  • I braved the unknown with my first straight key activation at Fort Ord Dunes SP (US-1150). I didn't know if I'd enjoy the straight key so I bought the cheapest one I could find, that wasn't a J-38 key, the Putikeeg straight key off amazon. Overall I think it went well and I'm excited to get back out there with a straight key.
The camera was closer and the wind was lower, so more commentary made it into the video. Now my talking to myself isn't talking to myself if there's a camera... right?
If you're comfortable on paddles and want a humbling experience, go out there and try a straight key activation. It's fun.
    Today's Setup:
    66' EFHW in an Inverted-Vee
    Jackite 31 Foot pole
    Yaesu FT-891
    Putikeeg Straight Key

    RG-58 Coax
    Homebrew 20 Ah battery box
Thanks for watching, I appreciate it.

You're awesome on the straight key! I am not impressed with POTA videos of ops running 25+WPM and CW memories full. Basically machine operators, might as well be running FT8. You are the real deal. Its a real pleasure to work a real ham operating a straight key. The magic is in the FIST, not in how many contacts you rack up in 60 minutes. You just proved it in this video. The magic happens below 25 WPM!
Thanks for all your efforts. Hope to catch you on the air!

Good fist! I have the opposite problem used a J37 straight key for the better part of 40 years and really struggle with paddles HI! 73 DE N7BYD

Congrats and great job! 🎉Your fist is very easy to copy, and that key ain't easy to send on...and yes the little ball hurts your finger after awhile! The spring on that thing is ridiculous from the factory. I cut I think 2 or 3 coils off which helped a lot.
Now you're ready to join the SKCC and have tons more straight key fun!

Thanks! I have since "tricked out" the Putikeeg. I have a short dropping Wednesday about it. Printed a much nicer feeling ball thing and converted it to magnets instead of spring. Idk if swapping to magnets changed anything, but I had some laying around and I thought it was worth trying out.

Nice Job. I've been working with my straight key at home but haven't had the nerve to try an activation yet.

Thanks! You just gotta get out there and rip off the band-aid. Worst case you shut off the radio and only a couple people know about it, lol.

Great video. Motivated to get my putikegg out and practice. You did great. It is real life video. I doubt anyone is judging because everyone decoding has been there before.

Thank you! One of the realizations that got me on the air was acknowledging how often I jacked calls up operating on voice modes, or asked for clarification on a call I only caught part of, whichever. CW is no different, the information is just in a different form.

This video showed up on my for you page. I had no idea Morse code was still a thing.

Morse code is alive and well, my friend! Many people from around the world still enjoy sending bleeps and bloops to one another as a means to communicate with one another. It's amazingly effective too, being far easier to propagate further than voice modes. Thanks for watching!

If you get a aviation knee board and some velcro u be able to use the straight key on your lap

You're probably right. They're just expensive... I'm due for a 3d printer upgrade here soon, so I'll give printing one a whirl before I inevitably invest too much time in trying to make one before I end up buying an aviation knee board anyways... We do things not because they're easy, but because we thought they'd be easy. Thanks for watching!
