    These Engines are true workhorses, reliable and durable and set a standard that was followed by other engines which allowed, for example, the adoption of ETOPS standards. With current engines like the LEAP and the PW Pure "Problem", it would be difficult for anyone to be excited about crossing the Atlantic unless they knew how to swim very well.

    Long live the JT8D!! I had heard an old 737-200 from my airport not that long ago and it set off car alarms lol smoke and all!

    Um, it WAS the sole powerplant on the 727.

      You are correct. And there is nothing in commercial aviation today that compares with the unmistakable sound of that engine.

    And the JT8D killer: the French SNECMA M56 aka CFM56, the best selling turbofan jet engine of all time. These engines power more commercial jetliners than all others combined.
    That said, the jetliners powered by the JT8D are much better looking than those powered by the CFM56 IMO. So it is sad to see these go.
