    We recently discovered that most of our viewers leave within the first 30 seconds of our videos. We decided to ditch a drawn out intro, and on some videos. Added a highlight reel. This has worked wonders. Thanks vidiq!

    What annoys me is that some youtubers will just talk for a really long time saying why and how their video is going to help you/be entertaining, but they havent actually gotten to that stuff, they simply just are talking about it. They essentially just made a really bad intro. Whats worse is when the same youtuber says the exact same things about saying how good their video is in EVERY video.
    To fix this just keep it simple and short. Deliver the value right away instead of wasting time saying how your video is going to educate/entertain. Yes you can do that but dont make it longer than it needs to be. Like look at what vidiq just did right in this very video, they didnt waste time and got straight to the point.

    Top tip : to balance your audio, get a compressor vst for your editing software, i recommend tdr Molotok, a quick CZcams tutorial will show you how to use that apply that to your Audio and it'll sound balanced
    If you want more flamboyance you can get a dynamic eq and a tonal eq, I recommend tdr nova and ignite amps pteqx-1

    For me, the most maddening aspect of beginner CZcamsr "advice" videos is they are not at the beginner level.
    For instance, I started out with VideoPad because all of the "advice" gurus said it was the easiest to learn and use. Well, easy doesn't mean good. A good example of this is where you talk about listening to your video for audio quality. In VideoPad, I can barely hear myself over the background music (on sound level 2) but after it is exported the music is barely noticeable. On sound level 7, after exporting, I can barely hear myself over the music. So, the video software is crap.
    The same is true for cuts, B rolls , etc. The software I have doesn't allow that.
    The trouble is, whenever I have listened to the "gurus," their advice has backfired. I even have a saying on my channel, "CZcamsrs lie." It is meant to alert them that CZcams content can't be trusted and to be weary.
    We small channels need to know the best equipment and software systems for the money. With that said, you expert gurus that we're turning to also need to realize we are not getting paid, we don't have much money to put into equipment/software, and we don't have the skill set (or possibly the equipment) to know what a B roll is or how to use it, camera angles, etc.

      So true bro. Just in case you're still looking for a free video editor, use VN editor on mobile for ease of use, or if you want a good, yet free editor use Davinci Resolve.. the learning curve is insane, but once you master it, nothing beats davinci. It's a Hollywood level editor for sure

    • @TheChartreuseLeprechaun
      @TheChartreuseLeprechaun Před rokem

      Yeah. Always start with better stuff and accept the learning curve that goes with it. For editing, I started with Lightworks because Davinci scared me. Let me just say Lightworks is "ok." With a "light" background in music and audio, I knew what I wanted in both the video and audio. But, I couldn't get it. After about a year of fighting various issues and I switched. Still ticked at myself for not starting on Davinci.

    i do struggle to find the balance with "dead space" and pauses, cos people keep saying cut it all out, then as you say, it has an unnatural flow, some types of vid can do that fast past thing, but i think going forward for me, i will try leave some natural pauses in, not all, cos y'know know! too much is too much!
    it is definitely tricky to find the balance...
    i do find some channels with their transitions - the zoom in and out fast - and all those things, send me dizzy, i don't enjoy that experience as a watcher, so i would not do that as a creator.
    admittedly some sort of something would work for me to create, but not shouty fast paced and loud!

      I think I would rather watch a Calvin The Unfindable video. Pauses are good. I paused in my last video a few times. I noticed that I do it on purpose. But I do cut exactly after giving you only a split second to see what or why I paused.

    Something that makes as a viewer to leave a video right away is when it is shaky. If the camera is moving way too much, I’m out. Makes my head hurt.
    When I’m making videos, audio for me is tricky - I film in my yard so I battle outdoor noises like loud neighbors, traffic, the AC running, planes overhead, other dogs barking, etc.

    • @Dancing_Alone_wRentals
      @Dancing_Alone_wRentals Před 2 lety

      I've embraced the loud noises. The little red button on my camera controls the weather...specifically the wind. There was a video of mine 100th...I intentionally wanted the wind. Since that time the wind never went away....but that is okay. People don't watch my videos...so they don't even know the wind is there.
      I do have the shaky camera often, however that is something I would eliminate if I could. Practice...practice and more practice.

    A lot of great points here. Especially the "killing your darlings." They use that in novel writing too. Anyway, I had a video that was over an hour long, which I knew no one would watch. I wanted it to be 20 minutes or less. There was a lot of detail in it. At the end was a 10 minute recap on the whole video. That, plus a few needed points was the final product. I record behind the desk, in front of the desk, and in an arm chair across the room. It requires recording stuff a couple times, occasionally 3 times. Now, It can be kind of a pain in tedium. But, it's not hard to adopt to, and it's worth it. Side note: I don't do a lot of on camera work. But, even if I did, I think I still would use this approach, just do it differently.

    You have to appreciate the irony when discussing the importance of good audio, to have a B-Roll of someone pointing a Blue Yeti towards him when this mic is a side address.

    I’m starting to grasp editing more and more. After nearly 100 videos (including my shorts) I think it’s coming together now. I just started to dispense using transitions and for my last few videos I’m just using short clips with jump cuts. I think I will also quit using an intro clip and just get to it. My goal is to create shorts no longer than 40 seconds and longer videos no longer than 8 - 12 minutes. I have a myriad of things to learn but I’m grasping the concepts quicker these days.

    Bad audio mixing is definitely the thing that makes me run. Either too low audio that makes me pump up the volume on a device, or too high volume that peaks repeatedly, or the worst sin of them all - a combination of too low voice-over volume and too high music volume so no matter where your volume slider is at, the listening experience is not ideal.

    I create on my laptop with Windows Video Editor and Clipchamp (I can't handle the more technical stuff and my laptop can't run it!). When I do a ding or a pop etc, it sounds fine on my laptop but later I listen to it on my phone and it's much louder than anything else. No one has ever complained so maybe it's my phone audio settings, but I don' t know and I find it annoying.

  • @LivingtheLaptopLifestyle

    This is fine and dandy but I have 0 clue how to do all that editing and I have 0 interest in learning how. I simply sit in front of my phone and record and when I finish I hit stop. lol.... Don't have the time nor the patience or the interest to learn all the editing. Editing is a full time job for someone. Easier just to keep pumping out content.

    Oh my word, I was so bad with my audio in the past, but I'm getting better. I would turn down the volume in one section of the video, turn it up in another because I thought the difference would make sense and not "assault" my audience's ears. Well, it helps to play back what you record, so you can repair what you've done. I used to use the audio recorder in Windows (just starting out at the time). Then I went to a headset with detachable microphone. Finally, I went with a separate mic, but it catches "ambient" noises, so I'm waiting on a noise shield/windshield to help deaden that unwanted low "hiss". I suppose it's better late than never, and you really do have to experiment with what you are doing. I absolutely love your channel! RIBBIT!

    So the list to being a good editor
    1. Edit as much as possible
    2.Story is king find the story your video will attract some audience (book recommendations Save the Cat, Cut to the Monkey, and the Art of the Cut)
    3. Make sure your audio is good if you want to know where it should be on CZcams it’s -14 LUFs that will make sure your viewer doesn’t have to turn you up and down all the time
    4. Organize all your assets and files so you can edit faster
    5. Don’t just put everything in a timeline and trim it down make a select reel first of all you favorite shots then use them to build a story

    Gaming video's I don't colour grade and it's not always possible to B-roll it, but I do minorly move the voice audio around as long as the content was provided to me with multiple audio tracks (usually audio 1 is voice and audio 2 is gaming sounds) but not everyone shoots it that way.

    Excellent recommendation, not to mention awesome vidIQ SEO score on this one (91.4%)??!!! WOW!! The best tips for me to were to edit down, don't overuse the transitions (I am an animator/video special effects specialist by day, so this hits home close to home), graphical consistency and the best tip is color grading!! I use Adobe After Effects (by day and for CZcams) to edit levels, hues and vignettes using Lumetri is invaluable for me! Thanks for the great tips and inspiration! X

    Edit? Ummm... I just use ScreenCast to capture my Chromebook's screen. No edit, no color grading. Not even adjusting proper resolution.
    I did get headphones + microphone combo, and recently developed a consistent Title screen using Slides.
    Intros are basically 30 seconds speech, and no B roll videos whatsoever.
    I hope that's not too bad. At least, I think the addition of puzzles in my daily chess videos gets better hits from search engines.
    And, I need to say less "And" in my videos. Working on it!

  • @KingBasieSims4

    I was rewatching my vids and I have asked viewers to give thier input especially with my audio and people kept telling me my audio is fine (not on the vids I mean friends who check out my vids). One video of mine I had to turn the volume down but it didn't help because I realised I made the background music higher than my voice over. And in one vid you could hear the computer fan was as loud as my voice over and basically covering my background music. Audio editing is still a steep learning curve for me. And doesn't help my software is now problematic and can't find one that's as good so my channel is basically dead, just as I was learning more.

    • @Dancing_Alone_wRentals
      @Dancing_Alone_wRentals Před 2 lety

      Too bad about that midroll rule. I wish they would okay shorter videos for you. I look for 3 to 5 minute videos. If someone posts 12 minutes, I skip over it. Now if it is a how to video...or a channel that is building something etc, I'll watch that....but new to me channels...won't watch shorts or videos over 3 or 4 minutes.
