  • Have you ever wondered how exactly we got our current calendar? Was it always 12 months? How did they end up with 365 as the number of days? And why on earth do we have leap days, much less leap seconds? Writer and producer Daniel Seehausen is here to answer all of these questions and more in the podcast that answers the questions you never thought to ask.

    I like how you simplified and put an end to the argument of who's using the right calendar. Time and space just simply won't let us accurately measure and keep track o the days no matter how hard we try.

    Lunar/ solar is the ancient Israelite calendar scriptures Nex The Most High told them to use the lights in the sky to clock the days, years and seasons. The new moon is definitely the natural beginning of the month as the word month itself is the proto Germanic word meaning moon.

    Ironically 11 minutes shouldn't seem a wild digression since most waste far more time than that in a number of activities throughout their days. Fascinating bit of history with the Cleopatra tale as man seems more intent on pleasing the dictates of 21 year old princess ousted from her seat of power than caring about what day it truly was.

    The best "calendar" is probably just to measure which direction the shadows point when the sun sets, in ancient times they would do this with little towers of rocks, this method is convenient and precise and very accurate. The second best is a lunar phase calendar, which is precise and very convenient but can be inaccurate; the third best is a solar calendar, which is precise and very accurate but can be inconvenient; and the fourth best is a lunar cycle calendar, which is convenient and accurate but can be very imprecise. Although this all varies depending on the specific method used.

Instead of having BC years which count downwards, all human historical events would get a positive year number, and all the AD years stay the same except getting a 1 in front, so that this year is 12022. The first Olympics wouldn't be 776 BC, they'd be in 9225 HE; the Battle of Thermopylae would be in 9521 HE instead of 480 BC and Julius Caesar would have lived from 9901-9957.

    The true inventor of the Gregorian calendar was Nikephorus Gregoras a Byzantine Greek in 1324. The Byzantine emperor didn’t want to create confusion and disagreements within his empire so he dismissed it. People don’t understand that the Renaissance in science and art actually started in the Byzantine empire but unfortunately after the ottoman conquest the brightest minds of the Greek world fled to the west so the Renaissance was continued in Italy because no civilization could flourish under the ottomans

For this particular video I am commenting how the work of certain man (Nikephoros Gregoras) is not mentioned. The Eastern Roman Empire is seen in the west as backwards. In reality It was a beacon of medieval civilization where the foundations of the renaissance were laid. The artistic, technological and scientific progress of Byzantium is ignored in the west which makes sense since the Greeks were under Ottoman rule and could not promote their culture or make any cultural advancements and since historiography was in the hands of the westerners all the medieval Greek (Byzantine) figures of art and science don’t get the attention they deserve while their work is now claimed by others

      @Leoforos13 Před 3 měsíci

      @@gabriellima7900 So YES. It should be mentioned that all this progress of the renaissance in the west had already started in Byzantium. And it is not a matter of nationalism (Greek) or chauvinism. Yes the eastern Roman Empire especially in its final centuries was more ethnically homogenous (Greek) but you could also find Slavs, Armenians, Jews or even Turks. Anyone who was an orthodox Christian, identified as Roman and spoke Greek could ascend in the church, the army and the educational sector (or even become emperor)

      Sabbath is Saturday, while Sunday is the first day of the week.
      Since Christ died a Sunday the Christians made it the new Sabbath to celebrate Mass, and renamed it "Dominicus" in the Latin speaking world, which means "Day of the Lord".
      To make matters funnier, the Latin speaking Christians renamed Saturday to Sabbath, so now in languages like Spanish you have Sábado (Sabbath) followed by Domingo (Dominicus).

    The Persians have a different calendar with it’s first day being the start of spring (the spring equinox) and it’s last date being the last day of winter. To me it has never made logical or scientific sense as to why the year starts on January 1st for the western world. I know it’s based on Philosophy and illusionary Roman God Janus and has nothing to do with science which is why it seems ignorant and blind to be following archaic myths.

    May I ask, why don't you think the keeping of time, started with Jubilee? You act like time keeping is natural, I would argue that obsessing over time, is not a natural concept. To act like it's natural, is dismissive. Only Jewish history gets to the root of the cause. Then God was born into the world and time wrapped around him, bc He is the alpha and Omega, beginning and the End. After this life, time will run on a different scale, called eternity. God will forever see you as perfect, or a sinner, for all eternity. Only way to be seen as perfect, before God, is to accept God's perfect sacrifice, His only begotten Son.
    But good video!
