The fact that you don’t think you’re cool, kinda makes you cool. Another excellent video JM 👏👏👏

second video and I'm in, even if I don't know quite why. I always just want to find out how to sell myself, but you know what, it's not my thing. I just write songs, no public, no aim, nothing.

Thoughtful stuff Jon. Woh I have no problem writing non-trendy music. It's music that's similar to songs people like that I had trouble writing.
I experienced an epiphany about pop music about 15 years ago, wherein I realized it's called popular music because people like it. I had to ask myself an existential question - whether refusing to listen to, study and write pop music forms meant I didn't WANT to be liked? That was not the case. So I changed my tune.
I also simplified my tune. This next part is abolutely true. John Lennon actually appeared to me in a dream. He sang "Imagine there's no seven... " and stopped. He just stared at me after that.
When I woke up, I went back through a bunch of the songs I'd written with major 7's, minor 7's, unhinged 7's in EVERY CHORD everywhere. I took out all those 7's, like John had suggested in my dream. I'd been hoarding them. I decided to get STINGY with extended chords.
The result? It instantly made the songs go from flimsy gossamer to solid objects you can grab onto. Any layman can get their ear around them.
As much as I love that Vulcan Nerve Pinch of a 7, they were watering down the song. The melody might have a 7 sensibility, but if everything is 7, then nothing is 7. Adding maybe ONE or TWO back in to a chord, became candy. Taking them out meant the melody could shine.
This works with catnip too. Cats go bonkers over it, but it wears off after a while, and they don't want more. Because it's only really effective like once a day.
Anyway not sure where I'm going here, but may need an uber to get back. Cheers from Fort Worth. Peace!

I didn't think Peter's track was stale or out of place. It matched the 'amateurish' theme by reflecting immaturity. And isn't that the whole point of the backing track - to convey a certain feeling or emotion that reflects the subject?

Its good to get out of your comfort zone. Almost everything I write these days is pretty melancholy but Im nearly finished on a hard rock, high energy library album thats more like what I was playing 25 years ago. I've really enjoyed it, along with the challenges of writing to a brief.

Good stuff Jon! Very interesting and helpful points. I could totally relate to Peter talking about the ego. When I’m writing music for release under my name I sometimes catch myself thinking “how does this music make me look?” Which is why I love writing for film/media where I only care about what the music does for the story and characters. In a strange way, that seems to take a heavy burden off of the writing process.

This is just the video i need to see , have my first freelance job where i have to write an upbeat acoustic pop instrumental but for the past 10 years or so most of the music ive been writing has been on the experimental and dark side . I know im capable of doing it but it makes quite the interesting challenge .

Pretty cool! i always wondered about this idea of writing music this way. i find it challenging to enjoy producing enough to push through the boring times of making music thats not "it" for me. But maybe I need to fully commit to the profession and take a non bias standpoint to further my career. Thank you!

Music has always been a medium of communication, like how art can either be arthouse pieces or it could be a bunch of stick figures talking about how to deal with a widespread virus. When producers pick music for a video containing information, they're doing it to make us feel a certain way. I think this commenter does not understand this at the basic level.

Always entertaining videos! I agree completely, it’s a constant battle between writing the music we want to write versus what would actually work well in this business. I think what also probably accounts for your success is you have an excellent eye for film. Keep up the fantastic content!

what is very sad, is that, someone (when it's not "something"), who don't compose, make music, got to decide what you should do as a music writer... As a writer myself (always on the " kind of respected", "kind of not succesfull" sort ), i finally decided, not to give a damn, what's trending or not, and keep doin' what i like and sound good to me ( or to my friends) and not sellin' my ass, to an elusive success...i make my peace with bein unsuccessfull, making some money elsewhere, and keep doin' things that i love, the way i love it...music is very much, life-less thoses days, and seem like the worst it is, the best value it gets in the market...I want no part of it. i thing it's a bit sad, but would be a lot sader for me if i had to try to do those kind of stuff

'A**y' (Andy? Augy? Angry?) was just... ummm... angry... or frustrated... because he had, just the night before(!), written a masterpiece using a new/cool/moody cinematic sample library that he had just downloaded, and he wanted YOU to use HIS cue in your video. And when you didn't, he just HAD to talk badly about the music you did use. C'mon 'A**y' -- don't be an 'A**y'! :-P
