  • The Beatles Tape Op Richard Lush tells stories from the Sgt Pepper's Sessions at Abbey Road.
    AudioTechnology magazine recently awarded Richard Lush our Producer/engineer Lifetime Achievement Award. We spent a few days listening to Richard tell his stories of life at Abbey Road with The Beatles, including sessions for 'A Day in the Life', accidentally botching a Lennon vocal take, what John, Paul, George, Ringo and the other George were like to work with, and engineer Geoff Emerick's revolutionary engineering.
    We also walked through his career in Australia producing and/or engineering hits like Sherbet's 'Howzat', Stevie Wright's 'Evie' and the music for the Sydney Olympics opening and closing ceremonies.

      What is it about the mono version that makes it the preferred version?

    • @JanPBtest

      @@huskyjerk Everyone on the team was present preparing that mix. The stereo version was a sort of last-minute addition and not everything was done 100% correctly. In another video Richard mentions how he and Geoff would notice later how they forgot to flange this or that line, etc. He had the amount of phasing and flanging written down on pieces of paper, some of them were misplaced or something. Stereo at that time was a bit like 8K today, not a major target.

      I had McIntosh amps and Klipsch speakers back in the 1970's!!! The whole system was only $23,800.00, however a Linclon was only $7,000, back then so...

    I had a tune in my head that I could not get out. It was the song; "Oh Babe, What would You Say," by Hurricane"Henry" Smith!!! He was the engineer on >100 Beatles Songs at Abbey Roads? I am sure you know his work, you may know him!!! I used to be an engineer at a radio station in Dallas, Texas, in the 1970's I played it back then on the 45rpm. I don't know if I like the song better, or the way he multiplied his voice on the recording better. That was 1971, when "Oh Babe," was released, so there were only wood burning stoves back then!!! At 6.55 "...one with John, one with McCartney". Paul is the only musician Richard refers to just by surname here. Oo-er, not a fan Richard? :-)

    • @DovidM
      @DovidM Před 5 lety +2

      Geoff Emerick has similar views. Geoff said that John was hard to work with (he couldn’t say what he wanted, and then got rude about it). Geoff also said that Paul was a perfectionist. Neither Lush nor Emerick suggest that John was second rate. Both found John to be frustrating to work with. Is the fault on their side or John’s?

    Some great memories from Richard but, I have to disagree with him on "pepper" in mono. There is No clarity in the Mono version, even before the big box of Pepper 2 from 2 or 3 years ago, the stereo beats the Mono hands down except the Vinyl version of the Mono Sgt. Pepper which sounds slightly better than the cd version!
    Just my opinion 😁👍🤪

      @Vingul Před 4 lety +3

      As Geoff Emerick said, the later remasters (think he may have been referring to the 2009 ones) are way too flat and loud. I always prefer The Beatles in mono. One example is the stereo version of Taxman, where the entire rhythm section is in the left channel and the guitars and vocals are to the right. Mono rules.

      @TiqueO6 Před 4 lety

      One question, did you listen to just one of the tracks if you were listening on a stereo turntable or CD player did you summer to mono tracks together that might’ve been slightly out of phase if so you would lose clarity right there. You need to take just one side of the stereo output of a stereo turntable when listening to a mono record and spread that to both speakers.
