  • The title isn't misleading. I actually think the third game in the series is better than the first 2. An opinion I didn't always hold, but that's because I didn't play DKC 3 growing up. Hope you enjoy the video, this one's a bit quicker since I didn't really have any nostalgia or memories for it which cut out a large chunk of my usual script. Thanks for watching!

I'm one of the few who consider this a favorite or improvement in the trilogy. I feel that the bonuses were utilized better than the previous entries. Like the DK Coins being more grounded yet fairly hidden (Hell I love the green banana challenge). The unique anomaly that rarely happens to port conversions like this is having two different soundtracks. Both Evelin Fischers and David Wise did a great job on composing this game and I love both the SNES and GBA versions. The bosses were more intimidating and creative. I'd go back to this any day to 103% this game for a good sweat.

I'm a sucker for a great alpine setting, so DKC3 has an atmosphere to it that I just love. I think it has just as many pros and cons as the first two games. The hate is over-exaggerated; many just parrot whatever they heard in a video. Like when JonTron greatly exaggerated Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts and everyone was acting like it was some video game atrocity...
And now, more people are vocal and are declaring, "Actually, Nuts and Bolts is pretty fun. It's not a classic BK title, but it's actually pretty alright."
And DKC3 is pretty darn alright, too.

Dude, if I made a top 20 games I've played in my life, Nuts & Bolts would be on that list. Building Vehicles to overcome challenges was so fun, trying to see what kind of wacky contraption I could fabricate was a source of many enjoyable hours, I also enjoyed seeing familiar characters in an unfamiliar world, seeing them re-interpreted in the games unique artstyle was entertaining to see. (I mean... I can somewhat understand where People are coming from when they say it "looks bad" but most 90s cartoon are far more unappealing yet isn't a deal-breaker. Nuts & Bolts looks never bothered me and was very much a non-issue personally.) I've seen People compare this game to things like "Scrap Mechanic" and "Terra Tech" but honestly I feel like those comparisons are surface level more than anything, In my opinion there just isn't anything quite like Nuts & Bolts :)

If I can be a bit more nuanced though, I just appreciate that all 3 are solid enough and unique enough that they don't blend together. A lot of the mario games blend together for me, not the case with DKC.

I really dislike the ammount of hate DKC3 gets online, I loved it as much as the other 3 games. It's a thorn to my side because the hate feels always fueled by a single sprite (i.e. Kiddy) and everything else is a stretch. Granted, as a kid, the order I got the games was 1>3>2, and while 2 became my favorite, 3 never disappointed me or anything like people online, neither did I see it as "annoying baby, gimmicky stages". If anything, I'm sure kid me only saw it as "hehe monke go brr, donky konk fun".

    @DarkBowser64 Před rokem +1

I honestly feel very similarly with regard to DKC3. I did not play it when it came out, instead I first played it and DKC2 about 10-11 years ago. I had only fully played DKC1 before then, so it isn't nostalgia talking here. I love all the games in the trilogy, just I like DKC3 a bit more than the others. I really think it's the most polished and user-friendly of the original trilogy, and I keep going back for both 103% and 105% playthroughs more than I ever come back to DKC2 for 102%. I never hated Kiddy, and in fact I'm pretty sure that if Kiddy were DK instead then he would just end up taking the spotlight in media focusing around the game, and preventing Dixie from having her time in the sun as the main heroine here. Remember, it was the mid-90s.
It feels like the levels are all fairly well-balanced because they made them with the higher difficulty modes in mind as well as 100% completion. Every level is uniform except for one, in that they ALL have exactly 2 bonus barrels and one DK coin to get, so it becomes very routine. Of course, one level in Krematoa breaks this by having a third bonus barrel, if I recall, but it really isn't a big deal. It lends each level this rhythm of move through the level keeping an eye out for secrets, get collectables, finish. No single bonus felt way too frustrating or unfair. This is helped by the fact that in the original SNES release, you can save basically anytime as long as you're willing to backtrack to the last save cave. This makes full completion of the game significantly more manageable because you can just take it one level at a time. You don't have to pay to save, and you aren't trapped in a world once you go in until you can find Funky like the previous two. The difficulty curve also feels significantly more reasonable than DKC2 and I liked having actual things to explore the world for in order to find Banana Birds and do little sidequests.
The soundtrack in the SNES version is beautiful and atmospheric, and I honestly think Eveline Fischer's music is extremely underappreciated. The moody and atmospheric vibe in the tracks just give you this feeling that something is going on behind the scenes of this gorgeous in-game region. The GBA version's music by David Wise is also great in its own right, but it does occasionally feel unfitting and perhaps unfinished (why is there almost a minute of ambient silence in some tracks before the music kicks in again? Rockface Rumble is great but waiting for the music to come back is annoying. The tree levels having a cute playful theme also doesn't fit in some cases, like Ripsaw Rage). But that just kind of seems to be because of the GBA version coming out very late in the GBA's life and needing to be rushed out. I still enjoy both OSTs, and you get a different enough experience to make it worth playing both versions if you're up for more.
I just wish more people would actually try the game instead of dismissing it outright just because of one character. That's ridiculous. There's so much to enjoy here, and you're missing out if you don't give it at least a fair shot. If it's not for you, fine, but at least that way you attempted to see the good in it.

I think I only played the first level of DKC 3, partly because of the ugly looking rats not sitting well with me. When I got them all on my Wii a few years back, I blasted through the first game, being surprised how short it felt, but still immensely enjoying it. DKC 2 started out the strongest, but the levels felt more grating than fun sometimes. Still great, and the soundtrack is absolutely EXCELLENT! DKC 3 felt more fleshed out than the previous two. The majority of the gimmicks were fun, rather than frustrating. The soundtrack sounded more subdued and atmospheric, which fit well. And I ended up enjoying Kiddie as much as the rest of the gang.

Great video as well, thanks for putting it up. I played this one (to completion) back in 98 on console and then some more in 2005 (emulated). Then I just kept playing 1 and 2. Recently I got 3 again for the SNES and enjoyed it even more. I keep having this argument with people who say 3 is the easiest. I don't get it. I've played them all countless times and I still find it to be the most challenging (if you're determined to get 103%). More frustrating levels and bonuses, not to mention the last K. Rool matches. The music has some really cool, interesting and even epic tunes, just a little less than in previous 2 games. My only complaint has always been the character design. It's ugly IMO. But the gameplay, replay value, background design, difficulty, bosses and interaction ideas make it so much better than DKC1. I still prefer the 2nd one, but I totally get it when you say the 3rd gets so much hate for no reason sometimes. I love all 3 and I don't think I'll ever stop playing them, even if it's not regularly. I've been revisiting them a lot for the past 1 1/2 years since I got them again physically and I want to get better at speed running them. I feel like DKC1 is technically the easiest but it has bad level desing and enemy placement that make it harder than it should be, then DKC2 is a bit harder than both when only playing the main levels but quite easier than DKC3 when doing 100% (which I have always done, not with DKC1 though). Going for 103% is totally different than just doing the main levels, Swoopy Salvo is my nightmare to complete. About the character designs I agree that they're a bit worse than the other 2 games but not horrible by any means. I like to try and "speedrun" them as well, mainly 2. I can beat it 102% in under 2 and half hours but I know I can do better. I'm curious to know your time. To conclude I also feel 2 is the best and 3 is much better than 1. In DKC 1 I almost exclusively used Diddy, and in 2 and 3 it was all Dixie. So it was hard to complain about a character I really only used if I got hit.
For me the character controls are Dixie -> Diddy -> DK/Kiddy. Kiddy didn't feel drastically worse than DK, but I barely used either of them so I'm not the person to analyze their differences 🤷

Thank goodness I'm not the only one. I played all 3 as a child, but back then only owned DKC3 and only played DKC2 and DKC1 at friends and family houses, and yes, it was in reverse order. All three are amazing games, and DKC3 doesn't improve everything, such as atmosphere and soundtrack (which is only docked because DKC2 100% bangers while DKC3 only has 70% bangers) but in terms of actual gameplay the platform hitboxes are clearer, the levels more innovative, the map open and explorable, both the map and level secrets more unique, the difficulty curve smoother, and the bosses way more creative. In fact the bosses are the biggest improvement. DKC1 bosses actually sucked while the DKC2 bosses were better but still standard platformer boss fare (hit the baddie with the projectile or survive the gauntlet, with unfair jerky speed boosts to the boss each phase a-la DKC1). but DKC3 gave us a belching barrel you had to feed, a snowman you had to fight in 3rd person, a giant spider you had to ride, a squid in a waterfall that tries to push you off the stage, and a mad scientist that moves platforms while electrifying the floor, complete with comedic electrified skeleton gag. Each have their strengths, but I give DKC3 the crown as the best all around platformer, even if Stickerbrush Symphony alone makes DKC2 a very close second.

On two things I don't agree with thoguh: the first is that I think DKC2 is the best game of the trilogy, the second is that I think there IS a significant difference in quality between them, specifically I think DKC2 is an astronomical improvement over DKC1 and a bit better than DKC3 (so 3 is a big step up from 1).

I think it makes sense Kiddy was chosen over DK for Dixie's partner since Dixie is the star of this game and Dk would probably take away from the focus on her. Personally wasn't a big fan of a lot of DKC3's more slow paced levels. DKC 1 and 2's levels were much more fluid and free flowing. never slowing down the platforming and action. I can appreciate the concepts and interesting level designs DKC3 went for though. Some of them were really enjoyable and are some of my favorite levels in the series. For every level design I enjoyed though there was one I wasnt a big fan of. For example you said the water level that reverses your controls was "a neat and unique gimmick" as if to imply its a good concept for a level, I however disagree. I think its really bad design to reverse the players controls and actually imo isn't fun at all and doesnt add anything interesting the level itself, just annoying to deal with for the player. Overall I do enjoy DKC3. I still do think its a good platformer overall, and while I understand the perspective of the small section of the fanbase that thinks its the best in the series, I just dont like the pace of its level design as much compared to its predecessors.

Donkey Kong 64 also has similar issues with it's internet reputation where it's a fantastic 3D platformer that's on par with some of the greats of the same era. The Tag Barrel mechanic sadly aged so poorly that People often overlook just how good of a 3D platformer it is (also really solid aesthetics, honestly)
Platformers were my favorite genre as a kid but I've since grown out of them. Still I replayed DK64 recently with an instant tag barrel AR code made by Kaze Emanuar. and even though I didn't finish it, I was surprised just how well this game holds up! (Got halfway through Fungi Forest I believe?)
As a kid, a fond memory I have was going from Mario 64's accessibly low-difficulty bosses to DK64's bosses that actually wanted to challenge the player. Losing to the first boss left an impression on me and can't even remember how many times I lost to Mad Jack (Fantastic Boss + Music to me personally.) The tougher bosses really stood out to me on my first playthrough as a kid.
Speaking of Bosses, I love how DK64 bosses would have the "hit x times to win" formula but on the last phase would actually try to dupe the player by averting expectations. Made the bosses feel like they were evolving their strategy against you, and also made them feel less predictable. Something I'm surprised we don't see much in games.
Overall I think DK64 is under appreciated and has aged really well minus the tag barrel mechanic. wish it got an official quality-of-life update to rework the tag barrel mechanic so it wouldn't be so overbearing on the whole experience.

DKC3 is not a bad game per se but there's nothing that makes it stand out the same way as the other two. The first game has the incredible realism and sophistication that makes it seem very mature, as well as the enemies are placed in a way that makes you blast through a stage with some skill. The soundtrack is toned down and thoughtful. The second game is very dramatic and feels more of a video game than DKC1. It's very challenging and so much fun. The soundtrack is catchy and incredibly melodic. I love both games for how different they are. They feel completely different but both are so good in their own way.
The third game is, in my opinion, more a mediocre platformer at most. Full of gimmicks. The tone and feel are not quite there. It feels more dorky and childish compared to the first two. There's less humour in it. Less rewarding ending. The soundtrack matches the dorkiness and the boss fight alone sounds so easy-going compared to the 2nd game's really heavy tone. There's no climax in the game. Many of the stages feel more like you're working rather than having a fun, challenging experience. I also dislike that you always can go back and save. It removes a lot of that rewarding feel of finally reaching a save point, like in the first games.
At least those are my reasons why I always thought DKC3 was a lot worse than the first two.

Music is a major part of why DKC and DKC2 are the best ones. It's all about creating atmosphere. I think the music in DKC3 isn't as good as the first two. I only like Water World, Pokey Pipes, Nuts and Bolts, Treetop Tumble, Rockface Rumble, and Frosty Frolics (though I think that song would be better suited for an ice cave rather than an outdoor level). I don't like the remaining songs. They're too silly and not atmospheric enough. If I could, I would replace them with David Wise's GBA versions.
In terms of gameplay, I think DKC3 is almost the best one. The bosses are the best. The secrets aren't too obscure - You can always see some hint on screen leading you to them while you platform. That way you don't have to feverishly scan every nook and cranny for hours like you have to do in the first two games. A bunch of new mechanics are brought into the game as well. There's a puzzle that you solve in the world map, and it makes the game like one big escape room. Completing the game 100% is way more fun than in the previous two games. However, the major weakness of this game is the difficulty, or lack thereof, at least in the first few worlds. Consider players who beat DKC2. For those players, they must have acquired a decent amount of skill in order to beat DKC2 (which can be borderline kaizo at times). For them, difficult levels become their baseline. Meaning they require difficult levels in order to stay engaged, and any levels below their baseline won't engage them as much. When going from DKC2 to DKC3, the drop in difficulty is jarring, and players can get bored easily.
I think the issue that people have with Kiddy Kong is that he's a baby. Teenage boys don't want to play as a baby, because then it looks like they're playing a game for babies. DKC games are supposed to be a bit darker, thematically speaking, than Mario games, and that is one of their main appeals. Kiddy Kong is just too silly to fit in here. Gameplaywise, when the only two Kongs are Dixie and Kiddy, that leaves us with no agile character. In the first two games, we had Diddy Kong as the agile character who could accelerate quickly and more quickly. With only Kiddy Kong and Dixie Kong, all movement feels sluggish.
To sum up why DKC3 is not the best one: I would rather spend an hour listening to Life in the Mines and scanning the whole stage for obscure off-screen secrets than spend 5 minutes listening to Stilt Village and breezing through an easy level meant for babies.

Music: much worse than its predecessors with a few good songs.
Levels: really creative but not as fun as the second game.
    Atmosphere: really charming.
Overworld: pretty good but the worlds could do a bit more to stand out from eachother.
Collectibles: way too close to the main path.
Difficulty: way easier than most people say; the easiest of the snes trilogy.
    Swanky: no.
Bosses: pretty fun, with really creative ideas.
Animal buddies: eh. New ones are fine, but the old ones are improved so thats good.
Controls: a bit slower than DKC2 but its still good.
Characters: i don't care about them whatsoever.
Graphics: amazing, although some environments do feel a little unrealistic.
Overall: great game with its own identity and huge creativity, but still worse than most (maybe even all) other DKC games. Ripsaw Rage alone makes it hard to rank this game low.
Rating: 7.9/10, a really good game.

I have no hate for dkc3, i do agree it is very underrated, partly because of the timing of n64 coming out right around the same time, i actually think it is better than dkc1 minus the music i give the edge to dkc1 on that note, dkc1 was just too easy imo. Dkc3 is more challenging and funner than dkc1, i dont really care much or vice versa bash kiddy its just 1 of those it is what it is things that in my opinion doesn't mess up the game, i do prefer donkey kong over kiddy of course, thats probably the only other edge i would give to dkc1, but dkc3 is definitely a better game than dkc1, i know that is a minority opinion as well, but with all that being said, and without even going into any details on why bc there is no need to,..... DKC3 is not better than DKC2!! Sorry but not sorry have a nice day though. Ps. Tropical freeze is probably my 2n favorite dk Game, go play tropical freeze whoever reads this comment and hasnt played it, you will not be disappointed.

My opinion exactly. DKC1 was too simplistic and boring for me, DKC2 was too inconsistent in its difficulty, even being completely unfair at times, but DKC3 was just... perfect in every way. There's not a single level I outright despised, aside maybe from Koindozer Klamber because landing on them was really janky. I can't remember if it was as bad in the GBA version, but it sure as hell was in the SNES one.
I also think the hate towards Kiddy is completely blown out of proportion. I think he's adorable and really funny, especially when he looks at the camera and wiggles his eyebrows. And of course I love playing as Dixie, she was my main in DKC2 for a reason. Really glad that she got her very own game to show just how capable she is. I also find it hilarious that the second secondary character got to be in more Donkey Kong Country games than Donkey Kong himself. Ellie is also amazing and I love how she's the first animal buddy to have some sort of personality (except for maybe Squitter having an interesting in cool sneakers). I also find her more fun to play, because flinging barrels at enemies is a lot of fun. In general, they do way more with the animal buddies in this game, giving them entire stages that fully revolve around their strengths and weaknesses. Heck, Ellie gets several, showing just how versatile she is!
The music is also fantastic and really fits the moody atmosphere of some of the levels. However, I'd say the GBA OST fits overall best, it's just more upbeat and works better for a more lighthearted, easy-going adventure. I mean, you're basically at summer camp in the game.
The bosses are also fantastic and downright scary (Bleak was basically the reason I wanted to play the game in the first place), though I dislike how many of them still involve just sitting around and waiting. This is especially bad on the final boss battles, because you can't do anything while K. Rool flutters back and forth.
But yeah, levels are expertly craftly and never frustrating (there's barely any instant death pits in the game too), the bonus rooms are all amazing, and it's just a joy to play through. I couldn't agree with you more if I tried.
