Plates are nice, but any relic from the Civil War you find is really cool. To touch something , no else has touched in 150 years is awesome.

Beau..I work in medicine..and just watched Ken Burns Civil war series..and after lookin at that bullet I can see why the horrible trauma and devastation to the human body was rendered..just incredible pain and suffering...I thank you for giving such a look back into history...and btw..man hasn't changed..just the history..

I have just started metal detecting here in South Africa. Due to the prolonged drought, our local dams are very low, so there is a lot of dry exposed mud to explore with a metal detector. Today I found a silver ring, one discontinued coin from 1977, lots of modern coins and sinkers, and some bullets. I do wish metal relics in the southern African region were older, but alas, our oldest metal relics are associated with the Dutch settlers and after, pretty much in the same historical period as oldest North American metal artifacts.

Great video and glad you are finding some American History and sharing with everyone. Just wanted to share with you some facts concerning what people have asked me about for years. The difference between "2 ring" and "3 ring" bullets. Actually, the terms "2 rings" or "3 rings" is incorrect. They are in fact, grooves. Although we tend to use common nicknames passed down by earlier relic hunters, bullets such as the Sharps variety have true rings. Raised "rings" would be a more correct (although still a nick name) term, whereas grooves would be a more precise term for the common "Minie ball" we encounter. The term Minie comes from a Frenchman who first introduced the elongated bullet. Thus his name is attached to the projectile we so cherish. As for what you heard at Gettysburg, it is backwards. The Confederate Gardner bullet has 2 rings whereas the Union Minie normally has 3 rings (grooves). However, d2 brings out a very valid point: the Confederacy used whatever was available, and so did the Union under certain circumstances. Both sides imported many arms, including the British Enfield rifle and ammunition. The Gardner bullet, although a true CS bullet, was later discontinued in favor of the "home made" Enfield bullet. You'll find Gardner's all over the Eastern Theatre, but not as common in the West. There will likely never be an accurate answer to how many different bullets were used during the Civil War. Some estimate as many as 2,000 different styles and variations. All I can say is weigh, measure and document your finds. You'll be helping future generations unravel the past. The Confederates also had a single "groove bullet which the Union surgeons hated because they would actually shatter upon impact. I found 2 and have in my possesion that I found last year virtually 100 feet from my backdoor in Southwest Missouri. I took one of them and fired it through a black powder into a compound that I make for forensic purposes and it actually shattered into 5 pieces. I don't know the physics behind it as it looks very simple and as I stated earlier, it is very similar to the others except for the fact that it has a wider and deeper groove. Good hunting

The Minie ball was certainly no joke. I actually use a .57 caliber minie ball from a modern mold in my 20 guage shotgun for deer. Instant dead drop every time so far. They are devastating. Plus, the medicine of the day was nothing to be amazed at. I just know for a fact, the Minie ball was and still is one of the most deadly projectiles created. Hell, it is what all modern bullets were based on! A very deadly projectile to say the least.
