- Hyundai’s Ioniq is a family of fuel-efficient vehicles. The most popular should be the Hybrid model. It has Toyota Prius’ number... and then some. Tom Voelk drives both the Electric and Hybrid Blue Ioniq models.

About Tom:
Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting.
The Ioniq looks like a regular car. Its not trying to stand out by looking like an Eighth graders art project of what a "future car" will be like.
The current Prius is just plain ole weird looking.
Doug N it is boring looking I'll give you that
Great review Tom. Hyundai seems to have given Toyota a run for the money with this car. Similar or better mpg, drives normal, more stylish, better warranty. For what it is, #win for Hyundai
Ultimately, I like to think it's a win for consumers. Choice is good. Good choices are better.
Keep it up! Looking forward for more videos from you, don't stop!
I sat in the Ionic Hybrid Blue while I was at the dealership getting my Genesis serviced, I must say I was rather pleasantly surprised by the interior materials for the price point.
I like the extra stuff at the end of these videos.
You mentioned that the Ioniq uses a regular 6-speed automatic. I believe it's a DCT. Supposedly, the fact that the Ioniq powerplant utilizes an electric motor, the DCT here does not exhibit the kind of slow speed characteristics that are reported in some non-hybrid cars that use a DCT, apparently making the Ioniq's trans feel more like a regular auto-trans.
Yes, when I'm talking about the drivetrain, I state that it is indeed a dual clutch transmission.
I like your reviews Tom. How about the Alfa Romeo Giulia? TI. That review will bring in the view numbers.
Great review a usual Tom, nice car too.
Nice content!
Hey Tom, did you like the public transit bus seat patterns in the Ioniq Blue model? 😆😆
I like these better because I don't have to buy a transfer.
How much does it cost you to charge your ELR per month and where does your energy come from?
I got 65 mpg at my last fill up, blue model, great car
Great Review as always.
So Tom if you had to choose which one would you spend your money on
Toyota Prius or Hyundai Ioniq or Kia Niro?
Well, I'm not in the market for a car, and advising anyone else I would say "it's a personal choice". That said, there's there's always room in my garage for a Porsche Cayman S.
Why do reviewers always seem to forget that these cars make little sense if one doesn't own a garage?!
kraenk12 ... with the hybrid it doesn't matter. Even the full electric would make sense if your employer was a green company that offered charging stations at work.
Everyone should go for the electric model. Great vehicle!
If you live in California...
Or almost anywhere in the Europe. I seem to have no issues doing 500km+ one way drives with ioniq electric, just as fast as going with gas. Charging at 500km/h from regular 50kW tap is just killer.
You mentioned only filling your ELR once in 18mo, but that can be a wide set of error bars on the mileage for someone regularly driving press loaners etc. How many miles in those 18 months on those almost two tanks of gas?
About 8,000 miles. However, I don't think I'd buy much more gas. When I worked at the TV station in Seattle I would drive round trip 25 miles which takes no gas. But, I quit six months after I bought the car so I only drive it 2-3 days a week now. And sometimes that means I'll take it to Portland or Vancouver. That's really where I burned most of the gas.
Great review. I think is manufacturers can find just the right blend as Hyundai does in this instance, they would be having a lot of luck with selling pure electric.
I want the hybrid
How do you like your ELR?
When will you be driving the new Elantra GT?
Cool!
Also the hybrid has a easy jump start switch on the dashboard, brilliant Hyundai.
Hey I’ve got a hybrid blue 2017 she’s pushing 80 thou miles and going strong . How has your vehicle been doin ?just curious .
0:32 What does it matter if its only sold in California? I'm from Croatia and I watch your reviews so...and I'm sure a lot of people are interested in all electric model the most.
Mario D. Zmaj out of all the states in the US. California has the most fleshed out infrastructure of ev charging stations/access points. I believe also California has the most aggressive/beneficial tax credits/state credits for buying Ev's compared to the rest of the states.
People in the other 49 states and a few territories might want to know before heading to their local dealer. There are also Canadians, I hear.
Just wondering, with that strong regenerative braking, do the brake lights come on?
Yes
200 miles + range coming next year, and also the Kia Niro will have an EV version has well.
200 mile range also means another $5K plus an even smaller cargo area than the current Ionic EV.
Bigger battery costs more money and has to go somewhere.
Review the civic type r !!
So you filled your car up once in the 13 months you owned it?
The gas in the tank is going bad.
looks like seattle area
Gasoline is cheap...for now. Even after Harvey shut down so many TX refineries. $2.45 per gallon in St Louis area (it was $1.99 pre Harvey).
But but one world disaster could send prices to the stratosphere and cars like Ioniq will be very popular.
D N 6 months into the future, and I’m looking at 3.65 a gallon in Cali. I’m switching my Chrysler for an Ioniq. Hate to see my Chrysler go, though.
J G ... I hear ya man. I like a bigger car myself. And nothing will ever satisfy like the torque of V8 or even a V6.
But saving money on fuel is a kind of satisfaction in itself.
Keep the Chrysler for weekends....lol
J G .... btw, gas is $2.57/gal in Missouri today. April 21.
D N gas just rose to 3.72 avg in my town... jeezus.
@@dougn2350 you will be surprised at the get up and go of the hybrid blue version. Ive owned one since new girlfriends car . Close to 80 thou miles on it now, it drives like its on rails not clunky at all very well.
awesome Neighbors
Wonder if we'll have autopilot in affordable cars in 50 years
Probably, if we don't destroy ourselves before then.
I personally enjoy driving so autopilot is not of interest to me. However.... I have been on long road trips when I was only a hundred miles from home but too tired to keep driving. It would be awesome to switch on autopilot and wake up in my driveway. If we don't destroy ourselves first...lol.
Машины хорошие и цены недорогие, но отсутствие на заднем ряде комфортных удобств - это плохо ..!
Car companies let everyone know your car is "eco" by making cheesy plastic hubcaps that look like they're from a toy car.
Despite that, these cars are game-changers. I like them a lot.
(Oh, who am I kidding? I'd go for a big hybrid like the Malibu.)
The wheels are alloy actually, just a flush design. Without looking at the specs I'm guessing Ionic has similar interior space to the Malibu Hybrid, probably a bigger cargo area.
Alloys that look like plastic imitations of hubcaps? Now THAT is meta.
These wheels are actually designed this way to be more aerodynamic. They're light and create less turbulence.
Wow! Fuel economy of a Prius, but with better driving dynamics and design! It's not soul crushing and embarrassing like the Prius!
And the Hyundai warranty is 10 years or 100,000 miles!
Lifetime lithium battery warranty is a big deal.
You said, "on 220 current" at 01:12. I think you meant to say 220 volts as current is measured in amps and the two are not interchangeable.
I'm just being conversational, and "current" is perfectly acceptable in that regard.
It IS 220 current. He's not measuring the resistance of the current (which is measured in Amperes), he is saying the current is a 220v current.
how many km?
Not sure what you're asking hans...
hans wolfgang km/l maybe? I think that might be the most pertinent question
Maybe range.
Hyundai needs to over a free rim swap. It will cost them sales. On Hybrid's, Pure EV's It's always a given to order better tires & sell the original ones with next to no miles on them. Use TireRack for reviews & order elsewhere.
The difficulty is in selling the originals. Not many cars use those low resistance hybrid tires.
first! yes!!! yes yes Mon!!!!
Congrats! Try again next week.
high-UN-day. Google it.
Hunday? It's hi-un-die
In the US the company uses the pronunciation "hun-day", rhymes with Sunday. It's not my call to make.
Driven Car Reviews no way? Seriously? I thought people just pronounced it how they want in the US lol. Some other guy called it a "honday" like a Honda.
That is NOT how your pronounce it. Like the person above, it's pronounced like Sunday with a Hy
Amin.Vlogs 현대 = Hyun Dae
Why Europeans say "hi un die"? ㅋㅋ
I remember when these cars first came to the US. They made a point of informing us how to pronounce the brand name.
Its definately Hun-day like Sunday.
I normally just accept however people say it and move on. But since Tom chimed in I felt compelled to back him up ...in fear of the evil twin rearing his handsome head.
Those seats look straight out of a '98 Accent! Hideous!
Mr. Hand I know but it's on the base trim.
Ugly wheels!
Ford called. They want their tail lights back.
It's kind of bland
The prius is too BAM and this is too BLAH
dude, you have Goldilocks syndrome... lol
Doug N lol yea there needs to be that right one!
Mike
But seriously, you have a good point. A true sport version of an affordable hybrid/electric car could be a great marketing tool. Getting auto enthusiasts interested in a performance eco cars could ignite a more universal interest.
An eco car that would satisfy even the hard to please Goldilocks dudes ;-)
Niro may be just right for you.
360p squad
Even your hair looks better than that car.
I'll, uh, take that as a compliment?
If you think Tom's hair looks good you should check out his twin brother Jerry. He's smoking hot! But watch your wallet... lol.
