  • Steve is on to promote his new film "Roxanne," offer his take on the worst lyrics ever sung, and try to master the art of pencil-throwing. With Adam Resnick as the victim. Movie clip deleted due to copyright caution.

    The delivery on the whole setup; Dave listening to Steve explain his own bits to him, viewer mail, etc. - had me in stitches well before the punchline.

    He was in the middle of an incredible movie streak. Three Amigos, Little Shop of Horrors, Roxanne, Planes Trains & Automobiles, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Parenthood -- all in a row from 1986-1989.

    Steve was really in his element here. Dave was loving it and playing it straight. Great to see them clowning together like this. Hilarious.
    BTW 14:04 I think I'll move to a warm climate and wear a pimp outfit like that all the time. Always wondered who that guy was. They showed that clip so many times I got a little obsessed with that guy. Did he ever show up to the studio looking for his cut?

    Michael Westmore, makeup artist of Star Trek, made the nose for Steve Martin’s Roxanne. If you are familiar with the Westmores they are a long line of makeup family: Gone with the Wind, Creature From the Black Lagoon, Breakfast at Tiffany’s etc. McKenzie Westmore has an amazing makeup line Westmore Beauty continuing the legacy 😊 fun facts 💄

    I read about this writers' union strike in that new book Letterman: The last giant of late night.

    • @dongiller
      @dongiller  Před 7 lety +4

      The writers' strike was the following year, 1988. 1987 was the NABET (National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians) strike, which lasted from June 29 until November 1.

    ...and speaking of Steve Martin. Might *ANYONE* know where I could find a clip of the time he was on Late Night & about 1/2 way through his appearance he told Letterman that he wasn’t feeling so good & that because of that he needed to go back to his hotel room to rest/sleep it off...Commercial break...Letterman still concerned with his well being checks in on Martin, only to discover that there is a full blown party (with lots of booze/lots of women & alot of cursing) going on in his room instead? Anyway, it is funny as f**k to this guy & if anyone could help me track that bit down, it would be much appreciated. Thanks, in advance. Cheers !!!

      btw -- Aired on October 1, 1984, in the 11:30 PM slot; Carson was celebrating his 22nd anniversary in prime time.
      Steve was in Dave's office, not his hotel room.

      Don Giller - Damn, how the hell did I manage to screw the up recalling the precise details of that particular S. Martin appearance on Letterman? 🤬 Considering that it ‘only’ aired a short 34 years ago. 🙄 Just messing with you, Don. Besides it only stands to reason that part of the show would have taken place in Dave’s office, as well. Thanks kindly for correcting me though. And look forward to watching it again should you be successful in uploading it. Have a good one. Cheers!!!

    How come no music for Steve?

    • @dongiller
      @dongiller  Před 5 lety +1

      This was Late Night, when guests rarely got walk-on music. Only stand-up acts received them. Seinfeld once guested without his usual stand-up and asked why there was no music intro. Paul then explained why (stand-up acts only). Thereafter, I think it was only Jerry who'd get the walk-on intro.
      On Late Show, all guests received walk-on intros.
