One of many INCREDIBLE synthesizers for cheap that are on the market currently... Was interested in the original back in like 2010, and never would have expected Korg to re-release the machine, but synth dreams DO come true apparently! hahah
People use it for bass, leads, singing sounds (the MS series is great at that), drums, unique atmospheric sounds, sequencing, sound effects, processing other synths/instruments...it's a fantastic synth that does a lot that most synths can't, and the high and low pass filters are the coolest part of any synth ever (yes, even cooler than Moog's ladder filter). And don't forget the ESP!
I have a Korg MS-20 synth emulation keyboard as part of the Korg Legacy Software. The software is a GREAT plug-in for Cakewalk SONAR, Pro Tools, and many more Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). I fount this video extremely valuable as a practical hands-on help on better understanding the knob controls of the MS-20, which can be formidable to learn. Thanks to you, Ujiie San! Regarding those criticizing this video, it's a free world! If it does not talk to you, go elsewhere and no harm done!
`Cause this words come from English directly. But more right -> "Hai Passu Firuta" (usually no letter and sounds "L" in Japanese) Also "Ro Passu Firuta" (LPF), Porutamento, Furekenshi Mojureshon (FM), Enberoppu Genereta (LFO), Sanpuru Horudo (Sample Hold), Suwichi (Switch) and etc.))
Korg Ms-20 Mini as colourful as the classic MS-20! Nice video! Greetz from Gent (East-Flanders). Here in my studio I have a classic MS-10.Also a great soundmachine!
Actually he is one of my go-to online teachers. Sometimes I just watch his vids to learn a few synth licks and chords and try them out myself! He's got a very original and innovative style!
I've learnt more about the architecture of this thing from a guy using one English word in every forty than from any number of articles. Wish I'd had him as a teacher in school.
It's a very experimental type of synth, back in the day it was made for the young generation, one of the designers said. It was also supposed to teach people about synthesis. It was made as cheap as possible to increase availability to people. 12db/oct filters. The waves in the original were permanently slightly highpassed because of the values on the coupling capacitors being too small. This can be fixed with a mod, changing them to about 100 uF. The designer said it was aggresive by design.
ofcourse i could hook up a laptop running ableton, but i just like the feel u get when using the analog way.. plus.. when the laptop crashes,... there goes the midi.... so, a analog style seqeuncer would be a great addition in my opinion,.. anddddd think tons of more fun then clickin with a mouse
That would be the day. I bet they won't re-release any old stuff but there's still a chance they might do something to compete with what KORG is putting out. I would absolutely die if they brought out any old SH or JP or even Juno 60.
Uhh... So I set up the patch he plays at around 12:00 and it was really fun etc. And then the sound died altogether. I removed all patch cables and reset all the knobs and still no sound. Surely she isn't dead!?
What is new in guitars (Moog?), or drums (Simmons?) in the last 35 years? Plus the immediacy of analogue (and the patching) leads to new sounds in peoples minds...
I went for the bass station 2 over this. I will get this in time. I thought my Sub Phatty would come first, alas looks like Novation will be getting theirs out first. Love the MS20 though, you can do some mad modulation setups once you get patching.
lol I agree that this is COMPLETELY different but I got to admit that the OP1 impressed me at NAMM. Its everything you'll ever need (drum sampler, recorder, synthesizer, effects processor, and mixer) in a tiny package. Considering that, the price isnt too ridiculous. That being said I dont want an OP1..... I want this.
had this synth for a short time untill i realised that the unit i had was damaged manufacture line, i i returned it and picked up the korg minilogue instead
From what I understand this one will have a midi in there's no need for the old style sequencers. It's using midi to trigger the sounds, but its using analog to actually create the sound. IF that really is the case then it will be the best of both worlds.
But this is the price that the dealers in the U.K. are selling it for, so there are no added fees. I assume it's not manufactured in the U.S.A. so it doesn't really make sense that it would cost THAT much more in Europe does it? Also, sorry, I didn't really understand the second part of what you said
why does this MS20mini not have the loud hissy/breathy noise that mine has on all the sounds??? The MS20mini I got makes loud noise whenever I press a key. :(
Nope the voltages don't exceed 5 V and the circuitry is more than capable of handling that, The worst thing that could happen is that a routing doesn't work the way you planned it
You get used to it. I usually play a polysix with a microkorg. The thing that gets me is I'll be trying to adjust one synth's settings and playing stuff with my hand on another synth expecting the sound to change. So dumb. As soon as my local dealer stocks up on the ms-20, I'm there! Anyone else get into synths through the legacy collection like i did?
Totally agree.. I still use my old Roland MKB-200 controllers and Juno 60, but get upset when they keep putting out the same digital sound engines in packages that try to look like the old Junos / Jupiters and give them the same names. Roland lost its edge in synths 20 years ago.. IMHO. If I am using a digital synth I prefer the KORGs anyway and use Moog and Doepfer for analog. KORG really kept this MS-20 so close to the original Great Job KORG!
Seems like this thing only has two oscillators and no sub osc. Does it's extra features make up for this compared to say, the Minimoog? It's a lot cheaper than the Minimoog which is great. It's great that more people can afford analog these days with the Minibrute, this mini 20 et al.
Well, two oscillators are more than enough to create fat bass lines. As to the minimoog.. you can't really compare the two, because their sonic characteristics are way too different an MS 20 is a lot more aggressive and will always cut through a mix. it does not have the distinctive "thump" of a moog, but a lot more bite and grit. A synth with a more moog -ish touch is the bassstation 2 at least when you play the classic filter in lp mode with 24db/oct slope and the overdrive cranked. BTW : the bs 2 has a sub, but the best bass patches are those wich use the sub very little or not at all. A suboscillator is good on synths with a single oscillator design, on synths with 2 or more oscillators it isn't all that useful imho
I TOTALLY agree. But synth people have ripped me for saying that in the past, saying to "get with the times." If it's too expensive to make, they should partner with Arturia and make a dedicated controller for the Jupiter 8V or something...because I've heard a lot of folks say it's the next best thing to having a real Jupiter. Korg, Moog & Dave Smith seem to be the only people "getting the point."
A 106 is only about $500. They couldn't sell it for less than that. But they could probably make a Jupiter 8 reissue for a little over $1,000 if they wanted to. And maybe a 303 for $350. And SH-101 for $500. And some new designs based on their amazing old analogs.
Hey I agree with you except the part about the Roland JP8 reissue for a little over 1k..No way that could be done simply because the components & hardware used in analog is much more expensive than digital.Have you ever looked under the hood of a JP8 Prophet5 or OBXa?Theres a ton of stuff in there& TomOberheim himself once told me that to produce a fully analog poly synth today would be expensive & have to be priced above what the average musician can pay-just to cover its costs.. just saying..
I love this guy's vids. Don't understand a word he says, but the sounds he makes with synths speak for themselves.
I come here first for new kit demos.
Regardless of language, he's one of the best, and can play many styles. He inspires!
One of many INCREDIBLE synthesizers for cheap that are on the market currently... Was interested in the original back in like 2010, and never would have expected Korg to re-release the machine, but synth dreams DO come true apparently! hahah
Your videos are always so informative, fun, creative, and captivating.
This man explains the functions of the synth in such a pedagogic way.. Awesome!!!
And don't forget the ESP!
thanks for the great demo and review!
The MS-20 mini rocks! such a versatile and great sounding synth!
Very good demo. Now I miss my old Korg.
Played with one of these in a music shop for hours, great synth!
Impressive synth, impressive demo. Thanks.

This sounds amazing omg.
this synth is great I'm getting it later on, it's my chance to finally have an analog synth
Truly amazing combo! Now I want both! >.
really good sound!
Wow never knew "High Pass Filter" in japanese was HAI PAS FIL TA!!
+carboGP don't forget about SAMPRU AND AH HOLD OH 11:01
`Cause this words come from English directly.

amazing analog!
I want to become this guys apprentice and learn his ways
Agree, he should totally make online tutorials for synth! Chord and music theory etc. and how to program synths etc!
+DoctorEq then we all could be his apprentices
+DoctorEq although this video kind of doubles as a tutorial as well
Love the noise!
Great video! Really helpful! And with a perfect dosage of enthusiasm :)
Actually he is one of my go-to online teachers. Sometimes I just watch his vids to learn a few synth licks and chords and try them out myself! He's got a very original and innovative style!
what a crazy demo, yeah!
I've learnt more about the architecture of this thing from a guy using one English word in every forty than from any number of articles. Wish I'd had him as a teacher in school.
マジ欲しいなこのシンセ!Nice video ! ありがとうございます!
cool performance
that is a lovely scarf you have :)

I had the original, great video! very interesting!
I love Japan, always such nice, wise and clever people
Can't wait for more reissue analogs. Roland too!
His reviews usually get subtitled in english after a couple of weeks. Look out for the [CC:] version.
Love the dialup.
English sub-title is available now.
There is a massive demand for this, so much so that the launch date is pushed back so I think Roland will probably start to take note at some stage.
I love your vids!!!

... Speechless
Gotta own this!
Please include english subtitles when possible, thanks for the videos!
thx for sharing!
reminds me of some of the sounds on Radiohead's "Palo Alto".
That would be the day. I bet they won't re-release any old stuff but there's still a chance they might do something to compete with what KORG is putting out. I would absolutely die if they brought out any old SH or JP or even Juno 60.
that synth is the easiest to modulate i learned everything i know about synths on this bad boy!!
最高! 僕も早く弄りたい。
increible
It's definitely a great noise machine.
Uhh... So I set up the patch he plays at around 12:00 and it was really fun etc. And then the sound died altogether. I removed all patch cables and reset all the knobs and still no sound. Surely she isn't dead!?
I’m actually shocked the Doepfer A100 basic System never got reviewed here.
COOL!!!

best synth ever
the same way as Wendy Carlos did on a modular MOOG with her early recordings.. chords by playing the monophonic according notes on different tracks..
Need to chose one synth Moog Sub Phatty ,ARP Odyssey or MS20 mini?
瘋狂的聲音!
すばらしい!
Class
Amen!
the range on this shit is crazyyyyy
YES! I remember analog.
lol I agree that this is COMPLETELY different but I got to admit that the OP1 impressed me at NAMM. 懐かしい音だ、いいね
How will changing my shopping behaviour solve this issue?-are you saying I should shop in another continent or something?
12:13 swear he says "Hold on boss" XD
had this synth for a short time untill i realised that the unit i had was damaged manufacture line, i i returned it and picked up the korg minilogue instead
There is a Sudbury in Ontario, Canada.

You can use MIDI to sequence of course... But - analogue step sequencers are way way more fun.
please KORG, make a analog sequencer for this beauty,.. like the SQ10 but with 16 steps instead of 12.. please, please, pleaseeeeeee
More Doepfer reviews please!
this synthesizers is good for Psytrance's Bassline and FX's
MS20 - really k!ng of synthesis...
Будущее за FM-синтезом :) Хотя прелести тембров и возможностей данного инструмента это не отменяет.
Hey musictrackjp is it possible to use the MS-20 mini in combination with Ableton live 9?
Sanpuruuuu & horudooo ❤
This tool is good only for fun or experimental music.
sounds great!!! can't understand a word he's saying but he's a funny man!
why does this MS20mini not have the loud hissy/breathy noise that mine has on all the sounds??? The MS20mini I got makes loud noise whenever I press a key. :(
Are there any configurations of the right side where the cables connect that will smoke it out?
Nope the voltages don't exceed 5 V and the circuitry is more than capable of handling that, The worst thing that could happen is that a routing doesn't work the way you planned it

resonate your filters much?
Mega!,
See, we almost believed you weren't trolling up until the filters bit.
not bad ey..geil..cool =)
..and then whips out the dark energy, this guy is sick
Sensacional! Queria entender japonês...
what about a Dark Energy video?
0:13:21 - Shit got just real!
From the U.S.A., yes, but they don't allow international postage
I'm atonished! EL&P!!!!!!!
