If you bring home a girl that your dad doesn't think is a valuable wife, you're probably blinded by love. In a respected household you usually listen to your parents. If you don't you're still in the wrong. So yeah you can still marry who you want but it isn't for the best of you and your parents know that. So if people follow your dumb advice they will end up in a toxic relationship and will lose respect for your parents and probably get divorced.
