  • During the summer months, sharks frequent the Massachusetts coastline. Do you know if it's a basking shark or a white shark? Learn how to identify what species of shark you see.
Although the risk of a shark attack is low, it's wise to use common sense when in the water. Avoid areas frequented by seals and take precautions not to approach any wild animal, no matter how docile they seem.
Video is filmed and produced by Division of Marine Fisheries biologist John Chisholm.

Why would you say the risk of shark attack is low? There has never been a 50,000 plus seal population in our waters in the past 100 years until now. Sharks from all over the are swimming to our water to feast on the massive seal population. If you swim and there are seals anywhere nearby the risk of an attack is high and the chance of survival is low. Just because you can't see a shark in the water doesn't mean they are not there, that's how they hunt!

They say that the chances of being attacked by a shark are less than being struck by lightning. But while anyone in the country could be struck by lightning, only those who swim in the ocean, or perhaps bay/river areas that sharks have access to can be attacked by sharks. A better comparison would be to consider only those who swim in the ocean. How do their chances of shark attack compare with their chances of being struck by lightning? Seems to me their chances of being attacked by a shark are far higher, and certainly for every minute they swim it will be higher. I assume when storms arrive at beaches, people come out of the water. LOL
