I agree with you. I find most of them very cringy. I almost have respect they are putting themselfs out like that. BUT. There is an exception! When the impression is on a very high level, i mean when the impressionist is really dancing on a professional level or he even sings live, which is a whole other level, it can actually be really good. The dance moves must be sharp as hell and on point. The ones who sing live are rare and often they try to copy his voice, which is a unique one in the music business and thus hard to copy. That can be embarrasing too. There is one impressionist which really impressed me (i am a perfectionist and its very hard to impress me ;) was Jeffrey Perez. Thats when the untrained listener closes his eyes and thinks " Uh that could be Michael Jackson."
So when somebody has the gift of dancing, a real good voice and looks decent without having to use a truckload of makeup in the face i think its legit to copy MJ 1 on 1.
By the way i also did impressions of him as a young adult, quite professional but only in my room. Because i realised that its not good enough. I wanted to learn singing whilst dancing. And he is the goat doing that. I studied how he moves on stage. Especially how stable his upper body was whilst dancing. Which is important so the voice performance doesn't suffer whilst dancing. I ended up doing the same sounds in between the lyrics. Not because i wanted to copy him but because its a consequence when you tense up your core muscles whilst dancing and singing.
So when somebody makes MJ sounds like ahhh (releasing pressurized air from the lungs) before a phrase or in between and so on because of tensing up the muscles, i respect that. When the same person does it for delivering an exact copy ... i don't know. Its only a copy and it sounds not so natural.

I respect the honesty, not many people have the confidence to be real and be okay with the backflash. Tributes have to learn to take criticism and not see it always as hate. Victimizing mentality. Took notes, bless! Learning never stops.

and this is actually like dead on accurate for how alot of the mj tribute artist are, like either their makeup is just so offputting
you can tell that they are wearing a wig, their dancing will be on "why are people paying for this" level, or their singing will just be really bad
or worse of all, they will be salty and not be able to take any constructive criticism because they think they are the best
like i want to maybe get as big as jeffrey perez, rodrigo teaser, or sergio cortes(who are god tier tribute artist imo, i am dying to see them at a concert)
but at the same time i dont care, i just want to have fun and entertain people and maybe even set a path to have my own music career and maybe get to perform and do songs with some of the singers that i LOVE other than michael and still do tribute shows for fun
i dont really care about being "the best", which should really be the mindset tribute artist/impersonators should have
it's not about being the best, to me it's more like keeping michael's legacy alive and introducing more people to his music and most of all, having fun

It doesn't make sense how a lot of black impersonators don't even appreciate eras before Dangerous era, we need to do better.
I get you on that point. What also doesn’t make sense is that, I find that people with darker skin (maybe I did mention it in the video) “paint” themselves with lighter makeup and it looks so weird. It’s like… why???? There’s some rare cases on instagram where there’s people who have darker complexion do the earlier eras of MJ - like Off The Wall and Thriller. Bad era, I found now it’s getting slowly covered to death. The coverage for the younger MJ eras are slowly getting there which is good!

I cringe when I see Michael impersonators. And people give me so much flack for it. There is only one Michael. Often imitated (poorly) yet can't be duplicated (ever). Impersonators are cheesy... like Elvis impersonators...cheesy. Learn to dance like Michael..fine! No need to try and dress like him or look like him. You can't. Or try to sing like him. Don't. Michael was given a gift from God with his voice, dance and talents . Don't mess with perfection.. RIP Michael❤️🙏

I think impersonators who get plastic surgery too is just weird... . Also try to find which era u look like better for example I'm a little tan so I fit in the bad era
Impersonators and tributes who get full blown surgery are obsessed... and not in a good way. There's some people who yes, they have had an accident in their personal life or want to have a cosmetic change that they want to have (thats' not related to MJ). But people who literally go up to their plastic surgeons and say "I want to be like Michael Jackson" - I cannot make any justifiable excuse to say that, that is right at all. That's why people do makeup to contour their face - which some do it quite well and some others look atrocious.
With era's and skin tones, literally do any era that makes you happy! That's fine with me and I suppose others who share the same thoughts with me. The only problem is that just don't paint your face white or black because that is just a whole can of worms of problems....

I learned most of the MJ moves I know from tribute artists like Alex Blanco and River Gibbs (he’s not an MJ fan anymore but I did watch his content before he left the fandom). Having good tribute artists who know what they’re doing is really helpful- especially when they can teach you how to dance and maybe sing like Michael.
The most important thing about getting a Michael Jackson tribute right is *putting in the effort* . Michael did it, that’s why he’s still respected today. The same goes for his fans who want to pay tribute to him.
If I was the right physique and had enough good costumes, I would be posting MJ tribute stuff as well, but getting into shape is a long way off for me right now. Wish me luck 🤞
Additionally, I wish more tribute artists did songs Michael didn’t usually perform. I have some ideas for how some of these songs could work, but I need help from a choreographer and stage designer to make the ideas a reality lol

Great video. When i do my performances i sing live in the style of MJ but i incorporate my own style into it. I also hate people using crappy wigs. I just grew my hair out and kept it as it's normal colour.

You dont have to use make up for mj impersonating unless its professional mj dancer
And even then “professionals”, most of the time look so ghastly…

Really after that wierd baptism of a amusement park ride that made me feel cleansed for NO REASON

Great video , I my myself am torn between do I prefer the tribute artist who comes out and preforms as themselves to honour MJ, or the impersonator who goes the full distance. I think a bit of both works but like you say they have to remember they are not or ever will be Michael Jackson. I've also noticed quite a lot now saying there the number 1 and endorsed by Michael , family or estate
An example , I once went to a Queen Tribute band at a theatre . They were good but I was somewhat displeased because they were there just in there Jean's and tshirt playing away . When I pay theatre prices I want to be blown away with costume and energy and not feel like I'm sat watching a pub band.

The number 1 is simply just an ego boost or just a marketing ploy. It's basically just to shove it down your throat to tell other people to choose them over the others. With the endorsed by Michael, estate etc - I've seen older impersonators that have worked with MJ or the "MJ" business - but that is when they had 5 MJ performers in each country... not every local town. The market now is so saturated - especially now with Instagram. Same have official worked with the MJ company etc only once and they just milk that certificate (I know for a fact I would as well) saying just because they got chosen once, they thunk that they're the best until the day that they die.
Sad to hear about that Queen tribute band experience... that's the reason why I'm so iffy about watching tributes is that you never know what you're going to get. The closest that I've ever done is watching the musical Thriller Live which was a good yet different experience. I tend to do research before they come to town and that most of the time I give them a miss because simply that they're not worth the watch :P

No I haven't but I've seen him around. He's okay. His hair though I pretty sure it's 99% a wig but it's just been stylized to look more realistic than the usual cheap wig.
Serio Cortez is another Mj impersonator actually he looks like him its insane we all miss Mj but he is gone too soon...

Navi is pretty old he performed at michael birthday so he's gotten rusty but back is the best.
But even when he was in his prime he was still a bit stiff and that his moves wasn't that sharp

i am dancing like mj but why do you have to look like him maybe i do my hair a little but not like mj its just knot in my hair and my hair looks like it but not doing that makeup and stuff its just ugly

@@HaydenHuynh also you can search up “Navi Smooth Criminal Michael Jackson’s birthday party” and you will find that he was amazing in those clips it’s just because Navi has gotten older but in the original clips from 2003 where he performed for MJ he was 27 so he was at his very best then so that was his prime.I know now the moves are extremely stiff but I think the clips your looking at are from 2010 which where not his prime

There's some cases where he's poorly singing over MJ's vocals or he is lip syncing his own vocals but it's more so shouting.
