Vaughan should have stayed as an opener but dropped down the order to accommodate Andrew Strauss. People often forget how good he was, his numbers don't quite do him justice. He was a monster on his first tour to Australia and a really classy player in general.

This was a fantastic day, I was sat in the grandstand. Red hot weather. Early on Strauss got a sconner from Brett Lee, Gilchrist dropped Vaughan & Tres was in good nick too. Score raced along. McGrath was clearly unfit and not recovered from his Edgbaston injury, Gillespie went all round the park. Warne took his 600th Test wicket when Tres was out and the whole ground stood to applaud him. The crowd was absolutely brutal to Gillespie when he was fielding on the boundary. Late on after Vaughan was out Aussie took the new ball and Brett Lee roared in. Got Pietersen on the deep square boundary hooking and sent nightwatchman Hoggard’s off stump about 30 feet. Everything you could want in a day’s cricket.

Australia would still have won because they were on a mission and angry but it would have been a lot closer. Certainly not 5-0. 3-2 I would say. Unfortunately players like Vaughan, S. Jones etc. were injured, Trescothick went home and some players were out of form. This was the peak of that great England team.
