  • What’s exotic cuisine for some is home-cooking for others. In southern Germany, Black Forest Cake is an everyday treat. But for Chinese student Wen-jing and her mother, it’s a mountain of cream and chocolate.
    Wen-jing studies in the southern German city of Stuttgart. When her mother visits from China, it’s an opportunity to sample the delights of southern German cuisine: "Maultaschen” with potato salad, beef roulade and bread dumplings... it’s nothing like the food they get in China. But the pair come from a country with a proud culinary tradition. They don’t just want to try new dishes, they want to learn how to make them. The highlight: learning to bake Black Forest Cake. A report by Almut Maria Röhrl.

    Germans might think we Chinese eat Hünde Fleisch (*eyes rolling*, not a common food in China), I personally have never eaten them, but things like raw meat is not in our territory. Most Chinese will probably think "how can people even enjoy eating Mettbröchen, wouldn't you get sick or something and that bloody after taste. Chinese also think why are a lot of German food either very sweet or overly salty and you guys can eat hot food in one moment and the next moment eating ice-cream which is unhealthy from our point of perspective. Because there are a lot of breads in the diet, we will always think that it is too dry. Additionally we prefer rice over potatos for our main source of carbs. Eating a block of Cheese like Camembert is definitely not our thing. The list goes on hehe.
    There is a CZcams channel called Saarland 2 China in which there is a video showing a Chinese perspective of German food..

      @hovawartfreunde4599 Před 3 lety +1

      I think you are not wrong about the sweet and salty thing. Food here get's more extreme in these two areas. The other cause might be the famine after ww2. Our grandparents fell into an extreme afterwards craving sweet and fatty tastes. Our former chancellor Helmut Kohl ate pure butter for example and my own grandparents were really strange in food matters and eating habits as well since they nearly starved when they were children.

    • @hmvollbanane1259
      @hmvollbanane1259 Před 2 lety

      Take a cut of beef as shown in the video, roll it out, wash it, dry it and cover it lightly with mittelscharfen senf (german medium hot mustard), take an onion or a shallot and cut it into half moons, a slice of speck (or if you can't get German speck bacon will do) and slice some pickled cucumbers (german or danish if you want it a bit sweeter pickle) put about 1/2 onion and 1 1/2 pickled cucumber and 1 slice of bacon onto the beef, flap in the sides along its length and roll it, tie it with cooking garn, put some lard into a pan on high heat and sear the meat from all sides (only sear, don't cook), take it out of the pan and put it into a stewing pot. Turn down the heat and put into the same pan (don't wash it) some minced celery, onions, leeks and carrots, let them "turn blond" (so take some colour but not to the point where they become brown), take some red wine and just cover the vegetables with it, stir and let it simmer untill all the liquid has evaporated and the vegetables are once again dry roasting and repeat untill you have roughly used half a bottle of red wine, finish it with some beef bullion, salt and pepper and a good swig of the pickle juice, fill it into the pot with the rouladen and let it simmer for 1 1/2 hours on low heat (in the oven at 160°C). Check occasionaly on the liquid and refill a bit if necessary. Check if the rouladen have become soft (it should offer little resistance when pressing on it, otherwise let it simmer for another half an hour), take the rouladen out, put the liquid through a sieve and thicken it with some starch dissolved in a glass of water mixed with a teaspoon of mustard untill you like it (or if you don't want to serve the vegetables as a side just purée them to thicken the sauce) and you are done. Best served with salt potatoes or Klöße (german potatoe/bred dumplings) and a side of rotkohl/ Blaukraut (depending on the soil acidity of the region either red or blue cabbage prepared similarly to sauerkraut)

    • @hmvollbanane1259
      @hmvollbanane1259 Před 2 lety

      Oh and I just recalled that most countries only think of the sticks when referring to celery, in Germany we usually use the root (the thing the guy told her to peel in the video) so you want that part of the plant and not the green bit.
