The beauty about growing up in the 80s and early 90s was the fact that the music was so ubundant. You enjoyed listening to rock, rap, funk...it didn't matter.....you appreciated all genres. The talented bands that were coming out in droves in the 80s was something else. Damn I miss those times.

@Gerald H i agree. as a (now 67 year old) German i used to do my homework with AFN (American Forces Network) my mother hated it but is was the only radiostation that played Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Taste, Ten Years After, Steppenwolf all kinds of blues, rock, folkrock ect. All these bands where 'homegrown' and haven't been casted together by mighty labels. Genuine music!!!!

She looks and sounds like a Southern country girl, but she's actually a Canadian from Toronto - loved this song for over thirty years now and it never grows old - perhaps the greatest Elvis tribute song ever! And yes, she's not exactly a one-hit wonder, but this is by far her best known work - thanks for reacting to this gem!

This was about Elvis. Rock n Roll was the "new religion that would bring you to your knees"
"Love me Tender leaves them crying in the aisles " Love Me Tender was Elvis' first movie and also the name of the song from the movie Elvis sang.
"In a flash he was gone it happened so soon" some people say that is about when he went into the service but others think it's his untimely death at the young age of 42. I think it's his death. I've actually had arguements with a friend about that! Lol
At any rate. This is a GREAT song that captures the Southern feel very well.
And you are right, it is shocking it was her only hit, at least in the states!
    Great reaction!

Elvis was a natural blonde but he believed he looked better with black hair and that dark haired performers lasted longer so he dyed his hair black. The color company changed the color of their black to black velvet in honor of him. My mom was a hairdresser in the 50’s and 60’s and it was a big deal.

Jimmy Rogers was supposedly Elvis' mother's favorite performer while Elvis was growing up. The first stanza of the lyrics (especially that he was born in Mississippi) describes his close relationship to his "Mama" which was the name of his first song. I've heard "if you please" was one of Elvis' catch phrases in his movies. I'm not a fan, so that may be correct. The clincher, was at the end of one of the music videos, Myles imitated Elvis' trademark smile in his movies.

The guitar riff is a blues classic one. You can find it in Muddy Waters"Mannish Boy" or in David Bowie"Jean Genie". What Alannah add to this blues riff, it's the drumming. Hard, loud, it drives this song to the sky. And the star in this sky is this fabulous voice.

Elvis wore black leather in that special.
"Black Velvet" refers to all the cheesy portraits of Elvis, painted onto black velvet instead of white canvas.
Las Vegas in particular was at one time known for black velvet paintings, not only of the King, but of big exotic cats and alluring half-naked women.

She was an art student at the time, and I can relate to her, plus I sing, and this song is the one I start with.

I remember buying this for when it first came out, plus round that era, every party would have this playing and with Karaoke too, someone would end up singing it.

from some time i listen to old music as therapy. i heard a lot of songs but i know there are a lot of songs which i can't recall. i know just melody but not name of song, band or singer. and i definitely know there are tunes of songs which are deep in my heart and i can't even remember melody. i found a lot of pearls but man, i didn't hear this song over 20 yrs! it is such happyness to find another jewell and let's say another puzzle of my youth. thank you and thank to people which give you such great suggestions...

We didn't have a black velvet of Elvis that I recall. It was a Siamese cat painted onto black velvet. Hehe and an ownership of a beautiful Siamese cat named Charlie.
The black lite and strobe lites of my toddler days. LOL
Love to sing this song. Beautiful lady singing. The great big extra is the horse. My favorite animal.
Edit: the video he watched did not show the horse in the original video. The original was when she had on the hat looking western on a porch. She rode up to the porch on a horse.

Supposedly, Elvis said he wanted black velvet to line coffin he was lain in. Regardless, there's a lot of references to Elvis in this song.
