      @@LoveLady-wn3eg Oh, no, there were lots of homes with toilet planters in the yards, all over the country. My mother had a toilet, wringer washer, old tin double sink, tires, and a flower "bed" which was a real bed frame, head and foot boards- all filled with flowers. We are in northern Michigan and my Aunt living in Kentucky had her "yard ornaments", too.

    My brother recently built my parents a ramp and to keep it from being slippery he painted it with some type of paint that has texture to prevent it from being slippery. Works great! What a blessing that you can do so many things and don’t have to hire someone to do it for you!

      Yes. Can get that 50° sand added to whatever color or stain you want on the ramp. Any good paint store. How about raised flower beds along the side of the house. Can use just a simple frame build and box construction and install the soil and flowers in the boxes. Paint as desired. When my mom moved up to Alaska she stayed in the smaller house on the property I found some extra planks and a bunch of old asphalt roofing shingles. So I basically beefed up an old boardwalk that was most of the way there. It was already wide enough so I just made the walkway consistent enough for a wheelbarrow to go on it and Mom was quite satisfied and there were enough old shingles to use for treads. Mom said Thank you for the next three years. Plenty of time to get transitioned into the main house according to plan.

    • @contactjoy4140
      @contactjoy4140 Před 4 lety +3

      Yes, even if steps are there, the door is very close to the edge and navigating opening the door with a bag of groceries, turning to lock/unlock the door, or stepping on a wee bit of ice or rain could create a fall off the deck.
      Better to have a rail to grasp.
      There is a reason for codes.
      Any adult sized person can suffer a serious injury by falling only 18"-20".
      Bill, look at it this way: whatever the distance is from the top of your face plus 18"-20", is how far your face will have momentum to slam against the ground.
      It ain't gonna be pretty.

    • @chrisfry436
      @chrisfry436 Před 4 lety +4

      Right, he should have just wrapped it around, would not have taken that much more wood! I speak from experience, I stumbled a little coming out my door and went over the end of the porch and hit the ground, happened before I could even catch myself, so yes, it should have a rail all around!

    • @ancientsgate
      @ancientsgate Před 4 lety +3

      @@chrisfry436 Wow. Well, you're proof positive that railings are there for a reason! Although Bill talked about code this and code that, I've found that building codes provide for minimum protection, and there's nothing wrong with going beyond them. I would also have extended the railing down to the end of the inclined ramp, no idea why Bill didn't do that, he's leaving his wife and Pops to slide on down the rest of the way without support at the end there, but hopefully they'll both stay inside on iffy days.

The toilet reminds me of a barbecue I went to 40 years ago and the people bought a brand new toilet cleaned it real good, bleached it real good and use it as a punch bowl. They even mounted it on a piece of wood and put a few pieces of linoleum on the wood. In the back of the tank, they put some flowers thinking that might soften the whole thing. But it didn't. Since plants potted in a normal terra cotta planting pot have a hole in the bottom, for the water to drain out, after you water it, (after the water wets the roots), well, if Bill used a toilet as a planter, then how is the water going to drain out?! Wouldn't the plant begin to suffer, and get yellow in it's roots, or other parts of the plant, if it gets too water-logged, due to no water drain-off?

I learned the hard way on wood steps to my house (years ago). the snow barely covered the wood, but I fell down the steps and hurt my back. I was in my mid 40's, young and spry! I would not want to risk it now in my 60's. A good push broom will help keep that 'little bit' of snow off the wood.

    Bill you did a beautiful job on that deck! I love it, it's nice and neat looking! As far as the toilet garden goes I'd have to say no...I've seen those before and they just look tacky. Our house was built in 1952 and believe me, it needs some work. My husband just isn't into that sort of thing. I love everything you've done so far to your cute little place. Great video! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    Ditch the Toilet Bowl - Planter idea !!! It's a bad idea for a man with 99.99% of awesome ideas. Bill will have that home looking like a "show place" in no time flat !!! Good solid structure with Bill & Elizabeth as creative minds -- let the fun begin !!!

    You did a great job on it. When my Mother bought this house I am living in she had someone to build a ramp in the garage to get up into the kitchen. When she passed away 20 years we had irt took down. Now that I have had surgery on both legs I wish it was still there. Have a blessed week.

    I love when I can finally comment. We watch your video but usually on my TV screen . Love that you showed this I am wanting a railing make on my steps here. I have lived here over 35 yrs but it would be so nice for a railing. My grandkids it would help them as well. You did a great job, we so love the 2 of you and all you share but we also all love the same Lord Jesus. Bless you all

    Yes on the toilet bowl flower pot. When you put in the new door you need to put the railing on the rest of the porch as well. I am a lot older than you two and can see a problem with not having it. Also my husband and I both have a habbit of loosing our balance so the other railing will be a help. I love to watch your videos and can't wait to see how the outside looks when the weather warms up . I know Elizibath has already got pland in her head. Please excuse the spelling it has really gotten bad lately

    Continue the deck out under the windows and down to the end of the house. Put your steps in where you said. And then you could put three rocking chairs out there and have a nice place to sit, and if you make it wide enough or deep enough, you can add your barbecue and some sort of small table. It would make a whole nother room or a place to live in great weather. You could even put a small portable fire pit out there.

    This video was impressive to watch!! I kept admiring, and being constantly amazed by Bill's precise workmanship.
    And I like the way he broke it down, step by step, taking us with him on his DIY project of building the ramp.
    Excellent craftsmanship, looks like he knows what he's doing.
    I was surprised to see Bill's father walking up and down the ramp, very spry, and energetic!! Go grandpa! 😊😄
    But what about our dear girl Elizabeth? How is she doing? I hope to see her in yall's next video. PEACE and LOVE❤

      This is a very nice comment! It's friendly, nice, loving, complimentary to Bill, caring towards Elizabeth, she must not have noticed this comment, because I've heard Elizabeth say that she usually gets to all of them, but she hasn't been feeling well, so maybe that's it. But I guess when Elizabeth is gone or not feeling well Bill takes over the comment liking and replying.

    Bill, you are a very talented and skilled man. Interesting how you went right over and in line with the concrete that was already in place. I definitely think the stair idea is good too. I'm curious. Should the railing extend down the incline to the end of the ramp for steadiness? I was thinking with balance concerns, maybe it would be good and look nice.
    I would pass on the toilet planter though. Just sayin'.

      A R, I so love this couple, but I do agree with you on the rail. That thought ran through my head too. It would be just as easy to slip on that last little part. I know I would want it all the way around, even at the top.

      You can reach the railing from the sidewalk before you start up the steps. The problem is that there is nothing down at the end of the ramp to attach a railing post to! I went as far down the ramp as I could with that post, and already, it’s not as sturdy as the other two.
