  • In this experiment I layered a pot with wood chips, rabbit bedding and potting soil. I will do this again. but maybe not reuse potting soil. The reused potting soil can go in the garden beds. blanket flower winter sows very well beautiful. #wintersowing #wintersown #wintersow #gardenexperiment #garden #seedsstarting

    I’ve never understood why with winter sowing you wouldn’t just direct sow… and put something over so that you don’t have to transplant after. I’m so glad you addressed this!

      Because sometimes that would definately work
      But it’s hard to cover stuff you can’t move to cover in the garden
      As long as you can cover it if there’s frost

      I'm glad you are gonna try it. Make sure to water at least once a week especially if you are in a dry climate. I live in Utah. I will be doing more like this all March

    Best tomatoes we ever had were the ones that grew under the rabbit cage.

    I'm finally in a place where I can have a little balcony garden and I've been doing a lot of research. Winter sowing caught my attention but to be honest the amount of jugs and the look of them all wasn't appealing but I also don't have a place inside to start seedlings. I figured I could do what you just showed off with my containers starting soon when my seeds arrive, but it is really nice to see someone else try it out as well.
    I love seeing how casual you've made this, how down to earth and real. A lot of folks make things so complicated or so perfect/pretty that it feels daunting. But putting a plastic bag over a container and checking it every week for a few cold months? That I can do.

    Enjoy your lettuce! Happy little suprises provided by Mother Nature. Your Blanket Flowers will come. Yes, for some seeds, light is important for germination but soil temp is also important. As your pot heats up in the coming days, so will your blanket flowers. I garden this way alot. I hope your followers will give it a try.

    Will try it out. Clever hack. I had saved 9 milk and jug bottles but was feeling queasy thinking about drinking ourselves through another 10 or more. Lol
    However I have plenty of planters and spare plastic and twine. Plus you have more planting surface to work with.

    • @gardenfunwithjane4897

      Yes try it! Find the way you like to do it better. Make sure the plastic is tight so it gives a greenhouse effect.

      I have three dogs so I had to go back and figure out what dog you were talking about. Her name is honey and she is a rescue rover so her breed could be anything but we think she has some golden retriever in her and actually some Chow. She is super sweet and she does have a little bit of feistiness to her but not bad we love our honey girl. She is almost 9 years old.

    It's already mid February here, I wonder if I could use this method to early sow. Maybe not early sow, but get it in the ground and let the timing be more natural. Won't hurt to try.

    So it looks like you did this in January and then open it in April. I have big empty pots sitting on my patio over winter so will try! Can I then transplant lettuce so I can plant summer flowers in pots? I am guessing you have to remove the large piece of plastic each week to water? Dry here too...

    • @gardenfunwithjane4897
      @gardenfunwithjane4897  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I don't take the plastic off until spring. I want the plastic to be tight enough to make a greenhouse effect but it has holes in the top. So I water with a hose or milk jug straight on top and it settles right in. Yes you can plant lettuce first and then either harvest it all or move transplants out and use the pot for more flowers. Hope that helps ❤️
