🚸 What I wish someone told me when I was in high school & college

  • Graduation season means lots of feelings, questions, and uncertainty. Here's what I wish someone told me and reminded me when I was going through it all: you're not defined by your GPA/SAT scores, you're not defined by what school you went to, you're not defined by your job. You're so 👏 much 👏 more 👏 than mere numbers and a few sentences on your resume. As for uncertainty, you'll never be fully certain with your path but keep fighting & dreaming despite that because you're realizing your destiny and blazing your own path with every decision and move you make. Got super inspired after watching Sky Castle lol lots more to come! 😀

"A part of confidence is accepting the unknown." Wise words. I shall keep it close to my heart.
I'm in my gap year after uni and it's terrifying, in a way, because my friends jumped into working life immediately and I am sitting here feeling like a failure. But I cleaned up my diet, work out, meditate, and figure out who I am and where I want to go and learn so much more little things like psychology, gardening, and even nutrition. I'm still scared and restless, but I'll believe more in my journey and the uncertainties.
Thank you so much for this, Rowena.

High school senior here! My last day of school is Monday. Just wanted to say: this spring I was rejected from four schools and waitlisted at Harvard, and it’s probably the best thing that has ever happened to me. I thought it was going to kill me, but getting the waitlist letter (which is pretty much rejection) was the hugest relief of my whole life. In the fall I’m going to a school that really values me and will help me grow. It’s made me think of the Steinbeck quote, “now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good.” Rowena, your videos really helped me through the chaos of the college admissions season. Thank you so much! I would also like to extend my love to anyone going through the process 💛💛

If you have the opportunity, consider community college as your first step! Save money, less pressure to get in, and gives you the time and space to explore and take a multitude of different classes. I got to take ballet and modern dance for the first time in my life at CC. A great choice to get credit, but also take classes for your own personal development. Good luck to you! :)

the school system of countries like Korea and the US really astound me.. in Belgium, nobody cares what school anyone goes to. We don't have any entrance exams, no stress. We can choose any course in any school we like, and if we don't like it we can just change our course. And it doesn't cost much at all so it's not a big deal. I used to think it was like this all over the world. People shouldn't feel so much stress over school. Parents or the school system shouldn't pressure those who want to learn.

I love how you brought up BTS and Namjoon because it’s just so true. They are such an influential group and have taught me how to love, whether it’s them giving us love or showing me reasons I should love myself. Now my question is, how do I reciprocate that love back to the world? Can I ever hope to be as impactful as them, to help others as much as they have helped me? I dwell on this so much and try to figure out the “right” way to go about life, but this video helped me realize that questions like this are not always helpful. thank you 💜

I read this post the other day that said if you obsess over whether you are making the right decision, you are basically assuming that the universe will reward you for one thing and punish you for another. There is no wrong, only a series of possibilities. Going against the external pressures can be scary but we are created without limitation so live your best life and take a chance on yourself✨

SO MUCH PRESSURE. I didn’t even really had a chance to deeply think about what I really wanted to do after graduating high school, because I thought all that mattered was to get in one of the top universities.

I'm currently in the process of reconstructing my life and seeing my human experiences from a different perspective; meaning providing myself with more acceptance, self love, and nourishment. I am incredibly driven these days to obtain knowledge by bettering my writing and math skills, bettering my old hobbies, developing NEW ones, consuming philosophical pieces of literature ( i even decided to throw myself out my comfort zone and declare a philosophy minor), and immerse myself in the idea of being comfortable with being uncomfortable. I have been going to bed earlier, waking up earlier, meditating consecutively ( I have decided to join a 365 meditation challenge with those in my local community and all around the world), diminish phone usage, and listen to podcasts.
I wanted to cut this short and share a TedTalk podcast called 'Nudge.'' It's fairly old (from 2016) but I have decided to listen to all available episodes and this episode was the perfect one to listen to this morning. It kind of expands on the similar ideas within this youtube video and I found it incredibly insightful and encouraging. I would definitely recommend it to all who are in need of some clarity and new perspective. I am sending love to everyone always.

I’m late for this video but imma be coming back to this often, especially with how low my mental state is in regards to life , questioning what to do now and who I am after coming from a mindset where grades defined me
The few things that help calm me down along with the many beautiful things you’ve said are:
    1. God/Universe/whatever higher power you may believe in gave you a life, challenges, and hardships that you can handle
    2. My soul asked to come down and take on a physical form so I wanna grant my soul’s wish in living it as fully as I can
Big and philosophical I know haha but if it helps anyone else besides myself then I’m happy.
Life is hard. I don’t wanna say to “get through it” since to me it kinda implies it as something to drag ourselves through and not enjoy everything.
So I’ll say that life is hard, but let’s experience it~
(kudos to you if you read this long post, I love you 💕)

Before starting a university/collage programme research what job opportunities they truly give, what your ”title” would be if any and what weight it has. Or how know it would be.
I made the misstake twice with two educations.
The second time it had plenty of useful courses but the title was vauge for possible employeers.
The first time I threw myself from I guess would be high school in american terms into a university programme far from home and was more stubborn about not giving up than making sure it was actually worth my time.
It Ofc still gave me knowledge I’m thankful for as Well as friends and a love I’d never have met otherwise.
But, I also built up a debt as a student.

Thanks for tackling about the issue I was most confused about..... I think I can get a clear mind now.... I tooo watched sky castle... At first I watched it because RM suggested it but as I watched it more and more... It felt like it it was kind of my story... The overwhelming emotions I felt during the drama and the number of times I cried... It really made me realize certain things about the society about my self... Now that I know I just want to be a better myself and live a happy life and I know for that I'll have to work hard and of course u WILL.... Thanks for the inspiration... It meant alot

1:23 labels/ Status/ numbers / stats should not define you ,you are so much more than all that
1:50 If you don't define what is important to you, and what success means to you, you allow other people and the outside world to define what success should mean to YOU
10:11 it's easy to look outward for answers, validation or what defines success. But if we're able to look inward and ask yourself the tough questions (what is success to me? Why am i doing this?) , you'd be able to know yourself better, and you'd find the encouragement and motivation to do the things you wanna do and you'd be able to do these things better.
3:31 gap year. Spending time to get to know yourself would be much more useful to you in the long run than getting good grades
    4:53 dealing with parents
Remember, they are humans too, and they have their own flaws and weaknesses and it's easy for humans to project their own insecurities and unhappiness onto others, especially their children, who they feel like they can control as they are a part of them
You could try to communicate with them, but you need to remember that *your life is your responsibility* 5:39 your parents aren't responsible for your life, they're responsible for their lives. Because, if you spend you whole life doing what they want you to do, and you live your life for them, what are you gonna do when they're not around...?
6:35 uncertainties will always be there.
    There is no "right path".
Even the most successful people have moments of uncertainty
The mountains you'd have to climb are endless. Once you overcome one, there would be another one waiting for ya.
9:01 the sooner you're able to process and internalize the fact that your whole life is unpredictable and uncertain and there will be multiple mountains coming up all the time and you just gotta roll with the punches, the better it will be and life will be better and easier. There's no rush to define what you're doing, what your path is. *Just walk your path, and the path will reveal itself*
10:58 *confidence comes from accepting the unknown, and yourself. Life's gonna happen, and the best you can do is just the best you can, with what you have, where you are. We just gotta accept ourselves for who we are, and embrace ourselves, and believe that things will work out*
12:00 you are awesome! You are not some numbers and stats. And *no matter what the outside world is telling you, no matter what anyone is telling you, before answering to the outside world, before you let the external pressure and judgement consume you, turn inward and ask yourself, WHY?*

Geeeeee wow how befitting.... You know I've been struggling with this myself. I tend to belittle myself based on societal accolades -deemed as norms- not yet accrued. I sometimes feel like I'm just not enough. Its a struggle really but I'm working on it. I'd like to get to a "I don't give a fnck" point.

Although annoying, the pressure to go to college is simply a part of the American life. It sucks, of course, but that’s just how it is. Not everyone can afford a gap year. Getting a minimum wage job and supporting yourself with that, especially if you’re a person that doesn’t get help from your parents, is not plausible for all. For some, yes, but for all, absolutely not. For some, the pressure of going to college and succeeding in life is not parental pressure, it’s pressure to escape a life of poverty/helplessness that has been experienced during an entire childhood. Gap years, pressure, all of that, for the poorer side of high school graduates, is absolutely necessary in being able to support yourself in the future. Some do not have a cushion of their own or their parent(s) money to help them “experience life and know how the world works.” Some people are absolutely forced to take the fast track, go into debt their entire lives just to get an education, and just deal with the pressure of getting into a good school. While I appreciate the positivity and encouragement, for a lot of people, these things would not be plausible

One of the reasons why students don’t take gap years in the US is because they risk losing scholarships and financial aid. I think a gap year is smart though because it would students an opportunity to really explore their options properly and if they decide not to go to college, then they can decline the scholarship so another student can have the opportunity.
