He has an amazing amount of fantastic songs that are his own. First of all he has his string of big hits from the early sixties, but after The Beatles came along, his record company didn't promote him as much as they should have due to the "new craze"
The thing is that del flawlessly transitioned into the psychedelic era. He put out an album called "the further adventures of Charles Westover," which is his real name, but either way, it is a masterpiece of psychedelic pop rock. He also has some more obscure albums in the later sixties that are mostly covers but he as a lot of his own self penned songs integrated into those albums which are absolutely beautiful rock songs of the time period. Look up tracks like
      "what makes you run,"
      "for a little while,"
      "sister Isabelle,"
      "show me,"
      "move it on over,"
      "break up,"
      "Gemini,"
      "I think I love you,"
      "the house where nobody lives,"
      "stand up,"
      "Thinkin it over"
      "She was mine"
      "Never thought I could"
"silver birch"....etc. one moment he can sound like a 50s rocker, the next like the beach boys pet sounds Era, then like Simon and Garfunkel, the byrds, then like the stones, and yet he keeps his "del shannon" ness through it all. He also did some great rock albums in 1981 and his last in 1990 backed both times with part or all of tom petty and the heartbreakers. The best songs to check out from these times are "walk away,"
      "calling out my name,"
      "life without you,"
      "are you loving me too"
      "sucker for your love" and
      "lost in a memory."

This song , is SO POWERFUL , "power rock" has the 50's 60. 70/s, metal, pop, ballad, power falsetto, his signature carnival organ, with him on stage is all of early ELO and Tom Petty and all the heartbreakers, THEY GIVE THE VIBE, but it is his POWERFUL VOCALS that place this as one of my all time favorites. This probably ended on the charts at 45 or something but I think #1 for weeks!! Compare this to GRUNGE

@Jan Forbes If you look around on YT long enough you will discover the very few reasons why music sucks today and has sucked for a long time. things like electronically removing all the slightly off beats and off notes to make everything perfectly in tune and perfectly on the beat - which also makes a song sound sterile and fake. Things like one songwriter providing all the songs for all the female stars of the last ten years or more, so if they all sound alike it's no wonder, it's one guy recycling the his one song over and over again with minor changes. Then artists run up against the lone conglomeration publishing and/or broadcasting all the songs they feel to be suitable. Spotify is the worst - a bunch of people all trying to sing the same song, with slight differences, all to make a buck, with very little sincere musicianship involved.
We won't see the likes of Del Shannon and good songs ever again, unless all the music producers from the last thirty years are put out to pasture, and new ones with genuine creativity invade the industry. It is too much about not taking chances and making a sure profit. I don't see music improving in my lifetime. Any high school garage band from the 50s on, banging out three-chord covers, was better than 95% or the crap out today.

He cheekily changed the words to "Hats off to Larry" to 'She ran away with another guy and now she's getting fatter.' Also on the bill was Johnny Tillotson and The Springfields (with Dusty), the instrumental group backing him were called the Eagles.

There are a few great concerts on CZcams, and this one ranks in the top ten, maybe top five. If you were alive in the sixties or early seventies you would have heard Runaway, Searching, and Hat's Off to Larry all over AM radio in the US and England. Slightly less play was given to Flirt and Handy Man, just enough to keep the Del Shannon name alive and well. But he saw the take-over of the British invasion, and turned to record producing. I glad he put together this concert and others in the late 80s. He was a fine crowd-pleasing performer, an original rock and roller from the days when electric guitars were fairly young, and electronic keyboards were almost an oddity. His original organist Max Crook built his own small electronic keyboard, which he called the Musitron. Max Crook and his Musitron invention created the unforgettable solo bridge in Runaway.
