- Amtrak's HHP-8 was the result of a joint engineering project between Bombardier and Alstom as EMD's ol' reliable, AEM-7, was going into the shops for conversion into AC power. However, the HHP-8 wasn't all that it seemed to be once out on the rails... On this edition of Engines of Amtrak I discuss this shortlived but powerful dual cab electric locomotive.

when I was younger, I used to think these were acela's that were modified to be a single locomotive. I was way off 😂

Me too. I called them the "double-sided Acela engines".
When i was getting into trains a year and a half ago i first saw them in a thanksgiving rush video. I thought they were disconnected locomotives from the acela lol

I've allways liked these engines. My first time riding Amtrak was on a local behind an HHP-8. I am so glad that MARC is retaining my favorite Electric Passenger Engine.

Despite the heavy technical flaws, HHP-8 was a beautiful locomotive.
Yeah but they're coming back into NPCU service. One is already converted.
Wow, it feels like this series started last week and now its coming to an end pretty soon. Time flies I guess.
well it wont ever end as long as Amtrak keeps making new and better tech engines this series will go on, episodes will just take longer

This is why I stay up after midnight. Great video I loved this series and it has taught me so much about Amtrak. I feel like that this series started yesterday. And it's almost over. Keep up the great work!
I've actually been seeing more the MARC ones recently, after many years of them being pulled from service. Unfortunately these units still have a lot of issue but they keep MARC at the fastest commuter operator in North America
FINALLY, IT'S HERE, in the middle of the night lmao.
I lived in CT on the northeast corridor in the 2000s and I'd see AEM7's all the time but HHP8's were rare. Maybe a once a month sighting.

MARC is still using their HHP-8s even today in 2021 and I suggest that people see them before they are retired.
5:41 well in 2017 we stopped on our way home from the Rhode Island air show and on the track across the road I think I saw a hhp 8 (or an Acela just sitting around)

Part of the front and the windscreen look just like the Acela and the HHP-8 was indeed a very beautiful locomotive.

First time I took Amtrak, northeast regional, from New York to Baltimore, it was pulled by an HHP-8.
Actually some of Amtrak’s HHP-8s were leased from a company known as Phillip Morris Capital Corp. They haved sued Amtrak over the storage of the HHP-8s they claim AMTK have “canibalized” the locos for parts.
Ugh. It feels like yesterday when these were retired :(
I remember these from my MTS days it was a lemon then and it is a lemon now TS now has the Charger and the ACS-64 as their head end power.
Lucky Marc still uses a few of them
First time I took Amtrak was from New York penn station to Orlando Florida and the part between New York and Washington was pulled by an hhp-8. I never understood why the didn’t just have Alstom lower the horsepower to limit the wheel slip and replace the trucks to prevent problems that they had and shared with the Acela.
Amtrak is currently converting the HHP8s into NPCU Cab/Baggage Cars.
Took Amtrak this past year in the northeast and I swear I saw them running these engines. They were in the same paint and everything minus the Acela logo. Also remember going through NJ and seeing some crazy weird locomotives there those were NJ transit. I distinctly remember along that route seeing a few trains with these locos. Saw the new Acela too great rail action out the window of amtraks silver service
The HHP-8s faced a similar problem to the failed SDP40Fs, but had a varied 15 year career running the Northeast Corridor.
I really don't want the series to end... But when Amtrak decides to add locomotives to their fleet you should do episodes on them
Maybe when the Engines of Amtrak finally concludes, you could make another Engines of series. Maybe like engines of NJ Transit or Metro North or LIRR, Septa, or etc.
NJ Transit? Yes. Metro North and LiRR are part of the MTA of New York City so I think Engines of MTA (NYC) is a more suitable title. Someone else is doing Engines of SEPTA and VIA Rail and GO Transit are occupied.

Couple of items: No. 653 on the F-end had a split-manifold AMERICAN-tuned K-5LA, not a hybrid K-5 like the rest. Also, at first these locomotives were called "Bananas" due to their shape when viewed from broadside. Some clever engineer even went so far as to name them each individually such as "Anna Banana, Diana Banana," etc. But later they were referred to as Hippo's due to "HHP" plus their cab ends reminded one of a hippopotamus.
I rode behind one of these from Washington, D.C. - Newark, N.J. in 2012.
I also heard the HHP-8's had overheating issues. I lived right next to the Northeast corridor/ Penn Line and in the summer it was noticeable that they pulled shorter trains. Could just be summer time has fewer passengers, but word was those hot days were too much for them. The diesels trains didn't seem shorter.

90's computer technology is to blame for many locomotives that turned out to be lemons. The HHP-8, the GP40MC, and a few others had very rocky starts.
I hope New Jersey Transit purchases an HHP-8 soon.
I loved the HHP-8s and the Acela Express when I used to play Microsoft Train Simulator.
I use to but since both games came out the HHP-8 is a lemon 2 years after they came out they were in the shop for overheating problems.

problem with the HHP-8 was it was a lemon within 2 years of service all 15 units were in the shop undergoing traction motor and pantagraph replacement and they overheated. Amtrak retired all of them and handed them over to MARC for rebuild. It was replaced by the Siemens Charger and the ACS-64 City Sprinter also made by Siemens and Bombardier.
MARC HHP-8 4310 was the odd duck, even among MARC's HHP-8s - it flew MDOT - not MARC - livery. (This HHP-8 was commonplace at Ivy City in 2000 - does anyone nave video of this HHP-8 in operation? Did the B&O Museum get it?)
Just heads up They might infact being returning to a form of service as Cab Cars, so don't count em out yet, but one was spotted returning to service recently so we'll see what Amtrak is doing with them now

Amtrak bought the E units from companies that suffered bankruptcy or shutdown. They were dirty because they sat in storage mostly.

Matt Bown from Extreme Trains did a "movie I guess" off of the acela. That may be some great source material.

Suprised NJT doesnt have a few HHP-8s, considering like all of their electric trains and cars are all made by Bombardier. Then again, the ALP 44 seems to be much more reliable i guess
I know you're going to talk about the Acela Express train set because in the next three years they will be retired in favor of the phase 2 Acela Express train sets from French manufacturers because all of the Acela Express train sets are nearing 20 years old just like the Genesis engines
The first time I saw an HHP8 was in Penn Station, NYC. Curious thing, someone had put an image of Daddy Duck on the nose of the engine.

Hey Amtrakguy365 I attned the NRHS railcamp east and we took a tour of the Wilmington shops and we saw HHP-8 there. A camper asked what goingon with the HHP-8 and the amtrak employee said " we still maintain them and if i recall correctly they are on a lease and the lease is not over on them " Don't quote on me Its been a while since I heard the answer.

As a franch man I feel that HHP 8 must not be that close to our BB 36000. From your video, I understand that they had a lot of problem, but in contrary, our BB 36000 are very reliable. Do you know on which part did Althom contribute exactly? And are they irreliable part?
