  • We have a question here from pickup maker Dean Sayers.
He asks Doug how to detect if a guitar neck is twisted, and how to repair / rectify the twist if it is.
Also a nice compliment from CZcamsr 'Ossi Oswald' from Austria who owns a Wilkes Explorer guitar.

Great advice, thank you. This can be caused by too heavy a guage of strings on top, as many wrongly believe heavier strings are louder, have better tone, etc,..but Billy Gibbons uses 7's and Yngwie uses 9's and each will attest heavy guage string myths are just that.

Hard to believe 7's on longer scale guitars like strats and teles because even 9's brake so easy.

    Thanks doug.
    One more subscriber for you.
That explanation of the twisted neck makes a lot of sense. It's my peavey Wolfgang, but it does seem to have improved over time under string tension.
I can make the golden 50's now btw.
And yeah just let me know about the firebird pickups 👍🎸

I have used winding sticks like Doug says. But remove neck and place one on back of headstock, the other on back of heel. This will indicate the direction of twist.

If its the higher gauge strings that make it twist , would it help if you strung it left handed with just the higher gauge on and let it sit for awhile like that. ( assuming its a right hand guitar )

Where abouts are you based? Anywhere near Manchester (by the sounds of it)? I have a couple of guitars that need some work doing on them.

i bought a guitar that's been sitting at a warehouse for like 12 years with strings on, and now the action is really high, i lowered the trus rod as much as possible but it's still high how could i lower it to make it playable. the strings are literally almost 2 cm high from the fret board down on the high strings

    Very helpful video.
    So guys...I got a Schecter C1 SLS Elite .
After inspection by two experts it seems I have a twisted or warped neck issue. This causes my high E and B strings to buzz and give dead notes on frets 3, 4 & 5.
It's a neck through guitar. So is there anything I can do to remedy this or am I stuck with a lemon here??? Paid 1400 USD so it really stings to have to deal with this issue.
Your feedback would be highly HIGHLY appreciated 🙏🙏🙏

That is extremely unlikely that a Guitar with a multiple piece laminate neck and carbon fiber rods gets twisted, almost impossible, never heard of this happening. This could be a manufacturing defect on the fretboard. Schecter has the best customer service of all of them, that guitar has a 2 years warranty, if it in fast twisted, schecter will replace it.

@@BlankBlankerson-py3ms thank you for the feedback. It's been better recently after a truss rod adjustment but now the action is too high. I'm afraid to do anything in case it goes back to that awful dead note buzz.
Unfortunately I live in Bangladesh. We do not have the luxury of returning goods etc without spending just as much as the instrument itself. We mostly buy what we like and carry into our country hoping it'll be fine. 3rd world problems 😑

Best way to tell if it's twisted is that the guitar is actually unplayable even after fine tweaks 😂

      What if you don't play?
Take it to someone else who can't play to see if it's twisted?
Or just hang it on the wall' does the wall have to be twisted or do you need to call up the guy you took it to that can't play to help you twist the wall?

WOW ! ... im surprised Doug recommended steam...
steam is violent, unpredictable, COMPLICATED, and damaging to the finish and in the end would be purely guess work that may or may not actually work...6 months later i may return to its default position...twisted.
my suggestion... first take the strings off and loosen the truss rod...let it sit for a week.
restring and adjust the truss rod see what you have.
if the neck is still twisted minor surgery is required...remove the frets and use a sanding beam to remove the twist, reinstall new frets, flatten/dress the frets, restring, adjust truss rod...bobs your uncle.
or sell it to some unexpecting poor soul.

God for fucks sake man you nailed it. It ruins the video because you can't really follow what the old guy is on about, for one thing. Then there's the common courtesy bit...no manners at all. I commented the same thing, how absolutely obnoxious. Let the ol guy tell us what he knows. Probably has more guitar shop experience leavin in one piss than most of us got our whole lives, I wanna hear what's he's got to say.
