  • 12 Mile Delta is a low cost Department of Conservation (DOC) campsite next to Lake Wakatipu, 12 km out of Queenstown. It's a beautiful campsite and it's also known as one of the filming locations for the Lord of Rings movies (Ithilien camp scene).
You do not need to have a certified self-contained vehicle to stay here, so you can stay in tents or vans that don’t have the CSC sticker. As the campsite does not require campers to have CSC vehicles, you can use solar showers and tip the grey water into the trees, so long as you do it around the campsite and not anywhere near the lake.
Boil water and cool it before you drink it or brush your teeth with it. Brushing your teeth or spitting in rivers and lakes is forbidden in New Zealand.
The campsite is named 12 Mile Delta as it’s located on a river delta at the outlet of Twelve-Mile Creek.
If you're planning to stay often at Department of Conservation (DOC) campsites, you may want to purchase a campsite pass. You can choose either a 30-night or 365-night Campsite Pass. You can read about that here:

The Lord of the Rings lookout is such a short walk from the campsite. This area has great views.

Nice place...how was the road from the sealed road to the site...and I agree with your criticism of the lack of rubbish bins, but that could be said of any council in the country ...thay want our money but give us nothing in return!!!.💕🇳🇿

Omarama was really good; they had free rubbish bins at the dump station. The freedom camps around Cromwell managed by LINZ (the ones all around Lake Dunstan) all have free rubbish bins. Queenstown Lakes is the worst I've seen.
The road going into 12 Mile Delta is good with no pot holes, but it is a bit steep and windy and a bit narrow for vehicles travelling in the opposite direction to pass. Although at least it's short.
Those large buses in the photos all made it into 12 Mile Delta without issues. Looks like they're staying all summer.

I'm guessing they found summer work in the Queenstown region, and that campsite was their cheapest accommodation option? I only stay more than a week in one place if I've got work to do :)
