- What is a "Drainless Tummy Tuck"? It is a tummy tuck that doesn;'t use post operative drains. Is it as great as everyone says it is? Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Matthew Schulman, shares his honest opinion and his answer may surprise you! If you are considering a tummy tuck, this video will help you prepare.
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures. and reverses the most common changes from pregnancies, aging, and weight loss. It is common to have a surgical drain placed during your tummy tuck. This drain usually stays in place for 1-2 weeks. Recently, plastic surgeons have been promoting a tummy tuck technique that promises to avoid your need for a drain, and this is quite appealing to patients. But this technique may not be all it is promised to be. Dr. Schulman discussed why the drainless technique may not be a good idea for you.
This video will help you understand why a drain is helpful, and why not having a drain may lead to increased complications and may negatively affect your results.

More Information about Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty):
Abdominoplasty or "tummy tuck" is a cosmetic surgery procedure used to make the abdomen thinner and more firm. The surgery involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen in order to tighten the muscle and fascia of the abdominal wall. This type of surgery is usually sought by patients with loose or sagging tissues, that develop after pregnancy or major weight loss.
Procedures
Abdominoplasty operations vary in scope and are frequently subdivided into categories. Depending on the extent of the surgery, a complete abdominoplasty can take from 1 to 5 hours. A partial abdominoplasty (mini-tuck abdominoplasty) can be completed between 1 and 2 hours.

Thank you for the explanation. Now I understand why. I'm still saving. YOU'RE DEFINITELY MY SURGEON!!!!!!!!!
That said in my previous comment, I do see your point and feel you are doing the best for your patients and I appreciate that .. thank you for these informative videos!! :)
I had a drainless tummy tuck with no major swelling for extended time and no seromas .. I am 6 months post op ... I'm glad I did not have to deal with the drains honestly .. 2 years ago I had a breast reduction, drainless and again had no problems
Who/where did you go to for your procedure?
Thank you dr for explain
Totally agree as a breast cancer survivor, I’ve had 7 or more surgeries and the pesky drains are annoying when you have to go back to work.
Thank you Dr.
🤔 Thankyou for that info. I need all I can get. 😊
Wow, thanks for your detailed videos, i feel like I'm surgeon 😊😊
I saw a similar video from Dr Youn, where he also puts only one drain for safety. And the drain stays for a shorter period. I much prefer a surgeon who will go for the lesser risk option no matter how "inconvenient". Thanks for this.
Agree. I used to place 2 drains during a tummy tuck and they remained for about 2 weeks. Now, using the "drainless" technique, I place 1 drain and it usually comes out after 1 week! But I still place the drain.
QUESTION:
I’ve had gastric bypass surgery, and a separate gallbladder removal surgery. Neither surgeries did I have to have a drain put in.
Wouldn’t suturing the fat to the abdominal wall after a tummy tuck cause scarring on the inside? What if someone wanted a revision? Wouldn’t that be almost impossible to do if it had been sewn down after the original surgery?
Hi Dr, just HD a drainless tummy tuck 12 days ago,but after watching this vedio of urs I am little worried, that if the fluid is still there then will I hv any problem , and what should I do.
Too bad you're in NY. I wish you were in S FL. NY doesn't have recovery houses or set up to help w/aftercare like Florida is😢
We have patients that travel to us from all over the world, even south Florida. You are correct that NY does not have “recovery houses” but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
