Good stuff and thanks. The strength of an RT is the “Sport” part of sport touring. It handles ten times better that any HD, Indian, Goldwing or K series. Unless you enjoy highway riding for endless hours, (super touring?). I don’t own an RT but wish I did. Soon enough for sure. Need to consider my other 9 motorcycles, (2 HD’s). Again, personally I think you missed it’s real strength. Handling. So I don’t agree with your conclusion but did enjoy the vlog. Respectfully of course.

@@BruceHoult The new 2020's are so very nice, I have an 09 r1200rt that runs wonderfully but it was not taken care of and serviced when it should have been, I've had it to 90mph once and now it has a slight amount off oil leaking from under the plastic and I hit something on the road and had to get a used front rim and the gas tank is leaking and will be repaired and I also have a used tank to install. Everything will get taken care of as i am used to taking bike a part as i've built some choppers in the 70's but I sure hate it when people think they can do the work and have no idea how to so make a mess of it.

Great Review. The GT is unnecessarily large if you ask me. You just don't need it. And the boxer engine provides the 'character' that it's nerdy looks may lack. Personally, I love the analog dash. While the TFT is very functional, there's a reason that even the finest of automobiles don't go that route. They just look like a cheap video game. All that said, I liked your review and the photography was amazing! Thank you for your honest opinion. PS - I have an RT and an Indian, and 9 times out of ten I reach for the RT....

One major and very important point missed in the final comparison was RT's much lighter weight. Good luck picking up the 1600GT, Ultra Glide, or Roadmaster when (not if) they accidentally tip over. At 600 pounds fully loaded , the RT is 200 pounds lighter than 1600GT and 300 pounds lighter than the HD and Indian models mentioned.

I have had 3 K16's the last being a 2017 GT Sport. I tour Europe each year and have put about 45,000 miles on K16's over the last eight years. The K16 is prone to overheating in a warm climate, last year my 2017 bike overheated 3 times, when I got back I decided enough was enough. The K16 was traded for a R1250RT, I am thoroughly enjoying the RT.

Matt, your off base on the RT and comparing it to a K1600 or an Indian / Harley. Ive seen people go from theire Harley and ride an RT and be stolen from the Harley Zealot crown unbelieving how good the RT is in their hands compared to the other boat anchors from USA. Then you have the Goldwing and K1600GT or GTL. The K1600 hits the scale at 100lbs more than the RT and its up higher in the frame to boot. The super long wheelbase of the big K bike makes the two so different that the balance at rest and at speed on the back roads the RT a clear winner in the eyes of veteran tourers. They know that performance isnot measured in size, its measured in abilities on the road. Not just in a strait line. Having ridden all three of the four and owned an RT for many rears, i cont come up with a reason to not select the RT, well there is the Goldwing. I actually owned one once. One that I had to build into a touring bike. Back in the 1970s Goldwings were just like other bikes “Naked”. So i added a windjammer, bates saddlebags and a luggage rack. THe bike never carborated properly, didnt like to start on cold days, was heavy and rode like a Buick. Suspension was terrible at the rear. Shaft was jacking up and down. I hated the bike for 6 months before I mad a great decision and that was to trade it in on a year old R90/6 boxer and that was it, what a better motorcycle and that sums it up forthe RT really. THe R1250 or R1200RTs just do allthings and that is what a Motorcycle is supposed to do. No bike does all things as well as the RTs do and that makes them special to their owners. Its not the name, brand or plain loyalty like those Zealots. Its the get down the road, carve that corner, haul the passenger, the camping gear, fuel mileage, power to accelerate out of those turns solo or two up, add fun to ride and you described the RT.

I had an 05 rt that I bought in 2010. One of the drive shaft u joints broke outside of Vegas last fall. It had 102k miles on it. I traded my broken bike in for a 2016 1200rt with 22k miles on it. I think they are wonderful bikes, but I would add two points. One is buy used. A 3 year old bike is 1/2 the price of a new one. Two is do your own scheduled maintenance. Buy a manual, get the tools, watch CZcams videos. Those cylinders poking out make most scheduled maintenance fairly easy. BTW, My old rt is for sale at the dealership in vegas for 4k.

      @TexMexStrada Před 4 lety +3

Ge OgreZA There are two issues to consider here as it comes to maintenance costs, and I am speaking from experience as a former K-bike owner (k1200lt):
#1 access to the valves on the boxer engine is unobstructed, meaning it takes a few minutes to get to the valves. On the K-bikes you need to remove a lot of cladding and other components to gain access to the cylinder heads ($$$ at an hourly mechanic billing rate of USD $120+).
      #2:The K1600 has 24 valves to adjust, the R1200/1250 has 8 ($$$).
As to insurance costs mentioned above, I actually just compared them. R1250RT: $130 per month, K1600GT: $360 per month. That’s USD. Same exact coverage.

I think you miss the point about the RT. I can’t believe someone with your experience can conclude that a K1600 and RT are in the same decision making process. They appeal to different riding segments and riders. Those who want monster sized touring bikes and those who don’t. Those who want decent fuel mileage in there riding and those who don’t care about getting mileage in the 30s. Then there are those who don’t mind 600+ pounds of bike to push around and those who want something lighter. As far as capacities they are both capable of the same luggage capacities. The K bike maybe a little more comfortable for the passenger in seating and room but the fairing on the RT is much better for both in coverage. Guys who buy 1600 don’t buy RTs and guys who want an RT don’t buy 1600s. Wake up over there.

I bought a s/h R1200RT at a saving of almost 30% off new with top box, Opt 719, no GPS, no driving lights. Had 7300K when I bought it in Sept, now has 24000Km on dash. Sorry but the 1600 is just too heavy when you travel Australia like I .do-alone. My last ride was K1100 LTSE that got to 290,000 before being sold. RT issues for me, gearbox clunky, apparently fixed, quick shifter can't be turned off, music player is a software bug waiting for a solution. Vibration? Gets less the more kms I do. Panniers don't pack as well as the K1100 despite being larger. Plus points, great weather protection, low wind noise, brakes are great but the rear to front linkage could have more rear, fuel economy better than 550km per tank on 98 octane, lighting is good for night riding as we have kangaroos to cope with. 1250 was little changed over 1200 and that says it to me.

I'm sure anyone who has factory panniers has done this before, I certainly did once or twice when I didn't notice and closed the lid of the pannier on a strap that was hanging out. Not as big of a deal as some people make it out to be here in the comments.

Always naysayers. TFT is awesome because it’s designed in color with appropriate quick & easy on the fly reading. Airplane, Formula One and MotoGp Cockpits have similar for quick visibility especially in bad weather or low illumination due to sun or other. Bookend the classic analogue gauges with a TFT in the middle. Technology has greatly improved since the old dash. Move forward people.

  • @barking.dog.productions1777

When he said 250 grand I was like WTF??? Not sure what that was... had to go to the website. Base model is around $18,600 here in 'Murica. That probably keeps it competitive with Harley, and the Goldwing. Still not cheap, but BMW never is. I like the boxer motor. It is naturally well balanced, and 2 big cylinders are probably better for touring and torque than more smaller pistons. Also easier to access the valves and plugs for maintenance. In line engines are better from a pure performance aspect... I consider them better for a sport bike. I love my R1100RT. I wasn't so impressed with my Goldwing. Too much faring and wind screen blocks all of the cool air and you just get the heat off the engine.

I hate TFT, it's just a fashion item and a security risk (thieves in the UK have discovered how easy they are to steal). For me it's a definite barrier to buying a newer RT. please give me clocks any day. No distracting rubbish on the display. Who wants all that unnecessary detail when actually moving?
The K1600GT is heavier, more expensive to buy and run on with increased service and maintenance costs and poorer fuel economy for no real performance benefit on real roads in real traffic.

I dislike the retro 1960’s look of the American ones mentioned. You think the console of the RT is “grandfather clock” but the whole package of an Indian is NOT? Wow! I wonder what school of modern design you could reference to base this. RT is stylistically superior (very subjective appeal I admit) to any other alternative. Your reason 3 to me is reason 1 for as you mentioned, without it there is no further need to assess it.

With the new bike though, the performance difference is a lot less! And then there's the maintenance. I just did the spark plugs and radiator clean a few months ago, and just had to do the front wheel bearing and ball joints. The maintenance is just killing me. Maybe it's time to drop some cylinders, lose a few HP and just ride more!
