I always do a hole back of semi hollow so that, i can reach electronics easily. I can always block the hole with something. Have done that to cheaper semi hollows now but i would do it to like, Gibson too if i would keep the guitar :)

I'm going to very carefully (so I can reuse that piece as the cover plate) cut an opening into the backside of my semi-hollow, so I can tear apart a GK3 and embed its guts in the instrument. I love this guitar but I rarely play it any more because the guitar synth is absolutely integral to my playing now, and there's no real way to put the GK3 brick on a trapeze tailpiece guitar without it looking flat horrible and getting in the way of my arm.
One of my favorite things is getting a high quality guitar for cheap because it's got lots of road wear on it (because someone loved it and played it a lot). Then put in my favorite pick-ups, add things like a trem or coil splits, and then I've got a unique dream guitar for a reasonable price. The main thing is that I work with the guitar, make it my own, and continue its story.
Damn, that monologue about failure hit me like a ton of bricks. I've also had my share of projects that didn't turn out but I hadn't thought about them in that way before. Thanks for that.
Now I'm gonna have to get out my 40yo Black Telecaster™and redo the wiring again. :-D And I think the Strat bridge will go byebye and be replaced with a Tune-o-Matic, a la Seymour's Jeff Beck TelePaul from way back when.

The Duesenberg Les Trem rules! Only issue I had was with the nut that holds the bar loosening up over time, so I just used some threadlocker. Really good design. They owe some credit to some 60's Japanese guitars that had similar mechanics
I don't think anyone ever gets done working on their first semi-hollow wiring job without vowing to never pick up a soldering iron again. I'll happily wire complicated solid-body set ups all day, but for semi or full hollows, I have no pride, and will happily pay someone else to do it. You made it look easy!
My first (and only) attempt sat on my bench for a year while I tried to force push pulls into a thin line-- give me a tiny control cavity to squeeze into any day!

When I first watched your videos last year, I'd *had* the odd pickup replacement done for me, maybe swapped out some easily replaceable hardware on a guitar or two. I think "Bocchi on a budget" is where it clicked for me. My thought process went something like "Wow, women who mod guitars are so cool... wait, I'm a woman and I own some guitars!" Your willingness to take on stuff you hadn't attempted, just try and figure out the big pitfalls to avoid and go for it, just made me realise I can also just *do* this stuff. The occasional new tool here and there, picking out just the right part of the job - turning "pretty good" into "just right". I've sure spent a lot of money since then but all of my electrics are the "just right" side of that equation, I can more or less solder, and sometimes women tell me I'm cool for modding guitars and I'm like... "Yeah! You should try it!" As far as my "All the wrong reasons" guitar, funnily enough it's also an Epiphone, specifically an Emperor Swingster. Nowadays, it's even prettier than it was when I got it and it sounds like the Gretsch it's obviously taking its aesthetic cues from - neither of those things would be true if I hadn't been inspired to try and do what you do. And funnily enough, I've also gone from a collection of predominantly hardtails to an unruly mixture of Bigsbys, Fender Floating trems and vibrolas, with one token Floyd in there for fun...

Nice to hear the twang those Wide Range humbuckers bring, you're never gonna get that twang from a P.A.F no matter how you dial it in. They really are that weird hybrid between sounding like a P90 and a Humbucker.
Saw a Sheraton, thought to my self “CZcams story time!”. Unexpectedly saw the cleanest pickup swap in history and learned a few things I didn’t expect to learn. Then you hit me in the feels with that tune and that tone. Sub. Freaking. Scribed.
The flipside of picking up a guitar because it makes you happy is that, if it doesn't, then maybe that's one that needs to go. However, the hoarder in me makes that part difficult :) The hoarder is supported by the tinkerer - who thinks that maybe with a that guitar will be what I hear in my head and the feel I want in my hands. And when do you stop - and go look to buy something that may have what you wanted in the first place - with no mods necessary? I'm with Nisebelle 100% though - hollowbodies look ridiculous on me.
Great guitar, and great song! I also wanted to thank you for being a part of the inspiration for me to change out pickups and pots on my favorite guitar. Soldering and all the wiring was a bit daunting, but seeing your love of modding and determination to make your gear better helped me to take the plunge as well. Indeed, I also own a bass purchased for less-than-ideal reasons, but I concur with your sentiment: choosing an instrument should bring joy. You got yourself a new subscriber. Complete respect that you made these changes and then weren't afraid to jump in and try again - especially on one of the hardest guitars to work on and get into and out of. I think something said really struck a chord - I think PAFs sound amazing on full hollowbody guitars... but for semi-hollow and solid body guitars I think most people struggle with the fact that they lack "character" for cleans. For 335 style guitars I think Eric Clapton was the first guy who showed many of us that they, like many LPs, need a higher output pickup to hit the front of the preamp the way we want. Not just for heavy things though for cleans and Jazz playing. Also I've been playing for years and have typically switched between Ibanez Artcore full hollow and Fender style guitars... though I finally have a couple 335 style Ibanez guitars. Its still a challenge for me because I typically like full hollow or full solid - though every day I play a 335 I like it a bit more. Also I've had trapeze tailpieces added to my Ibanez AS73 guitars and so it "feels" more like the full hollow archtops, takes an .11 set well, but I like using these for funky things, Hip Hop, and recording. Also those wide angle pickups look like a great choice for that Sheradan. Kudos.

I've been considering a set of the PAF-sized wide-range for a semihollow build of my own, so thank you for the solid tone demo on a similar instrument. Tone seems somewhere between the two, which is about what I was expecting. You have truly made that instrument your own!
Tip. I just recently bought a 7 band equalizer pedal. Being my money is limited I bought the Behringer EQ700 new for only $25. It is a clone of the Boss 7 band which sells for $150. I am amazed how well it performs. It is giving me a lot of flexibility for dialing up my tones. I am a retired sound engineer and very particular about tone. I am playing a Sire Larry Carlton S3 strat. I am thrilled with it.

I just wanted to comment that I really appreciated the mustang video, your schematics helped me get the wiring I wanted with one single coil neck and one single coil sized humbucker (jb jr) bridge. I now have a push pull spit on the bridge and your wiring helped me get phase/series/parallel! also like this vid too!
Sheraton’s as a platform to upgrade are INCREDIBLE! I traded a pedal for a road worn one years ago. Swapped out the guts for parts from a 335 and added a Bigsby. Sounds and plays amazing!

A Sheraton is an excellent candidate for modifying, and yours turned out great! I have a '97 Sheraton I've had for years that I plan to put some Duncan '59 pups in that I already have. Now you've got me thinking about installing a vibrato.

Awesome playing! I had exactly the same experience with my 335-style guitar. So difficult to work on. Literally spent all day replacing pickups and pots, then got the wiring wrong. Been putting up with sub-par ever since, and I'm convinced that the guitar's tone hasn't reached its potential either. I need to redo it correctly, now that I've learned a lot more about working on this style of guitar.
I have a Sheraton ll from 2003 , fantastic instruments ! Yes the original pick ups are particular a way . I had a fantastic tech who gave me some great tips : 1) adjust p/u height. Lower for more open sounding. 2) always pure nickel strings on PAF type pickups. Also string gauge makes a difference too . Lots of folks put 11's on these , but 9's and 10' are the ticket. Putting money into a guitar you don't really like to try to turn it into something you will is insane to me . Trade your bad unaltered guitar for the one that you desire. You'll save money, have a nice guitar, will have released a good instrument back into the wild, and most important: you won't have a bunch of parts collecting dust loosing money . Also, prevents thoughts of building a guitar with the parts you discarded, taking 💸💸 . Have fun ! 😊

Silver Jaguar Lara - Ariel, Silver Bass VI (Nameless) - Penelope, Silver Jazzmaster Steve (but she needs a new name) - My longstanding mod platform, so Hazel! Pink LPDC Josie - Epiphone - it even used to have a LT2! Pink LPDC Bass Valerie - Aerodyne, Holoflake Superstrat Catra, Silver HB Jazzmaster Sparkie, And the one-more-than-yours ... Silver Jag-Stang project - Cally. So yeah; I've currently got two more than you (My equivalent to your parlour is an ancient Classical I inherited), and I'm one above your final total. I hope you can forgive my tendency to excess! ;) But I've hopefully reached my end goal now. I have the three dream guitars of my childhood, I have two very different basses, and a handful of other guitars all of which offer me something a little different and all of which have meaning to me.

I just wanted to comment that I really appreciated the mustang video, your schematics helped me get the wiring I wanted with one single coil neck and one single coil sized humbucker (jb jr) bridge. I now have a push pull spit on the bridge and your wiring helped me get phase/series/parallel! also like this vid too!
Sheraton’s as a platform to upgrade are INCREDIBLE! I traded a pedal for a road worn one years ago. Swapped out the guts for parts from a 335 and added a Bigsby. Sounds and plays amazing!

A Sheraton is an excellent candidate for modifying, and yours turned out great! I have a '97 Sheraton I've had for years that I plan to put some Duncan '59 pups in that I already have. Now you've got me thinking about installing a vibrato.

I had exactly the same experience with my 335-style guitar. So difficult to work on. Literally spent all day replacing pickups and pots, then got the wiring wrong. Been putting up with sub-par ever since, and I'm convinced that the guitar's tone hasn't reached its potential either. I need to redo it correctly, now that I've learned a lot more about working on this style of guitar.
I have a Sheraton ll from 2003 , fantastic instruments ! Yes the original pick ups are particular a way . I had a fantastic tech who gave me some great tips : 1) adjust p/u height. Lower for more open sounding. 2) always pure nickel strings on PAF type pickups. Also string gauge makes a difference too . Lots of folks put 11's on these , but 9's and 10' are the ticket. Putting money into a guitar you don't really like to try to turn it into something you will is insane to me . Trade your bad unaltered guitar for the one that you desire. You'll save money, have a nice guitar, will have released a good instrument back into the wild, and most important: you won't have a bunch of parts collecting dust loosing money . Also, prevents thoughts of building a guitar with the parts you discarded, taking 💸💸 . Have fun ! 😊

I've never had a semi-hollow so never really thought about it, but the tubing to pull the pots through kind of blew my mind.
