  • In this video tutorial I will show you how to sample on the Roland S-550 Digital Sampler. The manual for this sampler is poorly written and confusing at times. I don´t think there are any video out there showing how to sample on this machine, but now there is!
There really isn´t much too it if you take the time to figured what is what in this sampler. The manual could have been so much better in explaining this simple process, but instead the writers made it into rocket science.
I hope you understand my swenglish and that I dont go over the steps to fast for you.
And if you where wondering, my master keyboard as I say in the video is an Ensoniq EPS 16+ hooked up via MIDI to the Roland S-550. And the organ I was sampling from was a Philicorda GM751.
    Peace.

Got a fully working S-550 recently, this video was a big help; thanks!

I got my S-550 last week! Getting what I need for it and I still am nervous but excited to program different types of samples to separate key notes.
Thank you for the tutorial too :D I will be looking forward to using my S-550 too! :D Stay Groovie! 🐼🎨📼

Robert- I'm with you and Aaron Matson on that manual. I used to be on one of these 550's all night for a few years, back when it was current, and must have forgotten how bad it was. Aside from having no logical structure whatsoever, it's chock full of blatantly obvious typos. Doesn't help much that the last sampler manual I had to study (Peavey SP) was written by Craig Anderton himself. No comparison. - and thanks for the video!

In the song “Shattered Dreams”, the Roland S-550 patch “Drum Kit” was heard.

No problem dude, I will try to make one last video tutorial showing how to set the envelopes, filter etc. Stay tuned ;)

Hi, sorry for the late reply. You have to go in to EDIT -> TVA (Time Variant Amplitude) And set the envelope amount to 127, and then go down to the graph and set the sustain amount. The sustain controll is the Point next to the last of the Points in the graph (you can have up to 4 Points, attack, decay, sustain and release) make the sustain graph longer.

Hi dude/dudette. Thanks alot, im happy I could help you. For the moment it aint gonna happen in a while. I have moved to Norway recently and I couldn´t bring all my music gear with me. I still have my s-550 back in Sweden (god I miss it) and as soon as I get back "home" I will try to record another video or two. When I do, I will cover filter/envelopes and misc. If you have any special "requests", please write me a line and I will, WILL, help you out! Take care / Robert

Interesting sampler. It has a very characteristic metallic sound to it. Very strange. Some 12-bit samplers have a wooden or papery sound, and make samples sound more organic. With the S-550, no matter how organic the original sample sounds, it comes out with this metallic sheen and hard edge to it.

I love my s550. Its one of the cheaper 12 bit samplers out. I got mine for 70 bucks. Great tutorial. Do you know how to adjust the sustain, so that when I quickly tap a key it will play the whole sample and not stop when I take my finger off the pad or key? I want to be able to chop drums and control them with my mpc.

He's using a rackmount ART iEQ #290 grayscale video monitor. It has 4 inputs on the back, and four push switches on the front to select one of four sources. Not the best display, to be honest. An HDMI LCD is a better choice.

I had this and I could never fully dig into the deeper features. YES . The manual was horribly written. (By a Japanese guy obviously). I eventually gave it away to a friend as I advanced with computers. He told me he tried to sell it to multiple shops and NO ONE would take it. He literally dumped into a corner trash bin somewhere along 8th ave in NYC. Oh well...

So I've had my s550 for a few days now, and I'll preface this statement by saying I was a sample library developer using E4s and Akai S's while curent and I teach studio engineering for a living for over 20 years.... What a piece of crap not only the manual is but the operating system itself. I've spent two days on this pig and I understand quite abit of programming on it now. Never can be sure with this thing though.
You'd think the big screen would make it easier but no, an E4 with it's normal little old LCD just kills it in operation. Doesn't seem like you can just apply an envelope to a multisample patch all at one time. No... you have to do it to one sample first than copy those parameters to the other samples one at a time. Oh you want to have an alternate version of a multisample patch? Welcome to the wonderful world of SUB-tones. Which means you have to copy all the sample parameters of each sample one at a time and make an alias (sub tone) for each one. Then copy the patch, then remap all the samples (tones) into using the subtones (aliases) yes one at a freaking time. That get's you just one extra patch to tweak one sample at a time. Maybe I'm wrong, I hope I am... I've been reading these badly translated manuals forever and I go to peoples houses and teach them gear I've never even seen before.... but this.... this.... If it didn't sound SO GOOD would be at the bottom of the lake.
