Everyone’s favourite abhumans, ogryns are long on muscle … but not the deepest of thinkers. They’re physically powerful, incredibly tough, and definitely folk you want on your side when the going gets tough. Just don’t ask them to do anything complicated.
Lacking mental dexterity, our ogryns tend towards being very focused on particular tasks and interests. They’re often confused by the little people on their team, which manifests as anything from curiosity, to contempt, to a touchingly protective attitude. After all, even the grouchiest ogryn understands that you can’t be the strongest if you’re the only one left standing …

Its because these Ogryn are Bone 'Eads. Which are Ogryns tasked with corralling other ogryns because they are more intelligent. Most ogryns are too stupid to even speak at all.

I was playing a Veteran and it was just an Ogryn and me left after a nasty battle on difficulty 3. Our teammates were about a 40 seconds walk away in the next encounter area and it was a little quiet.
Ogryn asks "What was it we was meant to be doing again?" to which my Veteran responded "Don't ask me, I was asleep in the briefing!"

oh I actually had this one when I was a psyker, we had a veteran who said "how do I put this? er.. 'big gulliman man beating up spikey boys good!' "

I love the interactions between Ogryns and veterans, those "sah" are adorable.

Ogryn-heavy teams can be interesting. Saw an interaction once that went something like this:
Ogryn 1: "Thing... we're here to do a... thing. Forgot."
Ogryn 2: "I write orders down. Sadly, cannot read."
That's some of the funniest shit I've ever heard. I like how they went from unique locked characters in vermintide to being able to stack classes that actually have great unique interactions with each other
I had the conversation starter at 4:25 with a party of only Ogryn. The responses went something like, "None are as strong as me," then "None are as pretty as me," and then ended with the "None of them are hy-genic like me."
Had to pull over into a corner for a minute to get over just how goofy these oafs are, I absolutely love it.

One of my favorite Ogryn dialogues is when they get complimented for their work by a Veteran, to which they respond "Thank you sah!...W-would you like I share some of my nosh?" Absolutely adorable.
Love how all the veteran voice options treat the ogyrn like a brother.
I mean given how Ogryn’s are often enlisted in the Imperial Guard, it makes sense that the veterans see them as the closest thing to family in this hellhole.
The Imperial Guardsmen love Ogryns because the Ogryns care so much about them and regularly sacrifice themselves to protect the "lil uns".
The ministry of the Imperium love Ogryns because they're too stupid to be able to comprehend dissent and questioning of faith.
and the Psykers love Ogryns because they are freaks just like them.
The only things that hate Ogryns are at whatever is at the end of an Ogryn's bayonet.

I love the polite ogre. My backstory was Gorbitz-RokBreaker was just a miner on a harsh mining planet. He was tough and venerated for his hard work.
After an accident happened, he was separated from his work orders and was charged with direlection of duty.
He's just a tough guy who's proud he's tough. He just wants to help and do his job.
Good guy orge.
What the hell? Almost the same backstory of my Ogryn Kolrog. Actually quite timid for an Ogryn. As he worked his entire life in a mine instead of joining the armed forces. Never had to fight anyone. Because who the hell would pick a fight with an Ogryn?
The major difference is though that after a major mining accident all of his friends died. Only he survived because he is such immensely though. Was then blamed for the accident by his superiors who needed a scapegoat who failed to plan the digging route correctly and accidently hit a underground water reservoir.
Not able to understand that he was framed and sent into a penal legion for direlection. Being repeatedly told that it was his fault he slowly started to believe it himself (like a small child being verbally abused by his parents)
Now having immense guilt for having "supposedly" killed all of his friends.
Thrown into a Penal Legion he is not comfortable at all having to kill people he never met and not able to understand of the concept of "spiky boyz bad, deserved to be smashed" like he is constantly told.
But driven by immense guilt he does it anyway. Because he realized that those "spiky boyz" ARE trying to HURT him and his new friends. (even though he doesn't know why)
And he will NOT lose anymore FRIENDS. Even if he is forced to hurt other people.
Slowly though. He really starts to enjoy it though. Grabing the spiky boyz at the leg und using them as in improvised mace to sweep the bridge clear of the other "spiky boyz". (he still is an Ogryn after all)

How many millions or even billions people work on such a mining world and how infamously the Empire doesn't care about safety regulations in their mines and factories.
They are porbably going to be thousands major accidents in such a mining world just in a day.

Narrator: And so Kolrog joined Gorbitz squad. Teaching him how fun it is to smash those "Spikey Bozy". While the "little ones" of Gorbitz crew slowly managed to convince him that the terrible accident was not his fault and he was framed. As so many in the penal legion were.
So Gorbit and Kolrog alongside their squad would be smahing "bad spikey boyz" heads for many years to come.
A true Happy Ending of this story.
At least by the dark grim reality of the Warhammer 40'000 Universe.

I cannot for the life of me remember but I think there was an interaction where the zealot goes,"Purge the heretics! Exterminate the mutant!" And the ogryn goes," Does that include me?" In a sad voice lol.
Hoping for a voice line that acknowledges the Ogryn 'But its dark in there!' morale check. When an Ogryn is tasked to enter a dark or claustrophobic environment, they'll need a morale roll for their team to motivate them to proceed.
They are afraid of dark and tight spaces right?

The Ogryn are so accurate in this game, the only issue is they’re not as faithful to the emperor and imperium as they are in lore as they thought even their commissars were the angels of the emperor.
Well, probably because those are Active Imperial Guard Ogryn who have been indoctrinated for a while. These are misfit Ogryns

These ogryn sound like REALLY intelligent ogryns, on top of that they were prisoners at one point, so they did *Something* bad. You got yourself an ogryn that may not be as religious as your standard indoctrinated guard ogryn.
@@versok2999 It does help that Commisars have every reason to make Ogryn friends. Having a big guy at your back can be quite reassuring. Just ask Commisar Greiss, whose partner was the inimitable Nork Deddog.
I feel that there should be special dialogue for Ogryns when talking about chaos-infested Ogryns, or even the Plague Ogryn. Maybe talk about how they’re “bad ones” or something.

@@Lemnock They just sound similar, Victor is voiced by Timothy Bentinck, the closest thing to him in Darktide is the male Seer voice and that's Dan Starkey, the Savant is a black voice actor named Tashinga Bepete and the Loner is voiced by Gred Jones.
Same for Bardin, his voice actor is David Rintoul, the Ogryn voices are these: the Bodyguard voiced by Toby Longworth, the Bully voiced by Greg Jones again and the Brawler performed by Tom Dussek.

Ogryns are so pure. The fact that they stand up to the pessimistic view on their position with "no! Not expendable!" Is so underrated
The Ogryns' voices and intonations sound like rugged and gruff British factory workers and dockers from the 1860's onwards.
I like it.
With one sounding like he's one of the Eastern European migrants that came into the same job and picked up on the language

7:05 that felt like a whole scripted scene, I hope it's not just a coincidence and there are dialogues for attacking an enemy who downed you before.
It's coincidence; I used that voice in beta. That voice line plays when you're not being picked up/it takes a while to be picked up.

I do love how they've characterized ogryn as not completely braindead like some of the older fluff. instead they have a bit of memory loss trouble and simple interests.

@@BIGESTblade see, that's what I'm talking about. some of the older lore surrounding ogryns made them out to be as dumb as wild animals, but with the comedy of being able to speak and say dumb things, which never made much sense and seems like one of those throw away lines that ends up sticking around way too much. but hey, ork intelligence scales with their size too, just look at The Beast for example

Even small orks can be meks, painboyz and kommandoz, while even the smartest orgyn will never grasp how his bloody weapon operates past "press the trigger" and "put ammo in".
@@BIGESTblade you're missing the point. what you're describing is the "traditional" characterization of the ogryn, whereas Darktide characterizes them as significantly smarter than the traditional characterization, which I appreciate. The way I figure it, Ogryn being as dumb as the traditional characterization depicts them is just a stereotype that was codified into the imperial truth, but isn't actually true.
See also the Ghazkhul Thrakka book for an example of an ogryn psyker lady. she's a cool character and the book specifically emphasizes how that shouldn't be possible according to the imperial truth, deliberately pointing out how the imperial truth is bullshit.

Ogryn intelligence varies. There are intelligent Ogryn who are like these even before become bone’eads. It’s just a rarity.
To be fair, lore is mostly sweeping generalizations and stereotypes. Can’t cover individual variance as well.
Ogryns are simple, yes. Tho not necessarily stupid. Of course you could also say they are generous with their intellect in this game for the sake of engaging dialogue.

but the ogryns we play as in darktide are implied to all be "Boneheads" with enhanced intelligence implants in their brain.
So these Ogryns are having a computer do most of the thinking for them, and because of that they're smart enough to speak complete sentences and maybe even count past 10.

The fact that they don't even consider Abhumans such as "ogryns" to be mutants at all despite the fact that they pretty much are is incredibly wholesome. You get the feeling that all Abhumans are basically oppressed within the Imperium but this game kinda says otherwise. They're treated well enough as fellow humans, albeit with some genetic hiccups or evolutionary oddities.
Ogryns are well loved by the Guard, it's the fucked up ones that fall for Chaos that get the shit list.

honestly people in the imperium hate psykers more than they hate mutants, considering the Guard still employs Ogryns and Ratlings in their ranks, but you never know when a good pysker suddenly pops and half your platoon gets sucked into a warp portal or daemons spawn from thin air
Some personalities even get angry that the Ogryn asks about the term "abhuman", saying that it's rude and they shouldn't worry about it. The group love their big angry dude and refuse to believe that he is anything but human.
The Bully Ogryn is a badass. Bodyguard is a teddy bear. And Brawler is an all rounder. Theyre all fantastic, but the Bully is my favorite. Doesn’t take shit, and when a Plague Ogryn appears, he just fearlessly says “ELLO PLAGUE OGRYN!” It’s very hype

I know it's a little thing, but I've only been into 40k for like 1,5 years, and it's so cool to hear events like the Lion Gate or the Indomitus Crusade, that I have been reading about, carry into videogame dialogue.
My favorite is that my Sharpshooter flirts with the Ogryn when he is helping her up.
Saying things like
"You come here often?"
"Fancy meeting you here."

I swear whenever the Bodyguard Ogryn speaks, all I can hear is Bardin from Vermintide. It just makes me think it’s him if he got hit in the head a bit too hard. It’s very similar, even though it’s a different voice actor.

god i love the ogryn. i can't wait to get my hands on the game and play as the ogryn. darktide makes me fell like they could make a playable ogre mercenary character for vermintide with all the weapons it could use. clubs, scimitars and ogre pistols and led bealchers.

I love Ogryns. They're the main reason I still play this game. I'm new to Warhammer (Darktide is my first game) and looking forward to Space Marines 2, maybe we'll see them there as well (not as playable characters but on the side)
