein are transparent?
There was two really cool figures collaged in that looked like they were wearing old timey swimsuits or the outfit a strong man at the circus would wear. I was sad when they got hidden underneath the clown pants.
Hi Bob ... Would Gouache work instead of Acrylic? I've only just started painting watercolour at 68 ... much trickier than I thought. Smashing informative videos
Just stumbled on thru here, and am enjoying your paint and personality! Just wondering, at 8:55, is that the way to hold the other brush? LOL
I just found you. I love your art. You are fun watch and a grest teacher. Question. I’d I have already painted people on a large plywood board on acrylic. Can I now add the glue with the collage papers etc… ? Thank you
Yes - you certainly can! Thanks for watching!
Love your lessons. I have 300lb watercolour paper I use. How do I keep it from buckling ?! I’ve soaked and taped it and also used it dry.
Hi Ruth - I don't have problems with 300 lb buckling. Are you sure you have 300 lb and not 300 gms?
Hola Bob, soy Daniel, de Argentina, una consulta quería hacer, la pintura es acrílico, y cuando barres el color lo haces con alcohol isopropilico?
Are translucent colors like high flow acrylics?
Bob, I wish at the end of your video you would show a real real close up of what you have done. Thanks.
Every week you told. Where ar you. Come back please......
You use 300 pound water color paper do you gesso the paper or not. I am totally new at this
Yes, he always gessoes his paper.
i am missing part 1 ?
That clown looks like he needs a curly green wig :)
Enjoy most of his videos but this one was a waste of 12 minutes.
