    please explain the 6 count versus the 8 count swing basic

      Great question! The short answer is that there are several 'basics' in swing dancing. Typically 6 and 8 count basics. They whip patterns in WCS & ECS each have 8 counts. Sometimes teachers (incorrectly) will count the 6 count basic as 8 steps. While there are 8 steps in a 6 count basic, there are only 6 counts or beats of music. This can lead to some confusion. Does that clarify things? Or make them more confusing lol Let me know I'm glad to dig in and help more.
      Here are a couple articles that might help with general knowledge of swing dancing:

      I have an answer if I take your question literally. WCS has no real one basic step like the other dances., but a collection of basic step made up of 6 and 8 counts. LIndy has an 8 count basic and most of the patterns are 8 count. ECS has a 6 count basic and most of the patterns are 6 count although as with any dance the basic timing can vary. Just don't make the mistake of lumping all swings together because each style is different.

    This looks just like Jive, is this the same dance or just very similar?

    • @WestCoastSwingOnline
      @WestCoastSwingOnline  Před 4 lety

      It's basically the same dance. The music speed is different so it looks different at the profesional level for sure but the basics are almost the same.

      @@WestCoastSwingOnline I am trying to learn the first move you start at 00:01:40. The tripple step you called "arround the world" where you spin for 3/4th of a circle... how do I lead this as a man so that the woman knows that she should do a tripple step aswell? Usually me and my dance partner do that turn with only two steps so that we get back into the basic steps (tripple step to the right followed by a rock step). I don't know how my leading must change so that she won't double step while spinning, because if she does then she will end up on the wrong foot... the rock away and inside turn right after is so damn cool and I want to try it out, but if she won't tripple step while spinning but double step (we learned to do this spin with double steps and practice and dance it like this for a year now) I can't lead her into that after the spin.
      I want to make it very clear for the woman when to double step and when to tripple step while spinning there. Can you tell me what to do there? Thanks in advance, and sorry if the text is hard to read, greetings from Germany :)

      Typhoonator519 hey there!
      I’m not sure if I understand the question so if I miss the mark please let me know and I’ll try again 😉
      In a basic after the rock step we would expect the follower to do 2 triple steps.
      That’s the expectation we have here.
      Now the specifics of the footwork of the pattern we cover in the video.
      These are the ideal steps but as long as the follower (and the leader) stay in basic time the pattern should work.
      I have luck leading it even if the follower doesn’t know the ‘idea’ footwork provided that she keeps basic time.
      After the ‘table top’ part....
      If the leader rocks diagonally side/forward, that should load up the turn coming out of the rock for the follower.
      Let me know if that clarify things if not I’m happy to share more thoughts.
      Thanks for the question!

    Why some swing they counting 8 steps while you counting just 6 steps?

    • @WestCoastSwingOnline
      @WestCoastSwingOnline  Před 3 lety

      Great question! In the basic there are 6 counts of MUSIC. When we count a triple step "1&2" we're counting the MUSIC not the steps. The reason we add the "&" when we count is to show where the 2nd step goes. So in a triple step there are 3 steps in 2 beats of music. I hope that helps! -Brian
