Carthage is by far my favorite civilization to learn about, but there's one thing about them that makes reading on them VERY annoying. Every general is either named Hannibal, Hanno, Hasdrubal, or Huno. And there's like fifty hannos and hunos a piece.
Oh I agree! The Barca family alone wasn't very inventive when it came to names. It's like having 10 sons, 5 named John, 5 named James... But, the Barca family gave us Barcelona, otherwise Messi might've ended up playing for Real Madrid - a most dreadful prospect :)

Hannibal's march to glory
The strategy Hannibal used against the Iberians at the Tagus river is similar to what he used against the Romans at the Battle of Lake Trasimene. Using campfires to fool the enemy, and then pulling a surprise ambush attack for the win. As Sun Tzu says "All war is deception." Hannibal was such a brilliant strategist that I sometimes wonder if he got his hands on a copy of The Art of War before commencing his campaign against Rome.
i've seldom had such enjoyment watching a series, i learned things about Hannibal that i've never learned before despite being a history buff for several years, well made folks.

The romans never produced a general that even matched Hannibals brilliance; and Julius Ceasar was a genocidal maniac. What he did in gaul would make Hitler blush.
@Alex P. Unfortunately that was Hannibal's downfall. If he was at least a little bloodthirsty to sack Rome, history would be very different.
Carthage was more technologically advanced than Rome at the time. Economically superior, much superior fleet and ship technology. The Rome you like to refer to was post Marian reforms, which were around 100 bc. Barbarians do win usually though, think of the mongols; they conquered all the advanced civilizations of that time(and no, none were in Europe).

man the story of the punic wars never gets old no matter how many books and documentaries you would delve into. This epic rivalry between the awesome 2 cities, wars on scale never seen before spamming arround the entire Mediteranean, massive land and sea operations and most of all the perfect theater to reveal the geniuses of legendary generals.
My goodness this have to be the greatest roman generation. Survived the Hannibalic War and was apart of the rapid expansion of the Republic into the Greek East, taking on powerful and established Alexanders succesors.
And the fact that Polybios actually lived not far in time from this period (unlike pretty much the other historians dealing with Roman republican history ) and that he accompany Scipio...errr son ? (dont know which one ;)) makes the things even more authentic.
Right, I'm off to bed. I'm still not back to full health and I stayed up to upload the video for you guys. Then, as usual... I stuck around to answer some of the initial comments before bedtime. Hehe, thank you. Chat bubbles in part one are meant to convey the absolute clusterf*ck that was Carthaginian-Roman diplomatic relation. Their dispute over where the Ebro river is located is hilarious.
I loved the sheer number of units being moved around, and the real-time events being shown clearly. Great video.
I really like the strategies Hannibal used, most of them being traps and secret flanking that show how cunning he was
Also, This is a really good video, because in the same amount of time of all your videos, you mashed a lot of battles instead of one, and detailed the strategies perfectly

Excellent video: I love the way you went into glorious detail with respect to Hannibal's conquest of the Iberian peninsula (a subject often overlooked by many historians).
I love the history about Carthage and in particular Hannibal Barca and you're doing a bang-up job telling an epic story! At the same time it is some fantastic graphic work that has been done for this video, it really binds everything together. I sincerely hope that this series will continue! Best coverage of this campaign I've found on youtube. Most videos race for the engagements on the Roman peninsula and so fail to establish the genius of Hannibal as a commander in these previous battles against the Gauls. Can't wait to watch Part II later today.

Depth and nuance are near dead... This style of vid doesn't lend itself to either very well but its nice to see something other than what's already out there for us to consume.
He basically got chased around and harassed by the Romans
@Romano Coombs I cant say that I agree with your statement that Zama was a draw, it was a Roman vicotry, and it was key to defeating Carthage, but I do agree that Fabian was very important as well and that without him the war could've been won by Carthage, but I don't think Rome (the city) would've fallen after losing at Cannae if that's what you're saying
This was very good. Not enough channels have the nerve to include a bit of humour, which also breaks up the incessant slaughter that these wars were. Very nicely done.

I really appreciate that you made a video about lesser covered events in the Punic Wars. By lesser, i mean anything besides the Battles of Trebia, Tresamene, or Cannae. This is how I learn history, and i cant learn anything when everybody keeps talking about the same events.

What I loved about the Ancient Carthaginians is that tombs would read "here lies a son of Tyre". They remained close to kin to their Phoenician city states.
Have you done dna test to see if you have any Levantine/semitic connection? Hannibal was a Phoenician and Phoenicians colonized and built Carthage.
I love history channels like these but this one is better than others because most others skip over the smaller parts of campaigns such as the siege of Saguntum but you showed the whole thing no matter how small it was. Keep up the good work, I am a huge history buff and love this channel so far

loved how informative and detailed this video was on the Spanish theatre of war as this factor is often overlooked in the grand scheme of things but ultimately proved to be the greatest thorn in Carthage's side. Brilliant oratory and captivating camera work, a wonderful effort!

I'm subbed to all the similar history based channels, love them all, but your animations on another level!
The improvement is noticeable from this upload to the last, this is a cut above the others in animation but more importantly, its easy to follow mentally... But just like any of the other channels... A moments lapse of attention merits a rewind... Miss a few seconds of narration and you're behind, but that's the nature of the beast... No room for filler when condensing decades into minutes.
I wish I could suggest a "better" model for you to follow, but I THINK the masses have spoken and this is the preferred style.
Personally, the longer and more in depth... The better!
To be fair my absolute favorites are dan carlin and daneilli bolelli, but that won't fly on CZcams and animating something like a 5-12 hour series just isn't possible for the channels here.
Keep it up, the subs are coming!
P.s.
Hannibal was really something else and doesn't get his due... While the romans might get more than they deserve... History isn't always fair...
