    Chad will also be Chad. He is a salesman because he's made his company from the ground up. He's also a music lover and an audiophile. His passion will show but his interviews will always feel like an infomercial. You just can't split your nature like that. I really enjoyed the video and loved his passion and sincerity.

    Given his strong market position, if he set the standard for labelling/declaring full source to package provenance in a really consistent and transparent manner he would leave a really positive and lasting legacy beyond the records themselves. I think most of us would love him for that.

    • @preservedmoose
      @preservedmoose Před 2 lety +1

      He already has excellent labelling. If it is from tape then it is marked so on the plastic outer.

    • @lokitio
      @lokitio Před 2 lety +3

      @@preservedmoose no, it doesn't say how it was transferred from the tape nor does it declare the remaining steps until the record is pressed. Same with MoFi. This is the essence of the transparency problem. In a video yesterday, Chad said he would be willing to change his labelling to become more transparent, but he has not said how or when.

    • @preservedmoose
      @preservedmoose Před 2 lety

      @@lokitio he has explained many times and shown in many videos that he is using a full analogue chain unless the source is digital or they can only get digital. Then it does not have the tape symbol on the cover.

    • @lokitio
      @lokitio Před 2 lety +1

      @@preservedmoose That's what MoFi used to say, and its not transparent labelling. You can't go to a store, pick up the record, and see that provenance at a glance. So, it's not good enough labelling, not after what happened at MoFi. Nobody's saying it's not analogue, just to label that source to package chain transparently to to restore confidence and set a much-needed standard for the industry.

    You really can't fault the quality of Analogue Productions. I've always felt they managed to nail a very natural, musical sound on their reissues (not hyped by heavy handed eq) and at a fair price. QRP pressing is just the very best in my experience as well so you get the great mastering and transfer process and a great pressing with quality packaging...I just wish they had a more titles available.

    Hey Mazzie i have got to hand it to you, since the beginning of the pandemic when I started watching CZcams videos, you have the most diverse, well produced and thought out vinyl related videos of them all. The most prolific to boot. I find most of them very informative and assist in potential purchases I might make. I am in your age group and have been buying records for over 50 years. Thanks for tip on those record separators made in San Francisco. Keep up the good work. Hope to see you at Pacific Audio Show this weekend.

    Nice wrap up Mazzy ! I also learned that not everything is 100% analog, AP is publishing while the name of Chad’s company is still Analog Prod! Sometimes it gets a bit forgotten that 99% of current music production is digitally recorded and produced with a bit analog tape saturation in mixing sum or analog summing in mixing desk (instead mixing digitally in DAW). Recording by tape is in fact the super rare exception as done e.g with Keith Richard‘s or Tool‘s last record. Maybe this is the reason, why AP is not putting out more „modern“ music such as Beck or Weezer.

    One amazing thing with acoustic sounds is their customer service. I had bad surface noise on one song on strange days and they instantly sent me 2 replacement disc's no questions asked. Then I had a massive scratch on soft parade and I felt terrible about having to ask for another replacement and same thing they sent me a replacement right away, no questions asked. Their customer service is amazing and they're so kind to deal with. While mofi would constantly send me seem splits and never replace them. I'd be stuck with a massively damaged strictly limited vinyl at full price or nothing and pay to get my money back. It got so bad I had to order 2 of each to make sure I don't get a seem split. While Acoustic sounds replaces everything.

    • @Groover71
      @Groover71 Před 2 lety

      You realize seam splits can happen after they leave the shop right? Not saying they shouldn’t replace them, just saying you can’t assume the splits happened in their shop, they saw it, and said “screw it we’re gonna send anyway”. A record being scratched up is a whole other story.

    • @playbackamusicloversjourne8620
      @playbackamusicloversjourne8620 Před 2 lety

      Yeah, can't say that's my experience. In Canada you need to order more product to get them to ship you the replacement disc. To keep it short, if they send you a faulty pressing you have to buy some other album & pay for shipping on the first item to have them ship you your replacement disc in that same shipping box. Guess Chad doesn't like Canadians. I will say I'm generally very happy with their product, just not their return policy.

      Unfortunately I've had 3 records from the Bill Evans 22LP set from 2017 badly needing a replacement (especially Everybody Digs Bill Evans, ultra noisy). Paid 600€ for this one when it came out after having waited for a repress for 7 years, and I'm still waiting for my replacement from Acoustic Sounds! Now that it's out of print of course it's a good excuse not to send them (because anyway they told me the only way to get replacement to Europe is to place an order and ship it with it), and an even better excuse now that a $900 inflated set is coming soon .....

    Hi Mazzy, thank you for all your very informative and entertaining videos. You are right of course, it is all about the music. I particularly love two of your mentions here, the Nat Cole and the Ry Cooder/VM Bhatt.
    You may also know two of my all time faves, ''Nat King Cole Sings, The George Shearing Quintet Plays'' and another Water Lily Acoustics album, ''Music For The Motherless Child'' by Martin Simpson and Wu Man.
    I grew up with the Nat Cole and have known it for just about 60 years❤ We had two copies, the original mono (worn out totally) and a stereo British ''Music For Pleasure'' budget label reissue . You can hardly hear the piano at all, on the mono, but the stereo....wow. You can get 7 of the stereo mixes on ''Nat King Cole, The One and Only'' (1996 EMI CD )
    If you like the Ry Cooder, you will love the Martin Simpson/Wu Man 🪕🪕
    Thanks again, for all the music, all the very best from 'Good Ole Blighty',
    Steve🙂❤☮

    Been buying records from Chad and company since 2002. Rarely have I heard a recording that didn’t measure up. My Best of Sam Cooke’s - a couple of original compilations in the early 60s. The UHQR throw away effect was classic. Damn getting a Bill Evans from a friend, that box is classic and I can’t understand why people complain that the price went up to $900 on a 22 lp 45 rpm audiophile set of one of the stellar jazz artists (ever hear of inflation?). I would love to see Rickie Lee Jones Naked Songs acoustic live release (only done on cd).

    I anticipate a full pivot of MoFi fans who's favorite records were MoFi, to Chad now being the fave. I'm getting a little burnt out on the audiophile reissues and personally, will just seek out physical copies of music I love, which will more than likely not be covered as an "audiophile" release. In fact, I'd say not one audiophile pressing even makes my top 20 favorite records I own.

I’m also not a fan of the boxes but it gives even more protection and that I like. He’s an actual fan of music in an industry that is cynical, so much so that you get the feeling that these suits actually hate music and the musicians that make it. This is my soul food and to have a steward looking after it’s reproduction makes the heart warm.

    If I may tell a somewhat long story Mazzy just to highlight that people often act with the best of intentions but may simply be unaware of what has gone before. I'm an audio engineer, have been for a very long time. This doesn't make me an expert, it just means it's what I do for a job, but I guess it might mean that I know some stuff that others would simply have no reason to know. When CD was first released, and for perhaps 10 years afterwards, my local "hi-fi" shop condemned digital audio outright as, pretty much, a "pile of junk." They sold turntables and other analogue "stuff." One of the ways they used to demo the systems was to use BBC Radio 3 off air, this is the BBC's classical music station and at that time it was producing recordings or live output of the very highest quality using analogue tape machines and analogue sound desks (often designed specifically for the job by people such as Rupert Neve). This analogue source was compared to CDs and those with golden ears would sit around and extoll the qualities and advantages that analogue had over the digital source. As an audio engineer I, and some of my colleagues, found such demos and the comments made during them extremely interesting because we knew that the analogue BBC Radio 3 programme material was actually sent to the transmitter network using NICAM circuits, basically this was a 14 bit digital audio transmission system. Things are not always what they seem and what people hear seems to be very strongly influenced by what they think they should be hearing. Despite my getting paid to hear stuff I'm no different to anyone else in this respect and I've made some pretty stupid mistakes based on what I believed I should be hearing rather than what I must actually have been hearing. I'm not making any big point here other than, perhaps, that people should just value stuff they like no matter how it got there, or what someone else says about it.

The most notable being Chad A/B comparison listening to Steely Dan-Can't Buy A Thrill with a test pressing. Others saw artwork being put together for Rush's first LP, and even though it may have been blurred out, looks like some Bob Marley is out there as well. I remember when Chad came out with the Fantasy (Prestige/Riverside/etc) 45 RPM Series, and later the Blue Note 45 Series... seemed like everyone was on board criticizing Chad/Analouge Productions for the poor-quality covers and expensive $50.00 price tag for the 2LP sets.... Wow, has that story changed...

    • @michaelcannon3978

      The criticism about the covers was justified when those records were compared to the Music Matters 45 series that were coming out at the same time. Those AP 45 records are absolutely wonderful, but…those covers are nothing special. Music Matters made everyone step their game up when it comes to the presentation! And now AP are doing it better than everybody. Funny how it all worked out… :)

    Yes Mazzie, I also have that great sam cooke greatest hits (and it sounds great), but I did think it was AAA when I got it and it wasn't, nor was I able to find on their site that this was a digital release - but that aside was it sounds really really great, but I would have liked to have been told it was DSD. I will also mention that on the AP website under this Sam Cooke greatest hits there was a review praising this was an all analog pressing and no mention was made to correct this from AP

    Maybe the present-day "Mobile Fidelity" should be refered to as "Mobile Fidelity, Mark 2" (I.E. the company since Music Direct bought the Mobile Fidelity name & logo). But, it should be noted that even the original, real "Mobile Fidelity" (whose vinyl was pressed in Japan on JVC Super Vinyl) had some occasional controversies over the first generation authenticity of some titles. In retrospect, their L.P. of "King Crimson's "In The Court of The Crimson King" couldn't have been the the original master tapes (which weren't located until the 21st century) and two of the titles in Mobile Fidelity's Beatles series(one of them "Let It Be") were described in EMI paperwork as "Corrected Copy Tape". and the "Magical Mystery Tour" album was 5th generation copies. The source that Mobile Fidelity used was EMI/UK's copy of Capitol's copy (which was itself a collection of copies, with 3 songs in Duophonic fake stereo)
    But certain titles released by Mobile Fidelity Mk.2, such as "Dire Straits-Brothers in Arms" and "Donald Fagen-The Nightfly" were. FROM THE OUTSET DIGITAL RECORDINGS. The multitracks and mixdown masters were digital. Why anyone would want to own those albums on vinyl is beyond me.

    I've always been more of fan of what Chad does than MoFi (only have 2 MoFis but heaps of Analogue Productions/Acoustic Sounds series releases), particularly since he produces great quality product with prices that I wouldn't say are cheap but are not excessive, and with production runs that are large enough for the demand (although the pressing capacity does seem to be an issue). I wholeheartedly agree with you though that his taste in music sometimes results in the titles chosen for release to be a bit vanilla, but I was heartened to see him add Pharoah Sanders' Karma to the Acoustic Sounds Series recently even though I get the impression it is not really music that he likes to listen to.

    I hope he can repress many of the old classic records titles. Like everyone clamors for led zepplin but there's so many great ones like the who reissues, all the stellar jazz titles, hendrix, crosby stills nash and young solo albums, the live Bob dylan boxsets, zappa hot rats, hell even stuff like dido(life for rent is like $400, no angel like $250). I was lucky to buy a Diana krall xmas songs from the owners collection. I love the cover and it sounds great(I have a red copy, kept the collection one sealed). It's framed in my room and one of my favorite display pieces(she's smokin on that cover!). I wish I was able to get some more but they were so expensive like quadrophenia clarity sold for like $600. Who and who's next were outrageous too. I was gonna get a clarity allman filmore east for $100 but stuck with my pink capricorn. Same with bridge over troubled water one was on clarity for $100 but I waited and the dude raised it to $150. Some people say it's superior to the mofi onestep and that the 45 version was too good where it revealed recording issues too much. I really want the solsbury hill test pressing too but it's too much for me. I got a zepplin stairway test pressing that sounds awesome. I got Pete Townsend scoop for $10 and even that's awesome.
    I know there was quality control issues with the 200g but classic records may just be my favorite audiophile brand. It's a shame they closed. I get shivers listening to life for rent and no angel, even though it's just mundane early 00s pop. But her voice just sounds so real. Its such an experience i almost tear up im not even being dramatic. It's truly unbelievable the quality of those pressings. As a 90s kid hearing white flag, thank you, life for rent, and dont leave home with such detail was a nostalgia overload. But it was so good it was like the first time. I was so lucky to get a mint life for rent for cheap with only a tiny seem split and a beat up cover but perfectly mint vinyl no angel for less than $100. There must be some rights issue at play because it doesn't make sense that Chad doesn't produce more of these gems that sell for $300-500. The few he brought back are way less exciting like the Sarah Mclaughlin ones, though he did have the auqualubg uhqr and come away with me. It makes no sense not to bring back the who titles and zep but I heard Jimmy page is obsessed with his poor remasters so it has to be licensing issues. But still they could print so much money. I wish he'd repress the amazing hendrix singles sets in mono and stereo. The hendrix estate is obviously okay with working with him. Those sets were so cool, especially the first one which looks like a mini amp.
    It's so crazy how high the classic records prices are now. My dad had all 4 of the led zepplin ones but never really listened to them. He was of the old school mindset that reissues suck. He bought them after they closed for only like $50 each. In 2011ish they still were only like $100 and he had to sell them. Now they're like $300-500 each it's utterly insane. Why keep the greatest reissues ever from the masses? Why leave all that money on the table? The saddest part is theres so many amazing records that have only been pressed by classic records, like the BBC live zepplin box, dido life for rent, Diana kralls from this moment on(idk why thats not AP yet with all the jazz he sells), and a bunch more I'm forgetting right now. Classic records is one of the best audiophile brands ever in terms of selection. Possibly the best. Seeing as they're pressing Jethro Tull stuff that we're also classic records they still have rhe rights to many titles. So I just hope they can get some pressed under analogue productions.
    The problem with AP for me is that the selection is limited to what Chad likes. The doors and beach boys titles are no brainers and some of the best music I ever heard. But he's seriously lacking in terms of legendary popular titles. His blues, soul and jazz selection is insane, but I just wish he'd get some of the big names going like the who, zepplin, more hendrix and Jethro Tull, Allman bros, CSNY, and add more variety like dido or other pop stuff. Now that gen x and 90s kids are in their 30-40s itd be insane to see some AP grunge titles like Nirvana and pearl jam. I'd love to see audiophile oasis but due to compression baked into the tapes that'll never happen. But there's so much 90s music that if given the AP treatment would fly off the shelves. Hey even try some classic hip hop like mofi did with run dmc. Alot of hip hop vinyl doesnt make sense to me personally but viewing forums and vinyl buying groups hip hop vinyl is massive with kids today. They'll drop $75 retail on a regular poorly made pressing, so they'd go nuts for the AP treatment..
    Buying classic records was Chad's best move. But I wish he'd utilize the catalogue alot more. There's some serious gems and he's probably only reissued like 1-5% as AP. If it's not a rights issue or the bands unwilling to allow him to press I just don't understand why he won't put out more classic records stuff. It's in way more demand than many of the jazz pressings he's putting out. I love jazz but like they'll make 45rpm, 33rpm and rhen acoustic sounds series pressings of so many records that already sound amazing. I love his dedication to old blues and soul but so many will sit on the site hardly being sold yet hell repress them. I just hope now that he sees mofi customers flocking to him that he'll broaden his horizons a bit and presses less what he likes and more what his customers like. Sure I loved the hendrix and aqualung uhqr but we need more full campaigns like the doors and beach boys reissues. Those are some of my favorite records in my whole collection. I always liked the doors but AP made me absolutely love them and realize how many hits they really had. He even made me a huge soft parade fan. All of them sound stunning and there's so many bands deserving of that treatment. I don't understand why zep and who rights holders won't allow them to be pressed by AP. Unless they want to keep selling crappy reissues every few years and don't want there to be a definitive edition. Idk but I just hope we can see most of the classic records catalogue one day soon.
