Hey Dan! One of the strangest but most useful beard tools that I have is a vintage angelfood cake cutter. It’s like a very wide pick comb with long smooth metal tines. Great for fluffing and rearranging a beard without combing out all of the structure. Pretty awesome! Google it. Thanks for the great channel and great attitude!

I like a bit of volume in my beard, I like the way air flows through the hair, the matted down looks feels greasy (like my teenaged son's hair, who knows when he showered last?). I do love to run a pick comb through the bottom of my beard to get the hairs under my chin&neck to straighten them out. ( I look down a lot: mowing & staining at my phone; and my supporting beard hairs tend to run forward vs. Down) the pick helps to pull them back into position, so I have a good looking "shelf" on the bottom of my beard.

Like this one Dan. Because one you mentioned a couple of tools I use the buffalo horn comb and Kent combs. Then you bring up the pick comb. I copped a pick comb when I kept my beard at 8 month length. So the pick wasn’t really kicking it then. But now I’m going for a 2 year beard and at the 7” length. So I’m glad you brought the pick comb up. I like the fuller look. Because I have a colic on the right side and fuller helps with that. Plus I’ve learned a long time ago. To not oppress your hairs head or face. Let them move in there natural direction especially beard hair. It’s better to think Impressionism instead of airbrushed. So thanks Dan for this one!

I've had a metal pick comb (Afro Pick) sitting in the package on my dresser for over six months now. Bought it at the local beauty supply store but really didn't understand how to go about using it, so there it sat. For more volume, I have been blow drying underneath and up, using a Kent combing up also. Then blowing dry the outside and combing down to finish. I think the pick may help as a finishing touch to help separate the hair from the comb down process. Thanks for the video.

I have had a pic comb for a while. I use mine every other day especially when I'm using a leave in conditioner. Even though its got fine teeth it still allows my beard to breath. Here is my key for how I use my tools.
Boars Brush: Short to medium length to help direct my beard in the direction I want it to grow.
Fine Comb: Any length. For styling, after adding oil to move it around, exfoliating. After adding butter before bed.
Wide Comb: Medium to Long. Stylimg and after adding oil to move it around. After adding butter before bed.
1/2 Inch round Brush: Short-Medium adding volume to the exterior portion of my beard for styling.
1' Round Bristle Brush: Medium-Long, Bringing my neckline out and down.

Come October I planned on cutting all the whispyness away, which right now I just barely hit 6in 😁 And when I cut down I'll prolly be back to half that almost.
I'd have to say for the time being I like to keep things tight and right, although with no heat and or no balm, my beard likes to puff out a bit, especially right after the shower. But I'll have to add a pick to my collection of tools, just in case 😉

Hiya Teach. I usually have no problems with my beard looking bigger. Depending on the heat and humidity I adjust my product choice and usage. Even after using a hair dryer and combing (Beard Octane Large ox horn) straight down it can still gets bigger throughout the day. "Heat and tension equals direction" I have been taught. You have already done learned us on temperature, humidity and other influences that might have an impact on style or texture, and sooo much more. I do a strip wash once a week with pine tar, condition and as a reset after a semi blow dry I use the Aberlite beard iron. Then I will use the appropriate product. Half way through the day my beard still gets bigger. I've learned so much over the past couple years watching this channel. This video kind of re enforces some of your basic principles of even how to tame your beard. My beard be looking good because of you and that other dude, mostly you though. Other guy slackin. I was even told to change my icon from my red motorcycle to a picture of ma beard. Or maybe I did it just to troll lol. Anyway I just ordered those combs. Why not? Thanks for the vid Teach. 🍎

I know this may come as a shock, but I've got a mostly white beard...
The texture of my beard is very different than some of the other grey bearded folks that are prominent in the Facebook group.
My hair is finer, and mostly straight. I don't have curly coarse texture gray, I have about a 2 inch C curl in my mostly straight hair.
I've been using a comb that is normally used for doing a flat top hair cut. It has long thin tines similar to the pick you are using, but is about 6 inches long with a handle.
I start by blowing up like you show in the other blowout video, using a very wide tooth shower comb. Once it's mostly dry and all the tangles are out, I move to the narrower spaced teeth of the Flat top comb. I have mostly stopped using the round brush for straitening, because of the use of a mask I don't want to spend too much time or heat straightening just to curl it up under a mask.
I do however still use the boars hair brush (actually a recent change) for the final once over after applying the tiniest amount of styling balm or Pomade, just to get all the fly-aways, my hair is a beast some times due to the texture. I never felt like the boars hair brush did much for my texture hair, but is seems, with a light touch, to help wrangle up the flyers...

You read my mind Dan. I've been thinking about this exact topic lately. My routine is towel dry (mostly)/oil and comb through (wait 5 min)/heated straightener with round brush then balm and boar's hair brush. I like the uniform groomed look but since mine is a long goatee I don't have that growth from the cheeks to add the volume I'd like to see. And I use the heated straightener only because I just can't get rid of that dip below the chin and for some reason not all of my beard is growing at the same rate, so it can look all over the place.

I like volume , best combs I've used are the (metal flea combs from wal-mart) go ahead laugh it up, but they work good for removing dead skin cells and work great if you have dry skin under your beard, and the have yet to pull 1 hair out of my beard because the teeth are flexible

But the shampoo strips the beard alot so Co wash is a must.
Now that my beard is about 7-8 in. I'm concentrating on the side burn length which seems to help the width.
And I'm in the process of making a pick with side handle for beards men.

With that said I'm really loving the thicker look after picking everything out and I can't wait for it to grow even longer like yours because your beard seriously looks amazing picked out like that and it gives me even more motivation to keep going!

Mines about the same length and if there’s a good breeze my beard separates completely and it’s a real pain to get back to normal. Most definitely going to try this. I'm a big fan of the bigger beard with a lot of volume. The narrow, super straight and tight style does not work for me at all. That's why I started growing out the neck and upper sideburns right from the start this time around, because I want the big, wide, thick look to the beard. Question: I'm sitting right at about 6 1/2" growth after 8 months, do you think that would work for this length, or should I hold off until it's a little big longer?

Off topic question: I´ve heard som talks and read some reads lately about a "Growth serum", which obviously is just a fancy word for a carrier and essential oil mixture that is supposed to promote the beard growth significantly, that it even in some cases works better than minoxidil (Which i would never put on my face/beard). The mixture in particular is Castor Oil and about 3% peppermint oil and you´re supposed to massage it into your weaker growth areas every single night before bed. And that somehow would over time...or atleast could...enhance beardgrowth in areas where you dont grow anything or have weak growth (As in creating more follicles for hair to grow out from). I´ve done some research on both castor and peppermint oil and it seems like most ppl are in agreement that it works. What are your thoughts on this? Any word of caution? Could this mixture be a good alternative to minoxidil for growth? I mean, it couldnt hurt to try right?

Just the other day I realized that all of my hair is curling under gathering together and creating a little curl like an upside-down troll. I took my wooden beard comb, wide tooth side and combed neck, chin, and down to give it some volume, but through the day it just returned to the troll curl. I just want to show off what growth I do have now. I'm guessing it's ultimately a wait for weight thing, but wondering if I should use a balm or something to fight the curl... I may also habitually stroke the hair causing the curl so I dunno, it could be me
