- After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the VW Club of Hawaii finally got the green light to bring back Hawaii’s “happiest VW week” in 2022. The 20th Annual Shaka Weekend made history, as the club filled the iconic Aloha Stadium with hundreds of VWs and bid farewell to this local landmark, which will be torn down in 2023.
The VW Club of Hawaii which promotes the festivities was founded in 1997 by a group of friends. The original group had been enjoying the VW scene in Oahu Island starting in the late 1970s-early ’80s. Todd Matsumoto (the club founder and president) and executive board members Angie Cariaga, Gordon Ortiz, Richard Carvalho, Geri Salvador, Hannibal Cabacungan, and Sal Acosta passionately serve the VW community in Hawaii, bringing fun and exciting activities throughout the year. The club celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022. Todd is also widely known as a legend in the Hawaiian VW scene for legalizing VW-based fiberglass-bodied dune buggies and kit cars in the State of Hawaii.
Aloha Stadium will be demolished later in 2023 after 55 years of history. It hosted 35 NFL Pro Bowl games, concerts by Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, The Rolling Stones, Bruno Mars, Eminem, and countless artists. The stadium gave the VW Club of Hawaii a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gather Volkswagens inside the stadium before being torn down.
One hundred twenty-three lucky enthusiasts and their VWs drove into the stadium’s infield at 10:30 AM, and we made history. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Great to see some of the old Hawaiian Style is still alive and well. Wide 5 Centerlines and even a few white window seals and some car name graphics. Too cool!
awesome event with some sweet dubs
I'm just finishing up watching the video. This has been one of the coolest, if not the coolest, videos from Hot VWs. The footage, the cars, the people, the music and that wonderful Hawaiian scenery. I love it!
I am happy that you filmed this in my home state ❤️. I am sorry that I missed this opportunity to attend.
🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Cool I’m in Australia we enjoy our early vw Aircooled vehicles, and so thanks for sharing, I quite enjoyed it and would have liked to be there also participating 😊😊God bless
Far out! Great VW's and the background makes it that much better ! Thx-
What’s not to love. So cool, great cars ladies and gents, respect.
Awesome VW event. A paradise and a haven at the same time❤
I've loved the Hawaiian Cal-look since the '80s. They are still going strong! There are some unbelievably beautiful cars out there.
Good to see Hawaii still leading the way with its own distinctive style in custom VWs. great show!
Beautiful! Old school aloha!
Makes me miss leaving Hawaii. Such a beautiful placeand the love of VWs.
Wonderful event. Growing up in the Caribbean I can say we know how to do VWs right. Then I got to visit CA and see where the Cal look originated. Then spent time in Florida that has its own East coast flavor. But when I got to Hawaii I saw a lot of cool first time things like white body & window rubber, etched glass, extra deep dish wheel center caps with knock offs and lots of candy and pearl paint. Lots of creativity. But even simple things like lahaula mat door panels and the night marcher gourds with the mohawk feathers hanging from the rearview mirrors was fun to see. Keep on Buggin' Aloha State🤙
Awesome making me homesick!!!!

@31:30 The story on the single cab is sooooo incorrect. Single cabs have been in production from the beginning of T2 production. Barn door smooth gate single cabs still exist. Also the picture he is referring to is actually a later BAY WINDOW BUS!!! The missing semaphore is due to the restoration house doing a poor job. Big story along with a big price on a franken bus
Great, do they not realize football players will now slip all over the oil that will now be on the field? Lol
The final sporting event in the Aloha Stadium was in 2021. We were blessed to have a historic VW event before its deconstruction for a new stadium.
