Dude, I get she the whole siren point is they trick you and all... but seriously, look at her. She was literally *melting* right there, and since then she kept adoring him rather than tempting him. Even the other sirens started climbing on board like they were thinking "wtf is happening, why is she taking so long?"

I love how you can tell Odysseus is not as unaffected by seeing his wife as he sounds.
I love how in scenes he appears younger or as “his ideal self”, like the siren is trying to show him his ideal life and future. It seems to slip when the illusion is broken or he's shifting the conversation. Great idea!

Interesting choice have the weird illusion stuff even effect Odysseus; like just speaking the siren makes him think of a time before everything went to hell, lol. Also, really cool choice to have the sirens literally boarding the ship; adds to threat they present that they don't necessarily NEED men to jump into the water, and I fully get why the crew is ducking out of sight until the right time in that case. Great stuff!
From what i've heard it's more accurate. He had the crew cover their ears and sail past while he just tied himself to the mast so that he physically couldn't jump in

I was just imagining the Siren conjuring up the illusion of toddler Telemachus and thinking "oh this must be his daughter!" Because if the Siren's are able to take on the convincing form of his wife they could do the same with his child. Telemachus was just so adorable as a child they assumed him to a girl :)

Absolutely. It explores this heartbreaking idea of Ody wanting to be affectionate with the siren but needing to remember at the same time who she really is. Like almost letting himself get carried away a bit before pulling himself back to reality.
Like I picture him getting caught up in the image of her and dipping the siren romantically but then pulling away, slightly embarrassed and ashamed.

She probably dealt her whole life with sailors throwing themselves in the sea like horny maniacs just by giving a look at her, and then this guy shows up being all delicate, sweet and dad-of-the-year kind of guy. She must have thought "fuck you sisters, I'm gonna marry this one".

I love odys expression when he saw pene. Like we know he prepared for the sirens but seeing his wife would def still make him emotional. Also the end of the song"the things id do for you" if he wouldn't have known that those were sirens, i bet you he'd jump for her
I absolutely LOVE how subtle it was that the Siren was feeling weak to Odysseus, and that stemmed from the fact that Ody was showing all his love that he had for Penelope onto her look-alike. It seemed as if she knew “he really cares for this person”.
Adding onto that it really felt like instead of the Siren trying to lure in Ody it was the other way around, I could practically feel it when she put the child in Ody’s arms. Him holding the child and the Siren looking so warm and content because he himself was so soft with the kid! And then the subtle eye shift of the child’s ‘human’ eyes to ‘siren’ eyes, as if the child was reminding her what the point of all this was. LOVE IT ❤❤❤
OKEY, BUT THIS IS THE FIRST ANIMATIC THAT I'VE SEEN THAT THE LITTLE "oh no" OF THE SIREN SEEMS LIKE GENUINE ( 1:31 ) AND IM CRYING BECAUSE I REMEMBER THEY KILL THEM ALL 😭
Genuine "Oh no" Is honestly I think a better choice than the eye roll. Remember, the sirens are used to putting up a literal paradise of a front. Plus on some level, they understand how scary poseidon is. It's not hard to fake empathy.
AND It, of course, adds a layer of tragedy in the next song
@@ilyte1 Totally agree: even if she was only faking interest it would have been a better choice. Still, it's definitely dubious how often this particular siren faked her emotions, because of that blown-away expression she has when he touches her chin. She should have known better than thinking a girl may be so pleasently flabbergasted by her partner touching her.
@@loonelytoon6523 I like to think that that was a genuine reaction - like Odysseus' love for his wife is so strong and genuine that it even took aback someone who's used to seducing men.
@@EraofEra Same, this animatic completely changed my view of this song, and even if surely Jorge didn't intended it like this. It makes Different Beast not only brutal, but genuinely painful. Every time I listen to it I'm like: "just bound the sirens and throw them into the water so that they can free themselves only when you are fare away, they won't follow you towards Scylla anyway, but don't kill this creature you just seduced *like Circe was going to do with you* " (this last part is what hits me the most)

Especially when Circe's reason for NOT doing that was explicitly "maybe if I'm kind to you, it'll play a part in the world being kinder as a whole and you'll show mercy to someone else because I showed you mercy". And then instead of that, Different Beast happens
i love the detail of him being tied to the ship and for some reason the rest of the crew hiding below deck is really funny, like im jiust picturing they have the other end of the rope and every few minutes just give it a little tug to snap ody back to reality
Maybe that's why they took a peek above deck, Sirenelope had untied him and they realized there was no one on the other end.

the way you've drawn and animated Odysseus when looks at his 'daughter' at 0:49 is so goddamn sweet- it makes me think he's actually entertaining the idea of a daughter with Penelope, longing and fond. the emotion on his expression is just beautiful

Love the little bit at 0:37 where the Siren get's thrown off and almost touched by the genuine love and affection Odysseus has for his wife almost like how he got Circe to trust him only for the siren to take a beat and come back to themselves and their purpose.
That was actually pretty good! Its quite original, I especially like how the rest of the crew was just hiding under the deck and watching the show!
Love the little bit at 0:37 where it seems like the Siren is a bit thrown off and moved for a moment by the tenderness and genuine love Odysseus has for his wife almost like how he was able to get Circe to trust him for that very same quality before the siren takes a second to remember it's purpose and go back to trying to trick/eat him.

@@Just_a_therian_in_cabin_7 I feel awful telling you that there is at least another animatic of this song where the little siren is seeing being captured (if it helps, they looked much more feral there than here), and some other youtuber is going to animate the follow-up song with at least a couple of teenage sirens being murdered (but he already said he won't show it). Unfortunately this moment, just as many others in the musical, has written angst all over its face, and becomes even worst when animated because you can see more of the sirens and that, like Polyphemus or Circe, they may be magical or monstrous but still have something humane in them. But I have to say the Siren falling for Ody in this animatic here is probably the angstier it would ever get. It's so hard to process he is going to kill her, but it is also so intense and after all it's what the story is about: Ody becoming the worst version of himself.
EDIT: Btw, since I wrote this I think there have been at least other two animatics of this song featuring the little siren, and one even got its follow-up where she clearly got killed, even if it isn't shown.
The little glimpses of how the sirens look is extremely clever. This is how Ody and everyone else most likely sees them, because of the Beeswax, but "Penelope" is who we'd see without a means to block the enchanting voice.

This animatic tore me to shreds. Siren Penelope sewing in the illusion, reminding Odysseus even more of home; Odysseus in the illusion scenes being younger bc he was pretty young when he left Penelope and Telemachus 😭 but also the part with the crew hiding and dipping when they saw Siren Penelope's true form is so funny🤣 (Also I'm a newcomer to your channel but your opening scene with your pen is SO COOL!!)
I've seen a ton of animatics of this song that are very good, but i really love the inclusion of Odyseus seeing "Penelope" and it actually evoking some emotion in him. He hasnt seen her in over a decade, and ive really felt like that line "dont you miss me? More than you know." Would come with some tears or something.

Love how you kept the detail of him still being tied to the post in the original story! Also loved the bit where we saw Eurylochus looking up from below deck looking nervous rather that’s in fear for themselves or for Odysseus!
The loose hair in combination with the glitching and the invading sirens is majestic and terrifying

to be fair, it's mostly because, in Epic, there's no need. Ody has also covered his ears in beewax, so he doesn't need to be tied up. Still a neat detail, though!

The designs of the sirens, the crew hiding under the deck, Eu being worried about Odysseus even though he knows things are going to plan, the flicker of the illusions, then the sirens climbing up behind 'Penelope' to represent Scylla, and then just your wonderful art throughout it all. So much to love in one video
I love that in these animatics the Sirens disguise starts to flicker and become less perfect the longer Odysseus refuses to enter the water. Perhaps it's cause her skin is drying out and it's hard to maintain a disguise when she's dried out?

The fact that Ody changes hairstyle, showing a more “perfect” version of himself, how Penelope slowly, during the end, transforms into her siren form, THE EXPRESSIONS OF EVERY CHARACTER… god, I love this so much (also I love Odysseus’ long hair lol). I saw how Odysseus was tied to a pole, in one of the versions of the myth Odysseus actually ties himself while they passed by the sirens so he can listen to their songs. Love it! I love the many interpretation the Epic fandom makes! IT'S SO FUN SEEING EACH LITTLE EASTER EGG THAT EITHER CONNECTS TO THE MYTH ITSELF OR CREATES A BIGGER IMPACT! AH! In love.
I love the little details sprinkled around. Him being tied with a rope, the slit in the 'daugthers' eyes, the crew noping out of there, the sirens design is really cool to and I just love the style of this!

OOF, I absolutely adore this! First off, i love your design for Siren!Penelope, both in the illusion form and the fishy form. i also love Odysseous, and how once the ilusion sets in he becomes younger, I catched it in the second time rewatching, and it's such a nice touch! I love the way you draw anamtomy of the body and hands. The crew waiting beneath the floor was fun, and a good way to fully portray the true form of penelope. I also love how in this animatic instead of being below the water, siren!Penelope was already on the ship, as it to portray a more homely scene to lure them into lowering their guard. I also adore the "daughter", they were adorable and i wonder if they were a siren as well. An instersting idea brought in the shot with the crew is that the beeswax means the ilusion isn't working, so odyssoues is just REALLY good at roleplaying. The siren also appears to get a bit too into the role, a lot of animatics have siren!Penelope be bored when tricking him, stating the thing about scylla but the sirens expressions 1:55 seems to imply they're legitimatelly shocked at her answer. Oh yeah, i also love your scylla design! I adore everyones expressions thought the whole thing, and the way the ilusion somewhat glitches out at 2:25 before setting back in. I love the final shot with odysseous and his sword, you are awesome!.

This might be my favorite Suffering animatic. Your Sirenelope design is BEAUTIFUL and I love how Ody does seem somewhat entranced by her, only to remind himself it’s not his wife. I also love how flirty this one is verses other portrayals where it’s pretty obvious the siren is not genuine. Love it!!!

there's so much to talk about here!!! the way he starts crying the moment he sees her?? the rope tying her to the mast, which has to be my favourite way of doing this scene. the way he sheds, like, ten years when he holds his 'daughter,' representing the chance for a family that he lost to the war. the confusion on Sirenelope's face when Odysseus refuses her. the sheer romance of their interaction. this is so good

OUGHHH THE EXPRESSIONS ARE SO GOOD. Odysseus crying at seeing his wife, the Sirens waiting below, Siren Penelope's face when he cups it! ODYSSEUS APPEARING YOUNGER WHEN SEEING THE KID AND HER?!!! My heart. Also fhdhshsh the crew popping up deck, seeing the Siren, and going 'nope'. I love the others climbing onto the ship and their faces when Scylla is mentioned, as well as the brief glimpse of her in this! And Siren qualities popping up as the song goes on, like the spikes, ears and eyes and the glitches!!! This is so good!!!! Also OUGHH the sword, which means he has to stab the thing that looks like his wife.

Appreciate Ody being tied up at the start. It's a detail I love to see in animatics for this song.
Something I havent seen anyone else mention: whether it was intentional or not, every siren (including Scylla) has a strand/chunk of hair hanging in front of their face from the water. Siren!Pen has this in her disguise as well, but it isnt affected by the water. Brilliant I tell you ❤
I kind of liked how for the beginning part of the song, it's the siren closing the distance and Odysseus consistently stepping away, but when he asks her about what route to take, he's the one stepping close and the siren's the one turning away to answer. Combined with the fact that it looks like the siren's face does turn sad hearing his situation and even right before she answers his question, it feels like this version's siren shows genuine sympathy for him, even if she is still going to eat him.
I saw a lot of other animatics show the siren as uninterested in Odysseus' plight or taking joy in telling him, so this was an interesting interpretation.
Though, this siren does go back to smiling as she tells him the answer's "the lair of Scylla", but I liked how serious her face was while initially giving the answer. Because even the sirens take gods' wrath seriously I guess. And when she goes back to smiling, I feel like maybe it's more relief because facing Scylla is bad enough that some people might choose to die here than take that path, so in a way, the siren might still feel assured that she has her prey or that being eaten is the "better" option/a mercy for Odysseus.
Then again, I could be entirely wrong and she's just a really good actress committing to the bit.
UGH! I love all the subtleties here! I also love the moment the other sirens appear behind PeneloSiren when she talks about Scylla. Here other heads trying to take the opportunity to monch on some Greek men. I ALSO LOVE HOW SHINY EYED THE SIRENS ARE!!!
Oh wow the details, I think this is one my top suffering animatics. It just flows so well, and the subtle shifts ofemotions on penelope is just great. Didnt even notice that cool detail of oddy getting younger when penelope tries using a mirage of sorts to lure him into a “pre mosnter era” or “greeting the world with open arms mindset” Also the crew hiding there is hilarious.
Just a fun thing to drop by here! The entire animatic odysseus never looked away from penelope (apart from putting down the kid) because he’s reading her lips ^^ that’s why his sometimes ‘off’ look was on purpose and to answer some headcannons

Oh, that makes sense. I thought he was affected just enough to see her as Penelope but not to believe she was actually her, because he was so close that some enchanting soundwaves should have reached him. But I don't really know how proficient beeswax is in isolating sounds, so he could have totally heard nothing at all.
I loved the detail of his hands being tied to the post because in the actual book, this is when he is traveling through the sirens and he really wanted to hear their voices so he told his men to tie him to the mast and put wax in their ears so they wouldn't die.
This is the most detailed animatic so far. I've been binging.

i love this interpretation of suffering a lot because in different beasts ody says “you oretended to be my wife so i just played along” so i like how when he first saw the siren he was shocked and sad i think its very realistic

My theory with the daughter is that the Sirens can only pick up on what people want, so she interpreted a desire for a daughter as a desire for a person who already exists, instead of wanting to go home and have more children with Penelope.

I want it too but I also don't. The siren seems to have gotten the hugest crush on him because of how gentle and caring he was. He even pulled out his sword *right in front of her* and she didn't even notice, still tenderly taking his whole frame up. The continuation of that will be *extremely* painful.
